BLACKBURN Rovers legend Alan Shearer has netted a double honour from the fans who used to worship him in a poll conducted as part of the Football League’s 125th Anniversary celebrations.

Shearer was voted by Rovers supporters as the club’s greatest player and the all-time fans’ favourites after an unforgettable four years at Ewood Park in which he scored 130 goals in 171 appearances and won the Premier League title.

The prolific striker polled 45 per cent of the votes to win the all-time fans’ favourite award, ahead of Tugay Kerimoglu with 27 per cent, and the same players made up the top two in the greatest player list, with Shearer taking 48 per cent of the votes and the Turkish playmaker following up again on 27 per cent.

Rovers’ Premier League-winning campaign in 1994-95 was voted as the club’s best season with a massive 90 per cent of the vote.

The manager and captain of that famous team – Kenny Dalglish and Tim Sherwood respectively – also topped the best boss and best skipper lists.

Dalglish picked up 71 per cent of the managerial votes, ahead of Bob Crompton and Graeme Souness, while Sherwood took home 35 per cent of the captaincy tally to edge out Colin Hendry and Ryan Nelsen, who were tied for second.

Rovers’ best game in the eyes of their supporters came in 2001 when they thrashed East Lancashire rivals Burnley 5-0 at Ewood Park.

That took 49 per cent of the vote with its closest challenger being the 4-3 home win over Manchester United in 2006, inspired by hat-trick hero David Bentley, on 32 per cent.

The polls were run by The Football League to celebrate each of the current 72 clubs’ own contributions to the last 125 years of league football.

The results were announced on the anniversary of the Football League’s formation in April 1888 to bring down the curtain on a year of activity celebrating the start of the world’s original league football competition.

Nearly 100,000 votes were cast in the polls after clubs were first invited to compile their own shortlist for each category based on fans’ nominations via social media.
