RUDY Gestede scored a first-half hat-trick of headers as Rovers returned to winning ways to move within two points of the play-offs with two games of the campaign remaining.

Recalled right-back Todd Kane was also on target in an utterly one-sided first half in which Gary Bowyer’s side raced into a four-goal lead.

Birmingham, who have now failed to win any of their last 16 matches at home, pulled two goals back after the break through substitutes Nikola Zigic and Demarai Gray.

But Rovers withstood Blues’ attempt to stage an unlikely fightback to record a first victory at St Andrew’s since 2003.

MORE TOP STORIES:

It was a victory which also extended their unbeaten league run to 10 games, the current longest in the Championship and the club’s longest since February 2001.

It may have come at a cost, however, as Jason Lowe picked up an ankle injury in the second half. The midfielder battled on – out of position up front – as Rovers had used all three of their substitutes.

It means Bowyer has injury concerns over nine first-team players going into Saturday’s trip to Charlton Athletic as Tommy Spurr (groin), Michael Keane (knee), Lee Williamson (neck), Tom Cairney (groin) and David Dunn (calf) all missed out with knocks picked up in Good Friday’s 0-0 home draw with Yeovil Town.

Rovers boss Bowyer, who was unhappy with the defending for Birmingham’s second-half goals, said: “I thought we did ever so well in the first half.

“We looked full of energy and the big man was a real handful. Everybody contributed massively.”

Bowyer was already without Ben Marshall (ankle), Dickson Etuhu (hamstring) and Adam Henley (ankle).

For a full report and reaction see tomorrow’s Lancashire Telegraph.

Birmingham: Randolph, Packwood, Thorpe, Blackett (Hancox 46), Reilly, Burke, Caddis, Huws, Howard (Zigic 29) Macheda, Lovenkrands (Gray 68). Subs not used: Doyle, Martin, Lee, Shinnie. Booked: Macheda, Reilly, Zigic. Goals: Zigic 63, Gray 84.

Rovers: Robinson, Kane, Hanley, Kilgallon, Olsson, King (Feeney 75), Evans, Lowe, Conway (Taylor 83), Rhodes, Gestede (Varney 59). Subs not used: Eastwood, Dabo, Lenihan, Rittenberg. Booked: Hanley. Goals: Gestede 10, 20, 45, Kane 24.

Devastating first half performance and for me, Josh King terrified them. No coincidence all of our goals emanated from the right. No surprise nerves were jangling when six minutes extra time was called as ten man Blues were stretching us. Seems to me we can play the long ball and play with flair on the ground in equal measure. Let us have considered criticism about Bowyers substitions. I would think he had eyes on the last two games of the season.

As far as Rovers if this result was down to the magic of GB then why hasnt he been doing it consistently all season like Dyche has for Burnley - no towards the end of the game as usual when in front 'squeaky bum time' and 'too little too late' and as for me a bit of 'humble pie' but so what I've got broad shoulders and it doent change my views of GB and the regime at Ewood - this club is going no where under them!!

Have you considered Bowyer took Gestede and Conway off as a precaution?

I fear it'll either come down to dropped points against Wednesday and Yeovil or goal difference (in which case the awful second-half today won't help). In any case, enjoyable game today, let's just hope we can beat the Addicks on Saturday.

Good win at Birmingham, keeps your play off hopes alive, and this is where the Clarets come in.

We could do Rovers two favours by beating our last two teams who are Ipswich (Home) and Reading (Away). If we do that, and you guys win your last two games, you just may be in a play off position?

Brighton have Yeovil and Notts Forest, so there is a possible chance they may slip up, and you're only two points behind them. You have Charlton and Wigan, and they are not unbeatable, certainly not with your squad.

You can do it, but you have to win your games!

Fair do's, well done Burnley, whatever happens next year they deserve their bit of glory this year.

Glad the Charlton game is away, GB still hasn't sussed how to break teams down at home. We never win 3 games together so probably we will just miss out on the play off places.

Can't help feeling that we've missed a golden opportunity, recent performances against other teams in the play off places would give some cause for optimism if we reach the play offs. We have looked much the better team against Watford, Brighton, Ipswich and QPR.

Cracking first half today and Josh King was excellent. A welcome three points and GB finally set the team up to play to its strengths at the start and 4-0 at half time was game over, so why the hell didn't we set up like this against Yeovil at Ewood. Very happy with the performance and most certainly the result and yet again, other than Forest, the other results were favourable. We have two games left, six points to play for, we cannot be relegated so, come on GB, let's go for it. Set up and play like we did today in the first half and let's seeif fate gives us a play off place. By rights we should be well out of the running but all the team's around us have continually dropped points so who knows? At the end of the day the history books will remember the three teams who went up, not who had the longest unbeaten run so ditch the negativity and go for it.

WE WON, WITHOUT WILLIAMSON!!! See what can be done when you drop the dead wood, also its a shame that Kane has only just been put back into the team as he has a **** good set of potential within him. Unless this is some coy GB trick to lower his value and then buy him off Chelsea in the summer? Watch this space.

Agree with the majority that the play offs have slipped from our grasp despite a good win and performance today, can only think retrospectively to the Yeovil game and sheff weds equaliser. We are relying on reading losing tomorrow night and a host of other teams losing their final 2 games. Either way I really do believe that another season in this league will be good for us to build, many congrats to the clarets today but there's an overwhelming feeling of 'too soon' and an eventual dismantling of that team and manager next year, If they spend wisely while not upsetting the apple cart they'll have a fighting chance, I'll be watching MOTD enviously next season.

After the Yeovil game the headlines said that GB would shuffle the pack and make changes.

However, I heard him on the radio after today's game saying that all the changes were enforced and due to injuries to Spurr, Keane, Cairney, Williamson plus Dunn (who came on as sub against Yeovil).
That is 5 injured players !!

Come on, grow some balls man - if you drop a player tell the truth - don't hide behind false injuries.
It is not the first time Bowyer has done this.

Why first of all congrats to Burnley? Do you think they'd congratulate us? They wouldn't p*55 on you if you were on fire David you bumbling bag of misery.

You still haven't enlightened us as to who you'd replace Bowyer with and how you plan to force Venkys into selling up, despite me first asking you at the start of the season.

Rumors are rife that Moyes is about to get the bullet at Utd, so maybe we could get him?

Finally Captain Happy, we won today and after a monumental improvement on last seasons absolute shambles, not to mention Bowyer having a full season under his belt, who's to say we can't improve again next season?

Just a thought.......

Well done Burnley you deserve to be promoted. As for Blackburn, my team, who I have supported since 1944, I think they have messed up and will have to try again next season, prior to which, they will have to go back to the drawing board and rethink things. Their inconsistency is a real problem. They will have to find from somewhere a link player to link defence with attack plus the defence needs toughening up somewhat. I am afraid next season is really going to be a big challenge. I do wonder whether GB is up to it - It is a bit similar to the Don Mckay situation - he got Rovers so near, but it took Kenny Dalgleish to actually do it.

Now then. I know this must be difficult for you morons to accept but here, once and for all, is final and definitive proof that Burnley FC are bigger and better than Blackburn Rovers.

Burnley are going up to the Premier League, Burnley are now £120 million richer than your shambolic, debt-ridden, laughingstock of a club, Burnley have the infrastructure to grow the club both on and off the field, and Burnley have in Sean Dyche a manager with the ability to mould us into a club that competes at the top level.

As for yourselves, let's consider all this play-off talk. You lot are simply not good enough. You've never climbed any higher than 8th place in the Championship all season. You're currently in 10th place. Brighton, Forest, Ipswich and Reading are far, far better teams than Blackburn Rovers. Bowyer is clueless as seen in the pathetic home draw against League One Yeovil and the other recent capitulations, and today against a very poor Birmingham side who could well be joining Yeovil in League One next season.

So onto next season and this bizarre notion that Bowyer will somehow transform you clowns into promotion candidates..

Next season the Championship is likely to be the most competitive and money driven it's ever been; with the likes of Sunderland, Fulham, and one of Cardiff, Norwich, West Brom or Aston Villa coming down with Premier League squads and receiving £60million in parachute payments with the intention of bouncing straight back up. As if that's not bad enough, there are some very good teams that will miss out this season, which may include Derby, QPR, Wigan, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Brighton, Watford, etc. All with solid financial backing. Then there is the little matter of your transfer embargo for FFP non-compliance and the need to reduce your astronomical wage bill in a futile bid to manage a £60million debt.

In summary you have not even a sniff of a chance of competing next season and your focus should be solely on avoiding the drop into League One when your shambles of a football club is further weakened through the sale of your better players, the inability to replace them, and the humiliation of being a whole division below your most hated rivals.

Try not to feel too down about it, you must have known it would happen at some point.

Have all got something in common.

Unlike B******** Rovers with their 3/4 of an average "Chumpionship" ground.

The way you no-dads go on about our ground you'd think you were playing at the Emirates week in week out!

So wind your blue and white necks in and look forward to establishing yourselves (if you're lucky!) as a "Fizzy pop league" (as you liked to call it when you thought your position in the top flight was guaranteed) side
and look forward to visiting Brenford and Rotherham!!!!!!

There are many contradicting points that you have made in this post, but I will point out the most obvious one you have struggled to get your head round... You talk about Rovers facing FFP penalties and then you have gone on to say about QPR's financial backing. One of the most obvious failings in your post is that QPR have spent the most this year and you think that if they fail to go up they will not suffer from FFP, yet they will spend even more money...? I would love to know how you think they will balance their books? Please enlighten me?

There are no contradicting points.

QPR have indeed made horrific losses much like Blackburn Rovers, however the difference is QPR have a team that will likely achieve promotion via the play-off's and therefore any fine payable for non-compliance will be handled as a result of the increased income in the Premier League. However should QPR fail to go up, which I don't think will happen, they currently possess one of the strongest squads outside of the premier league with a large number of top class players currently loaned out (Loïc Rémy, Stéphane Mbia, Adel Taarabt, Esteban Granero, Ji-Sung Park and Júlio César to name but a few) who will return to either play next season or be sold for vast sums allowing them to work towards balancing the books. They have also the benefit of a further parachute payment of £16million to offset against future losses.

That was supposed to be the idea with you lot but it hasn't really worked out has it, you have very few players of value and given the transfer embargo you'll be unable to buy players from next January up until the point at which you have reduced your loses considerable and restructured your club and its wage bill accordingly. You have also the further problem of how to cover the additional £8million reduction in your parachute payments. Expect yet another fire sale at the end of the season.

Rhodes will of course be looking for a move to a Premier League club and in all honestly, with Sam Vokes still recuperating, Burnley could well be the logical choice. Think about it.

First of all heartfelt congratulations to Burnley, the table never lies and they deserve to go up. I am going onto their thread after this to eat humble pie.

Secondly on another thread this morning II was totally wrong, I had this down as a banker home but was ever so slightly wrong, I wasn't very popular on the Corrie tour, kept getting my phone out to check the score, got ticked off once or twice, who cares.

BTW that's worth every penny if you get a chance to go before the set is finally demolished, might be only a soap but it's bloody real when you are there and brings back an awful lot of memories.

I kept in touch with the game by Twitter, from a couple of fans who were at the game and @Rovers, couldn't believe it when we went 4 up but it wouldn't be Rovers if we didn't have a crisis during a game would it? lol.

By all accounts it looks like the much maligned Jason Lowe stayed on the pitch longer than he should have doesn't it, playing on, injured, probably ended his season because of it.

Might not be the greatest player to ever wear a Rovers shirt, but he wears it with pride, heart and courage.

And at the end of the day that's what we need.

Said all season I thought we would finish 7th, don't think I will be that far off, probably left ourselves too much to do with the last two draws but in this weird league you never know.

BURNLEY FC ARE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

That's good news then, seems we don't have to worry about QPR either way.
In fact, from what you're saying,it seems you should be more worried about them than us.It looks like they're better equipped for the Prem than you are.

Clarets. Your team and manager deserve to be congratulated. You have achieved promotion on a relative shoestring.
However, your comments on this Rovers site need some tempering. Remember just 5 years ago ? Another bright young manager had got you promoted. Owen Coyle. Within 7 months he had left your club and relegation followed.
Your present manager is far better than Coyle was. I wish we had him. However, there are a lot of big clubs looking for a manager. If any one of the big boys come after your manager he may be gone. They can offer him double what he is getting at Turf Moor and provide a much larger stadium, fan base and facilities.
Just like the players, Managers are ambitious and want to be at the biggest clubs. I hope Dyche doesn't leave you, but I would not be surprised if he did. I'm sure he will eventually. There are very few long term Managers in football, especially at the smaller clubs.

Really why the all congratulations to Burnley on this thread. If you want to say anything go on their page.
A decent win for Rovers and everyone goes on about Burnley FFS
Most Rovers fans wanted mid table security this season after the last 3 years of torture so being only 2 points off the play offs with 2 games to go we've actually over achieved this season !
I hope we can snatch the 6th spot as if we do I believe we'd win the play off's -as the key to these is going into them in form and 10 games unbeaten
should not be overlooked even if their more draws than wins. Not getting beat becomes a habit.

I congratulated Burnley because it's the right thing to do, also went on their site and did the same, and had a go at the idiot troll on there as well for good measure.

That's done and dusted now, all that matters now is the game against Charlton on Saturday.

Rhodes to the dingles? Anyone to the dingles with your board?? Let's face it, history will repeat itself, no investment in the playing staff, Dyche gets P*seed right off and does an Owen Coyle or Eddie Howe and leaves for a bigger club where the board have some ambition rather than rubbing their greasy six fingered mitts thinking about those parachute payments. For all Venkys faults they have never failed to splash the cash, often unwisely, but what happened to theAustin millions???????
And I bet you're not jealous are you?

Grow up you clown. We're promoted, we've done playing the best football in the Championship and we've beaten you goons along the way.

This promotion has secured the financial future of Burnley FC and will allow us the strengthen the club both on and off the pitch allowing us to compete at a level above your debt ridden laughingstock of a club.

We are quite simple the best run club in the country with a board of directors who are all Burnley supporters. We have always sold to survive, that's the way in the Championship, as you're beginning to find out, and we have been exceptional at it.

We have broke even this season while you lot have continued to add to your astronomical debt which now stands at over £60million! Had we not achieved promotion this season then of course we would have had to cash in on a couple of players to cover the parachute payment deficit, again much like you lot will have to this summer. But now that we are in the promoted we are able to keep hold of our best players and Sean Dyche will have the money to bring in the talent he needs to make us competitive in the big league, but as you've seen this season he's taken a club that's forth favourites for relegation from the Championship and turned them into the best team in the division and title challengers, so don't bet against him surprising a few people next season!

And yes, Rhodes may well be viewed as a potential signing because lets be honest, why would he want to hand around at a no-mark club such as Blackburn Rovers?

If Carlsberg did seasons.....

BURNLEY FC ARE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE![/p]
Please enlighten me?[/p]
There are no contradicting points. Will B******* Rovers be having an open top tour of the dump of a town to celebrate not being in their annual relegation dog-fight!!!!??

Hope you get in the play offs only to be spanked daft by Wigan.

It'd be ironic that the team that finally threw you out of the Prem (with help from the chicken in a B******* shirt!) finally put you in your rightful place.

B******** ROVERS - PREDICTING THEIR SUPERIOR RIVALS DEMISE ALL SEASON ONLY TO BE PROVED WRONG AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN

BURNLEY FC - TAKING A SHARP NEEDLE TO THE LAST BIT OF THE NO-DADS DELUSION BUBBLE AND WATCHING IT GO POP

WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE

WE ARE EAST LANCS TOP TOP TOP DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!
"spanked daft", that's something that you will have to get used to next season, week in, week out. I wonder if you will now use your promotion money to renovate that horrible cow shed of a ground (proper away stand, new seats etc)
Crystal Palace

Everton

West Brom

Aston Villa

Fulham

Burnley

Have all got something in common.

They've all got traditional football grounds AND they'll all be in the Premier League.

Just out of interest do you know when the fixtures come out!!!!!!!?????

BURNLEY FC - PROPER CLUB. PROPER FANS. PROPER GROUND IN A PROPER LEAGUE AND THERE AINT A THING THAT YOU NO-DADS CAN DO ABOUT IT
How old are you slugtotran? Have you actually read back what you've posted? It looks like something an 8 year old would argue about in the playground. What's your next genius post gonna be, my dads bigger than your dad? And you think you've got "proper" fans? Take a good look at yourself pal, you're an absolute first class cnut.

By the way, I see there was almost 20,000 cavemen at your 3rd world allotment yesterday, despite Bonleh having not one single glory hunter....

Williamson is awful and Jason Lowe is a better right back than a central midfielder.
