DAVID Bowie’s “Heroes” provides the soundtrack to the video montage that is beamed out from the big screen before every home game this season.

It shows legends like Jimmy McIlroy, standing on the centre spot of his beloved Turf Moor; David Eyres, doing keepy-uppies in a Burnley backstreet, Jimmy Robson in front of the trophy cabinet; Ian Britton, leaning on a goalpost; Andy Payton with his golden boot; footage of homegrown hotshot Jay Rodriguez, Wembley winner Wade Elliott, Martin Dobson in his pomp, Jimmy Adamson, Harry Potts.

Modern-day marvels are among them, and include the goals from recent derbies – with Sam Vokes, Jason Shackell and Junior Stanislas celebrating while Bowie sings: “We can beat them, just for one day; We can be heroes, just for one day.”

Although Burnley are away this weekend, those lyrics could be particularly poignant on Sunday – the latest derby day.

It could also mean a re-mastering of the footage by the time they host Leeds next Saturday, to include the current Clarets crop should they succeed where others have failed and beat their arch rivals for the first time in 35 years.

Vokes certainly hopes so.

“Everyone wants to win. It would be massive to pick three more points up, especially tomorrow. There are people around the place speaking about the derby, there’s an extra buzz this week building up to the game. You can feel it. And also in the changing room, the lads are looking forward to it,” said the 24-year-old, who goes into the Football League’s joint oldest derby boosted by a player of the month prize and international goal.

“It’s a great honour. There’s some tough competition with some big players in this league so it’s a good honour for myself.

“But it’s a lot to do with the team. A lot of my goals, especially this month, have come from a great team effort and I think to take that award is great on a personal level but it shows how far we’ve come as a team.”

Success tomorrow would top a memorable week off nicely for the Wales striker.

“It would be very nice,” he smiled.

“It’s been a good week so far, it would be nice to add to that.

“It was good to get a good run-out on Wednesday night and to get another goal was great. I can take a lot of positives from that.”

As a collective Vokes feels the Clarets can use the feelgood factor generated from back-to-back wins over top six rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby County in their last two home games to boost their chances of turning three previous derby draws into a long-awaited win.

“We’re in some good form at the moment and taking some confidence from those results at home – teams also pushing for automatic promotion – so we’ve got to take confidence from that into this game.

“The big game occasion is something we’ve had to deal with a few times this season already.

“It won’t be any different tomorrow.

“We’ve played in some of these derbies already and we’ll take some good confidence from that.”

But while the league table would suggest the balance of power has shifted in East Lancashire, with the second-placed Clarets boasting a 20-point advantage over 10th placed Rovers, Vokes insists they won’t run the risk of underestimating their rivals.

“They’re a strong outfit still. They’re a good side and we’re going to their ground, which is a hard place to go to,” he said.

“But from our point of view we’re on a good run at the moment and we can only take confidence from those results.”
