Blackburn Rovers appoint Alan Myers as director of communications

BLACKBURN Rovers have appointed Alan Myers as the club’s new director of communications.

Myers announced yesterday that he was leaving his post as communications director at boyhood club Everton.

Rovers managing director Derek Shaw said: “Once we were made aware that Alan had left Everton, we moved quickly to secure the services of a very talented and experienced football man.

“We have seen how he engaged with the Everton fans and the significant success he had over a short period of time, and that is what attracted us to him.

“After discussions with the owners, it was unanimously agreed for Alan to join Blackburn Rovers as early as Monday and his appointment will further strengthen our existing media team.”

Myers said: “I am extremely excited to join Blackburn Rovers and be at a club with such rich traditions and history.

“I have observed from a distance, through my work at Sky, developments at Blackburn Rovers over the past few years and have been really impressed in recent months at the stability and progress being made both on and off the field.

“One of my first tasks will be to engage with the Rovers fans. I think it's fair to say they've had a difficult time over the last few years, but that is changing now and I want to be part of that.

“Madam Desai and the Rao family have tasked me with bringing the club and its fans together and that is my main aim here.

“I'm extremely excited to be working with Gary Bowyer – one of the country’s brightest young managers – and I am joining an extremely talented and committed management team, led by managing director Derek Shaw, along with hugely experienced Football Secretary Ian Silvester.

“I believe this is a really exciting time for Blackburn Rovers and its fans.”

I am not being funny but what the hell is going on at Rovers!! Another step in the right direction I think. We’re getting good news both on and off the pitch – looking forward to the Bolton game tomorrow. Maybe just maybe the owners are learning.

Good appointment on the face of it, and with his Sky Sports connections, who knows, we might get positive coverage on there :-)

I might be wrong but wasn't Alan Myers the sky sports reporter who rhymed off the reasons why steve kean should not be blamed for relegation when reporting live from Brockhall during the Paul Hunt fiasco?

Wonder if he will be up for a Q and A about sky sports conduct with regards to whats been and not been reported since the takeover and why as North West bureau cheif for Sky Sports News only one side of the story was allowed to be aired publicly?

Do yourself a favour Alan and don't try and insult the fans intelligence like former PR men did. That aside, welcome on board!

Everton was his boyhood team and are in the Premiership. He was Director of Communications for a big club. Anyone know why he left there ?
Surely not to join a small town team in the Championship.

First sentence - hope that this is true as we, the Rovers fans, have had nothing but deafening silence since the Venky's took over.

Second sentence - difficult time? Very trying and stressful and even more so when Rovers were relegated from the Premier League through the sacking of Sam Allardyce and wrongful appointment of that buffoon Steve Kean. Only true fans will stay with their club through thick and thin unlike those glory hunters elsewhere!

Welcome aboard, Mr Myers, the fans will be eagerly awaiting your first interaction with us.

Why has he left Everton ? A team doing better than ever under Martinez , in the top six of the premier league to join Rovers ? Me thinks something not quite right about this ?

this could be a good thing as long as he has is own voice and allowed to tell us as it is...the last thing we need as another Venkys puppet.

lets face it...in the past we've either been ignored and told nothing or basically lied to.

welcome on board Alan.

Jesus give the guy a chance to prove himself.

As a reporter he was paid to comment on what was going on at any club, just because some of you didn't like what he said at the time doesn't mean he was right or wrong, he was just doing his job ffs.

He works for Rovers now and anyone who has worked for Everton for 15 years, he has contacts in one of the largest sports media organisations in the world, I call that a pretty good signing for any club.

It's pretty obvious that Venky's have learned their lesson and are slowly (this time) trying to put thinks right by getting the right types of people in place, people who know football and just as importantly the media in this country.

I don't give a flying feck about the past because guess what? We can't do a **** thing about it.

Got to look forward now, not back.

Fair post Nick, the guy has a great reputation for working with social media, if he can start to get the club working openly with probably, and not surprisingly, the most cynical fan base in the country then that's a great achievement.

Good luck Mr Myers, you need a lot of patience, a thick skin and a sense of humour to survive around here, just be honest and you will be ok.

Onwards and upwards.

Come on Tinkerbell, all you will need to do is flutter your eyelashes and you might attract someone like him to the little garden shed at the top of your rosy garden, you know the sparsely populated one with the old fashioned wooden seats.

A Rover 45 years and over says...

Never know what these media guys really do for a club and what their daily activities are. Nothing wrong with the media coverage at present with plenty of information being available for LT with GB making lots of comments on a regular basis with Shaw chipping in now and again. Unless he will be there just to help Shaw out etc and give advise on general footballing matters who knows, maybe as commuications director he may be able to enlighten us.
