Andy Devanney: Clarets have the Premier League quality

Scott Arfield puts the Clarets ahead

Scott Arfield puts the Clarets ahead

First published in Football

I LAST had the pleasure of writing in this column last August.

For those of you that missed it I said that I thought that we still had a squad that were capable of taking us back to the Premier League as champions despite the loss of a certain striker to QPR.

A few people thought I had been hit by one of Charlie’s bricks.

However, after watching the first half performance against Nottingham Forest on Saturday and hearing the crowd sing about promotion I think that they are coming around to my way of thinking.

I was trying to be the eternal optimist more than a modern day Mother Shipton. But, boy, am I glad my prediction looks like it may be coming true.

Burnley were superb in the first 45 minutes after taking an early lead courtesy of Scott Arfield’s superb turn on the edge of the box and his “unbelievable tekkers” to nutmeg the Forest defender before slotting the ball past Karl Darlow.

The Clarets were certainly organised and looked to have fire in their bellies. Wave after wave of attacks contained the Nottingham Forest side to their own half. The lead was doubled by a delightful cross from Kieran Trippier that was met with a bullet header from Sam Vokes.

He doubled his tally ten minutes from the break with a deflected shot that looped in to the net.

Unfortunately football is a game of two halves. It would probably have been to Burnley’s advantage to miss it and play a full 90 minutes without a break. Such is the nature of the game, Forest came racing out of the blocks and pressed hard in the second half.

I think we still should have had a few more goals to be honest. Danny Ings had a few chances that went begging.

But to be fair the Vings partnership has resulted in more than 40 goals already this season.

That’s not too shabby. Derby County are next up at the Turf after sneaking up on us in to third place in the Championship. The term six-pointer has never been more appropriate.

If we beat them next Saturday then I believe automatic promotion is well within our reach. I can’t seem to remember who we play after that.

I’m sure that will be another three points though and maybe we might just catch The Foxes.

Derby is the real challenge. Rovers can hurt Burnley, but Derby can put them in 3rd. All hands on deck for the next Turf Moor clash. GO CLARETS!!

I don't drink, this offers me a clarity which you obviously lack. The point stated is that the Derby County match is the important one. They are right on Burnleys tail for automatic promotion in case you haven't noticed. A loss against Rovers would not hurt nearly as much if it followed a win against Derby. You are interested in local bragging rights and that's great. I have little interest in that since I have lived my entire life over 4000 miles from Lancashire. I am interested in the March 1 match. March 9 will come soon enough even though I'm sure this Clarets squad has what it takes to bring down Blackburn. GO CLARETS!!

One win away from being 5 points clear of third place. What a good place to be at the moment, and that win needs to be at home against a team we hammered out of sight on their own ground earlier this season. Just peachy!!!

Don't you just wish you could swap places with us eh don't you Single Mongle?

Are you hurting inside? Are you breaking out in a rash at the mere thought that Burnley will be lining up against the sides you mention?

Good, I hope it crushes you when we are dining at the top table again while you scratch around in the lower reaches of The Chumpionship.

It is true Rovers have players that can hurt Burnley that is why Burnley have to do the same against Derby as against Forest and I mean by that start on the front foot.

In your head we are superior and looking at the table It looks that way. I bet there was a QPR fan saying the same thing when playing Charlton and look what happened there.

The are no guarantees in this league . However if Burnley are on there game like they were last Saturday then we have a great chance against Derby to hopefully get the right result.

As for the Rovers game we can look at that one after this weekend. Remember that other factors influence a game. The team clicking from the start , the referee and his assistance and luck. You of all people should remember what happened in the last two games against Rovers. The last one a deflection off Rhodes that could have gone anywhere but in the goal and prior to that , lots of added time and players offside. So like I said the are no guarantees .

Rovers are no mugs and are on a decent little run by there standards this season and if SD and Burnley had the dismissive attitude (which they don't) you have of them we would get beat.

Sure I want Burnley to beat Derby , Rovers and every team we face in the remaining games this season. Reality is that won't happen. We are in good form as a team , playing very well and long may it continue and that's all we can do and if we get beat lets hope we bounce back like we have done in the few games we have lost and cement that 2nd place.

Derby are playing well, that's for sure, but let's not forget that we won 3-0 (that's three - nil) at their place, albeit they weren't as good then. We shouldn't be talking as though we might get beat. Look at the table, it doesn't lie, it never can. We are favourites to win at weekend because they are the underdogs and we should be thinking that way. It's Derby and their fans who should be worrying not us, let's get the insecurity out of our thinking and take on board the Dyche mentality. He's a winner and we should believe in the team.
