TEENAGE Blackburn Rovers defender Jack O’Connell has spoken of his honour at having been handed the captain’s armband during his loan spell at League Two outfit Rochdale.

The 19-year-old has made just 56 senior appearances – all on loan away from Ewood Park – but his leadership qualities have impressed Dale’s boss and former Rovers defender Keith Hill.

Now proud O’Connell is determined to lead the high-flying Spotland side to promotion.

“It was a huge honour for me to be given the captaincy and it was a proud moment for me,” O’Connell told Sky Sports.

“I have to thank the manager Keith Hill for giving me the captaincy and I want to repay him by doing my best for the team.

“I am just focusing on maintaining my performances and hopefully helping the club win promotion.”

Rovers Academy graduate O’Connell, an England U19s international, will spend the rest of the season on loan with Dale.
