Blackburn Rovers boss left fuming at Barnsley penalty decision

Rovers would have hauled themselves into seventh had they been able to hold on to the lead

Rovers would have hauled themselves into seventh had they been able to hold on to the lead

First published in Football

FURIOUS Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer insisted it was an ‘unbelievable’ decision from the officials which cost his side the chance to move up their highest position of the season.

Rovers would have hauled themselves into seventh had they been able to hold on to the lead Tom Cairney and Rudy Gestede had given them in Tuesday’s night clash at struggling Barnsley.

But they remain in ninth after they had to settle for a 2-2 draw after the Tykes converted a hotly disputed second-half penalty.

Bowyer said: “I thought we were absolutely outstanding in the first half and controlled the game.

“We passed the ball really well and cut them open many a time.

“Barnsley changed their shape to combat how dominate we were and they scored against the run of play.

“But then we scored two outstanding goals to go in 2-1 at half-time.

“We knew Barnsley would come at us and we withstood that before we were undone by what can only be called an unbelievable decision.

“If that was a penalty then how does that same linesman on the same side of the pitch not flag for the Jordan Rhodes penalty when he gets flattened and the Adam Henley one. You just can’t explain that.

“Their lad has thrown himself to the floor and if there is contact it’s minimal. It’s just not a foul.

“People will watch it on the TV and they’ll be laughing.”

Rovers were unable to build on their first-half dominance.

But Bowyer was adamant they deserved the victory.

He said: “Up until the referee gives the decision we withstood what Barnsley threw at us and we weren’t really troubled.

“We expected them to have more of the ball because of the dominance we had in the first half.

“But we had a good bit of possession ourselves and correct me if I’m wrong but their man of the match was their goalkeeper.”

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson, whose side moved off the bottom as a result of their draw, admitted Rovers should have been out of sight at half-time.

He said: “In the first half they gave us a lesson. They passed us to death at times and we didn’t get to grips with it at all.

“They picked up the ball in midfield and played through us. Getting them in at half-time was a bonus from my point of view at only being a goal down.

“We got away with it, we have to be honest.”

Yes, the point is that GB and the LT are using the article to reinforce the point to the VENKYS (remember they know sh@g all about football & they never turn up to see it with their own eyes) that if it wasnt for those dastardly biased/stupid/corrup
t officials then Rovers would be top of the league with a win every game.

Last season we used to hear this type of weekly moaning from the ginger monger down the M65 but unfortunatly this season the LT have deleted his name and just inserted GB's and re-published the article 48 hours after the end of every league match.

We can't rely of refs to win us the games,we have to rely on good management and good team performances. Refs make mistakes as do players. Its time G.B took the bull by the horns and allowed our players to win games, rather than setting up not to lose, that does not work, it stifles the attacking abilities of our players and just puts undue pressure on our defense instead of putting the other teams under pressure. We have the players to put most teams to the sword. G.B take of the shackles and play to win.

Barnsley were TERRIBLE. After the break we had about 2 attacks. That was the problem Bowyer, not the ref.

We talked about having some balls before now. You clearly have none. Grow some or step back into the coach role. We can't defend for 45 mins with a single goal lead, even under BFS we never did 45 min defending.

I've kept quiet for a couple of weeks and watched with interest. Moan, moan, moan then a burst of enthusiasm then moan, moan, moan. The last three games were all 'must win' games. Forest, lost. Derby, drew. Barnsley (bottom of league) drew. All 'must win'. I suppose Blackpool is another 'must win' eh? Players to blame, manager to blame, referee to blame. One fella this week says (unbelievably) " It wasn't Venkys fault certain players have been brought in." Oh....... Hello? Who appointed the manager who did bring them in? You Venky lovers should be getting the message by now. Keep giving them your money and nothing will change. The club is going nowhere. Either stop going or stop moaning. You're all miserable until we manage a 1-0 win then the play-offs beckon. It really is laughable. I'll leave you alone again now for a few weeks, by which time mid-table mediocrity will have set in. Still, there'll always be next year .....and the year after....and the year after.....

There are no Venky lovers, Knackersley, just those who still support Rovers by watching the football, and those who don't.

Your contribution is, as ever, pointless, your moaning will not be missed on these pages as it is not missed at Ewood.

In defence of GB he isn't the only one moaning about penalties, every manager does it, it's part of the necessary myopic make up required in the job.

Penalties never get rescinded do they?

But in all honesty I think I would be moaning about two of the last three given against us, they were appalling decisions.

But GB has to accept some responsibility because it's his tactics of defending too deep and inviting our opponents to attack that's at fault, these days once a player gets in the box with the ball close by it's an invitation for the ref to make a decision.

It's been said on here ad nauseum, we don't need two defensive midfielders, we need to push teams back into areas where we can damage them.

Saturday's game is crucial, we have to take Blackpool to the cleaners and that means getting stuck into them early.

Agreed, it was more like 92 minutes defending with 50% of that with the ball above the stands gathering snow on the way down.

The only game I can remember seeing the **** attacking in was against Portsmouth at Ewood when we were 2 -0 down early on and the crowd got on his back, telling him to get some strikers on.

He did at half time and we won 3 - 2, and he took the bloody credit!

I'm with Jose on this! lol.

Sorry GB but continually moaning about the ref didn't give us this or that is getting very boring. The reason we are losing or drawing games is because of the tactics you are playing. Drop Williamson or Lowe or both and play a more attacking midfield. I would love anyone to tell me why we keep playing Cairney out wide. In the Derby game I even think we had Cairney out wide and Taylor in the middle. Never in a million years is that right. Don't blame the ref GB, have a look at yourself. That said I will be there supporting you on Saturday.

The point of this article is to allow Gary Bowyer the opportunity to deflect the blame for a totally unacceptable result against a team rooted at the bottom of the league. Would someone point out to hi, that the Rovers fans were left fuming at his unbelievable decision to play Williamson again. Bowyer has now lost four precious points in the last two games and it is no exaggeration to say that anything less than a win on Saturday should have him looking over his shoulder. I have supported GB since his appointment, despite the fact that he has not yet come anywhere close to Steve Kean's lowest championship position. He needs to look at himself and his team rather than the referee.

GB is being out smarted on a regular basis by the opposition managers and he doesn't seem to accept this or is not learning to overcome his weakness. How many times do managers change things round when Rovers are on top and all GB can do is try to absorb their pressure hoping he can hold out. He never makes changes to counteract their changes as he doesn't seem to have an idea what to do in these cases. He is right about the penalty decisions but they usually come about when Rovers let teams get on top and he thinks he can hold them out without changing his cautious formation.Nearly every game we are having to hold out by the skin of our teeth at the end He will be under serious pressure next season in the Championship if he doesn't become tactically aware from the start.

Well I personally think that the penalty decision was ridiculous. It was never a penalty in a million years. So in fairness to GB I think he has a point. Sadly that's all we get out of a game against bottom of the league which is not good enough.

I do however believe that 2 of our most inform players Rudi and Cairny are both people that GB has brought in for pennys. So to keep saying he has to go is ridiculous as he obviously has a good eye for brininging in young talent on sensible salarys.

Changing the manager every season is not the way forward (which was evident last season) He just needs more time. I swear half the people on this site would change manager every game we lose!

Don't get carried away fellow rovers fans. You cant expect Rovers to go from the shambles it was under Steve Kean to getting back into the PL straight away. These things take time and i for one believe that GB has steadied the ship and im sure we will start to push on in the near future.

Keep the faith!
