Rovers boss challenges wide men to fill Ben’s boots

Lancashire Telegraph: Josh King has a chance to stake his claim Josh King has a chance to stake his claim

ONE man’s loss is another man’s opportunity goes the old adage – and, ahead of tonight’s trip to Barnsley, it is one Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer desperately hopes rings true.

Bowyer’s sadness at losing Ben Marshall to suspected ligament damage was still evident when he yesterday.

According to his manager, Marshall was playing the ‘best football of his life’ before he was stretchered off against Derby County on Saturday.

The winger will undergo a second scan later this week to determine the extent of the damage to his ankle. It is feared, however, he may not play again this season.

That would be a cruel blow to Rovers.

But while struggling to hide his disappointment, Bowyer does at least believe Marshall’s absence will provide a chance for someone in his thinned-down squad to stake their claim.

“We never want to lose any of our players and it’s a bitter blow for Ben,” said the Rovers chief.

“The lad is gutted because he was playing the best football of his life.

“But what it does do is provide an opportunity for someone to come in and replace him.

“But whoever it is has got to come in and carry the mantle from where Marshy left off as he’s been outstanding.

“It’s a challenge for someone to come in and fill his boots.”

That someone could be Josh King. The Norwegian international is fit for tonight’s match after shaking off the knock which forced him to sit out the 1-1 home draw with Derby.

Two of King’s best performances for Rovers have come against Barnsley.

He broke the deadlock in the 3-1 win at Oakwell last season – which marked Bowyer’s first game in caretaker charge of the club – and was on the score sheet again in the 5-2 victory at Ewood Park in August.

Rovers, in fact, have won four and drawn three of their last seven meetings with Barnsley.

And given Danny’s Wilson’s side are rooted to the foot of the Championship, everything suggests an away win tonight.

But Bowyer is not getting ahead of himself – especially after the Tykes ended their seven-game winless run with a 2-0 home triumph over Blackpool last time out.

“There are no easy games in this league,” said Bowyer.

“We’ve stressed that to the players that the game with Barnsley will be no different.

“They’re fighting for their lives and they have a determination to stay in the league.

“We know how powerful that can be so it’s up to us to match everything that Barnsley throw at us and then try and stamp our quality on it.

“They scored two goals and kept a clean sheet in their last match so they’ll go into the game full of confidence.

“But we go into the game with the confidence of taking a point off a very good team in Derby.

“We showed some great characteristics in our defending and our front two were a real handful.

“Jordan (Rhodes) and Rudy (Gestede) are forming a good partnership and we’re hoping that can build on that even further because the big man (Gestede) is chipping in with goals as well now.

“His aerial dominance on Saturday was fantastic.”

Captain Scott Dann will miss tonight’s match because of the Achilles injury that also ruled him out against Derby.

Corry Evans returned to full training for the first time yesterday after three months out with ankle-ligament damage.

Bowyer hopes the midfielder will be in contention for a starting place come the trip to Reading on February 22.

Not really. In three years at the club Ruben has had his chance, yet has failed to make our starting eleven at any stage under four different managers. Wonder why?

King has already spurned so many chances to shine. He doesn't have enough in his locker for me; head down and trying to beat everyone with his pace. Defences have wised up to him very quickly and he needs to add more to his game if he is to be good enough on a regular basis.

You never thought we'd finish above you in the league did you?

We did that last season.

So what gives you reason to believe we'll never turn you over?

Let me tell you a story.... Once upon a time, back in the days when you were but a twinkle in a Burnley taxi driver's eye, both Burnley and Blackburn Rovers were competing on a level playing field and, believe it or not, the Clarets dominated Blackburn Rovers. 10 league wins for Burnley in 14 consecutive league games, check the history books Mungo. Then you were given an unfair £100 million advantage after conning the life savings out of a senile old man and you got yourselves all worked up thinking that you were bigger and better. The truth is you're not and now that all the money has gone you're back were you belong, below us.

I can only assume that your comedy record of 34 years (29 years of which we never actually played) gives you reason to believe we'll never beat you, but I assure you we've beaten you off the park on many occasions, and those days may well be on the way back.

13 points moron, and you better hope we don't beat you because you really will have nothing left should the unthinkable happen.

really?
If I think of Barnsley at home and I think it was Middlesboro (or sheff wed), King has absolutely murdered the full back on both occasions - like as much as I've ever seen any winger do. In both games the full back ended up getting taken off. In the last 15 of the Man City Game he was also superb, causing them loads of problems.

Given the norm for the play offs in the Championship is 76 points you are going to need to average virtually 2 points per game from here on in. That of course is not easy in the Championship and means you will have to find very consistent form and a run of at least 4/5 consecutive wins at some stage.
You also have an inferior goal difference and recent results against play off contenders have been poor.
Just keeping to the facts.

3rd and probably the most important few days of our season to date. Could be 2nd on Sat, could be 7 points adrift of the top 2. Those are the simple facts and no getting away from it. Looking at QPR fixtures for Feb you would expect us to still be in it come the end of Feb, we then have tough looking fixtures in March so who knows?
I am sue you would expect to win tonight and against Blackpool.

13 points what difference in the play-offs will that make? How far do you want to go back in your history, how about the very first meeting between The Dingles and Rovers. Rovers 10,Dingles 1,have you managed that yet? How about the last few meetings,Dingles have won how many?remind us all. I know even getting a point against the Rovers is like winning the World Cup for you lot, just like your celebrations going top of league at Christmas, you celebrated like you had won the league, remind us,where are you now?
We're a point of an automatic promotion spot, a position you will never be in.

Just breaks your heart seeing us dominating you once again doesn't it?

I sense you're suffering but I hope you won't do anything silly after we tonk you at Ewood in March. We''re all friends here remember and it's only a bit of banter...

It's squeaky bum time as Rovers have it all to lose.[/p]
"Tuned over by the Clarets"?illiterate. get back to school its" turned" and you're having a laugh. Its you and your ilk that are having squeaky bums at the thought of meeting Rovers in the play-offs.Your pants are always filled.[/p]
Dear me, foaming at the mouth over a spelling mistake. Bet you're a right laugh. However, as you rightly point out we will turn you turds over in March.[/p]
There you go again, where did I make the point you will turn us over in March. I quoted your statement, moron. Time you stopped dreaming and accept that the Clarets will never turn over Rovers.[/p]
13 points moron, and you better hope we don't beat you because you really will have nothing left should the unthinkable happen.[/p]
13 points what difference in the play-offs will that make? All the babble about how many points may be required to finish in the play offs is irrelevant, there are so many clubs in contention, all very much of a sameness that they are all going to be taking points off each other right up to the bitter end.

A Rover 45 years and over says...

Josh King is a one trick pony for me with poor decision making on the final pass and wastes a lot opportunites and isn't good enogh in my opinion.Same applies for Olsson. The two ideal replacements have now been let go, Nunes and Judge. Maybe a chance for the young boy we have just signed. Pity because Marshall was starting to give us a lot of options.
