Jones: Burnley can mix it in promotion race
MIDFIELD marvel David Jones believes Burnley have got the right blend of substance and style to mix it in the Championship promotion race.
The Clarets were disappointed to be held to a point at home to Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.
Sam Vokes gave Sean Dyche’s side a deserved 43rd-minute lead, only for Chris Maguire to equalise for the Owls two minutes later.
But Jones insists they can take confidence from the manner in which they dominated possession and chances from start to finish, and take assurance that similar performances in the future should result in more positive outcomes.
“We play good football at times but also can mix it up when the game isn’t effective in that way,” said Jones.
“We’ve got different weapons in our armoury.
“We played into feet at times but also hurt them in behind a lot and created numerous chances from that.
“I’m guessing for the fans it was a good performance – one that we felt it would have been the icing on the cake if we’d won the game.
“The performance was good, we’re just disappointed with the goal we conceded, but we created enough chances to win the game.
“We were free flowing in the second half.
“On another day as we’ve displayed throughout the season so far we would have normally taken those chances.
“We’re disappointed not to win but if we play like that we’ll win more than we lose or draw.”
The squad and management jetted off to Spain early yesterday for some warm-weather training and break to help refuel for players for the last 20 games.
The Clarets have a blank weekend, with Bolton’s involvement in the FA Cup fourth round, before league action resumes with the visit of Brighton on Tuesday week.
“There are 10 days until the next game so it’s a chance to switch off mentally for maybe a couple of days,” said Jones after Saturday’s draw.
“And then we’ll get back to it and concentrate on the Brighton game.”
