Cairney wants Blackburn Rovers statement of intent

Lancashire Telegraph: Tom Cairney Tom Cairney

TOM Cairney believes Blackburn Rovers can send out a message of intent to the rest of the Championship with victory at his hometown team Nottingham Forest tomorrow.

The Nottingham-born midfielder knows it will be a tough task given Forest’s fine form and given the clash of the play-off hopefuls comes less than 72 hours after Rovers went down fighting in the FA Cup at Manchester City.

But seeing as Gary Bowyer’s side won their last away league match in such impressive fashion – against Leeds United – Cairney is confident they can claim a win which would leave them just a point behind the City Ground outfit.

“We’re going to have to recover quickly – two days and we go again,” said Cairney.

“It’s going to be another tough game as they are flying at the minute. But if we win there it would send a message out to the rest of the league, put us one point behind them in the play-offs and hopefully give us good momentum at the right time.

“Forest are a big club with a great ground.

“But hopefully we can do what we did at Elland Road and get a victory.

“But as I said they are a top team in this league so we will have to get on the recovery bed and go again.”

And should eighth-placed Rovers end fifth-placed Forest’s nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions, Cairney believes that would be perfect payback for the 4,369 travelling supporters who were in magnificent voice in midweek.

He said: “The fans were brilliant at Manchester City so we owe it to them to put on a performance at Forest, where no doubt they will travel down in their numbers again.”

No-one was more impressive for Rovers in the ITV-televised third-round replay with City than Cairney.

The playmaker stood out in the middle of the park against players of the calibre of the £30m Fernandinho.

“I can only speak for myself but to play on that pitch, against those players, and in that stadium, it’s something you dream about when you’re little,” said Cairney, who turns 23 on Monday.

“To have a chance to do that week in week out – maybe next season, who knows? It’s something that you definitely have to strive for.

“I like to test myself against the best players in the world and if I’m on the ball I’m quite confident, no matter who it is.”

Rovers paid Hull City £600,000 for Cairney’s services earlier this month after his initial six-month loan deal expired.

Boss Bowyer knows he has got a bargain.

He said: “We knew all about Tom and now nationally everybody else knows about him. He was outstanding on Wednesday night.

“Now he’s got to continue that.”

Just like Robinson wanted to make "a statement of intent" against Man City, we all know how that one turned out.

I think it's damage limitation for Rovers this weekend, Forest are flying at the moment after league wins over QPR and Leeds, and destroying West Ham in the cup.

i think our players are congratulating themselves a little bit too much for losing 5-0 on Wednesday.

yes cairney did look neat and tidy in the first half but he had a great chance to put taylor in and didn't do it and the capitulated in the 2nd half.

there were positives but not as many as seems to be coming out of Ewood

Notts Forest are currently benefiting from extremely positive coverage in the national press as people get excited about a potential promotion. They, along with Leeds and QPR, are in the group of clubs that the neutrals want to do well this season. Yes they are difficult to beat, but so are most teams in this division. Reporters like to come up with Forest-positive statistics like no defeats in nine games, yet fail to mention that they have only won 5 of their last 16 in the League. They beat both QPR and Leeds at home over Xmas yet both of those sides were/are on poor runs at the time. Contrast with Rovers who have won 8 of their last 16 and I don't see what all the fuss is about. Any side that contains Darius Henderson and Matt Derbyshire in their ranks is nothing to be afraid of.

If Rovers have serious aspirations of finishing in the top six they will need to finish above the likes of Forest. My only concern is that playing in a big game on Wednesday night will have drained some of the players. Thankfully we should have Rhodes & Gestede fresh on Saturday.

You'd be better putting your money towards a ticket at the Turf, rather than pretending you go to watch when actually you spend your Saturday afternoons on here.

We were playing arguably the best team in the country at the moment. Top Prem teams have come away from City with drubbings this season. I would expect a more normal display this weekend in keeping with our current Championship form.

I Agree yes we played alright but to be realistic we didn't have a shot on goal all night and our forward play was non-existent and it was only a matter of time before they broke us down, without Rhodes our goal scoring is poor and this is a problem

King had a couple of chances that I remember (header and shot) which Rhodes might have put away. Anyway it's back to the bread and butter stuff this weekend and with, hopefully, a near full strength team we should get something at Forest.

Hi HB
Agree about the bread and butter stuff, I think GB did well keeping Gestede on the bench because he won 95% of the headers against Lescot in the first match and it must have been tempting to put him on again, let's hope he comes back with a bang along with Rhodes and Dann, we will need them!

I think it's damage limitation for Rovers this weekend, Forest are flying at the moment after league wins over QPR and Leeds, and destroying West Ham in the cup.
Why dont you just go crawl back down the little scabby infested hole that you came out of. Nobody cares about your opinions, nobody cares about your club, nobody cares about your little insignificant life.

You are just a pathetic little man sat at home - wishing you had tried harder at school and managed to get a job, instead of living in your little rot hole.

You don't like rovers - we have all got that point by now. Move on you waste of a life.

Yaaaaaawwwwn. Give it a rest Mark / Gaz. I'm sure there's a trucker somewhere that needs sucking off in your favourite layby
I'm sorry David, as much as I'm concerned for your well being and I do appreciate how lonely you get driving your truck on the night shift, I'm just into that kind of thing. Perhaps you could approach Lancs - pensioner, he's a very lonely person and would be grateful of any human contact, just ask him to take his teeth out before he starts.
WLUV - just like all of the other Roves fans, I find your ramblings extremely tedious. I would like to read other fans opinions, not your dross.

That said, I would like to point out that you have just agreed that you are in fact "just into that sort of thing" (re-readyour resonse above). Hopefully you now feel suitably embarrassed to go away for a long time and leave us in peace. We now know what you would rather be doing!

That settles it then.

Nottingham Forest 2 - 0 Blackburn Rovers.

Goals from Darius Henderson and Matt Derbyshire.

Get a tenner on it.
You'd be better putting your money towards a ticket at the Turf, rather than pretending you go to watch when actually you spend your Saturday afternoons on here.
you mean you have to pay to watch that rubbish at the turf? well I never!
Sacre bleu!!! How can you say that. There have been some superb matches at Turf Moor this season. I can’t recall any 0-0 ‘s like Rovers serve up.

Now we know why they banned you. Disgraceful.
Hilarious!

Ignoring the retarded inbreds seems to have little effect, so abusive, degrading retorts would seem to be the order of the day. Personally I'd opt for a program of infertility/chemical castration, but apparently that breaches their human rights! What if we just pay you all to become sterile? In fact what we'll save on Scott Dann's wages would probably cover it. A sound investment, a lot like Connor Mahoney; future proofing!
