Bring on Manchester City says Rovers star Rudy Gestede

Lancashire Telegraph: Rudy Gestede Rudy Gestede

GOALSCORING hero Rudy Gestede insists a trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City in the FA Cup on Wednesday holds ‘no fear’ for Blackburn Rovers after he fired them to back-to-back Championship victories.

Gestede, who notched the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 success over Doncaster, acknowledges that the rest of the country will be expecting Gary Bowyer’s side to be on the end of a heavy defeat in the third-round replay at City.

However the in-form striker believes that will allow Rovers to play without pressure – just like they did in the initial 1-1 draw between the teams.

But after his side survived a huge fright 10 days ago Gestede accepts City manager Manuel Pellegrini may be tempted to name an even stronger line-up for the decider – meaning recalls for the likes of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri.

“There is no pressure on us in the game because people think we are going to lose 5-0,” said Gestede, who scored his first goal for Rovers in the New Year’s Day win at Leeds United.

“It is the same as the home game as there was no pressure on us then either.

“I think Manchester City are going to treat us like a proper team.

“All of their players are already good players but maybe this time there will be even more of them on the pitch.

“It is a big game and a good game to play in and we will do our best.

“There is no fear from us, no pressure, nothing.

“We are happy to play in this game because we all want to play football in places like that against big teams and now we have got the chance to do it.”

While relishing the prospect of locking horns with some of the world’s best players Gestede’s primary focus remains on winning promotion to the Premier League for the second year running.

The 25-year-old hauled Rovers up to eighth on Saturday after his first goal at Ewood Park settled a hard-fought contest with relegation-threatened Doncaster.

Benin international Gestede, who was part of Cardiff City’s title-winning squad last season, said: “I am very happy to score but we won and that is the main thing.

“The first half was very good but the second half was harder for us but we kept working hard and showed how hard we work for each other.

“It was a good three points.

“As long as you win games it doesn’t matter if it is 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0.

“It is still three points so if you could win each game 1-0 I would take it straight away.”

Josh King missed the match with a minor hamstring injury.

Rovers boss Bowyer hopes the winger will return to training today.

Go out and enjoy it, play just like we know you can, meeting the Dingles in the play off final at Wembley is more important, COYB.

Who knows what the score will be ? Plenty of Prem teams have come away from City with a bag full against them. There's no disgrace going there and conceding a few as long as we put up a fight and try to win (unlikely).
The main thing is we go and give the young players a taste of the big time. The experience won't do them any harm and as Gestede says no one gives us a chance anyway. At least we're still in it, unlike others we could name.

You have to wonder how much this game affected Rovers performance in the second half on Saturday.

Agreed, we treated them with due respect at Ewood but we certainly weren't scared of them so I don't see any reason to be scared at the Etihad, just go out and enjoy it guys, in football you never know.

Honestly Nick, never crossed my mind and I dont think the players thought about it either ( but I could be wrong)
I just think Donny were up for the scrap in the second half and you have to credit for their effort and spirit

Josh King can be the key man...hungry to prove a point, just back from fitness and not in the starting XI at the moment - he's got the power and ability to cause anyone problems on his day

Hey it is the FA cup so who knows, City did not look great at times yesterday, Negredo is one to watch though, to me City are weak with high balls to their far post and do not like being attacked,..... again it is the FA cup and underdogs will pull a few surprises every year so go get ‘em Rovers

Yes the lads should enjoy the game, play as we know they can and soak up the atmosphere. A decent display again should give them confidence to continue climbing the league.

Lett Spurr put a few long throws into their six yard box then. Might cause a bit of panic?????????

It's probably good to know that our away form is actually quite good then, poor start but putting together 2 wins and a draw in last 3 away games has come at just the right time. Happy days.
