Top six is our aim says Rovers ace Spurr

BLACKBURN Rovers defender Tommy Spurr will be out for revenge against his former club Doncaster tomorrow – a match he sees as crucial to his side’s promotion prospects.

Spurr came in for plenty of stick from former team-mates after Rovers lost 2-0 at Doncaster in August.

But the left-back, who made the move to Ewood Park just two weeks before that match, is certain he will have the last laugh.

Spurr said: “I got a lot of stick after the defeat at Donny. I had to take it and hopefully we’ll get our own back on Saturday – which I know we will!

“The defeat hurt all the lads but especially me having just left Doncaster. It was a real downer.

“But I think we’ve come through that stage and now all the lads know what they are doing and what we are trying to work toward – and that’s to get into the top six.

“And we know if we’re going to do that we need to win these type of games against teams that are lower down in the league.”

Spurr’s confidence is well placed.

Third-from-bottom Doncaster arrive in Blackburn on the back of a winless run which stretched to eight matches last weekend after they were dumped out of the FA Cup by League One basement boys Stevenage.

Rovers, in contrast, are buoyant after they halted Manchester City’s seven-game winning run with an impressive FA Cup draw.

The league victory at Leeds on New Year’s Day moved Gary Bowyer’s side within two points of the play-off places.

Should they win tomorrow and results elsewhere also go their way they could find themselves in the top six for the first time this season.

Spurr said: “The lads have been in high spirits and full of confidence after the results we have had.

“But we can’t take Donny lightly.

“They beat QPR at home and they gave them a fright at their place last week when by all accounts they played really well and should have won. They also showed at the Keepmoat they can beat us.

“But if we play like we did against Manchester City our quality will shine through.”

Spurr was one of 13 signings made by Bowyer in the summer as the Rovers boss started the overhaul of a squad that finished just four points above the relegation places last season.

Spurr said: “I think when you look at what has gone at the club and the amount of new players who have come in, it was never going to happen overnight.

“But I think performances over the last month have been good and we’ve probably deserved more points than what we’ve got.

“Hopefully that will change and we can go on this run that we’ve been talking about and get into the top six.”

Let's hope we can achieve a top 6 place. We'll need to perform much better than at Donny, we were pretty abysmal that night.

Great Tommy

Is this the limit of their ambition

3rd or 4th place would give better playoff odds

great when supporters have higher expectations than the players.

Makes all my 320 mile round trips even more comforting.

As Bowyer says - lets not get too excited if we win or too excited if we lose ie think of the big picture which is in general an improving situation at Ewood.

Although I wish the players would just keep quiet until they've played the game - too many occasions we've upped ourselves before a game and then crashed down.

Having said that I think Spurr has been one of the most consistent performers we've had - he's on his mettle for every game.

I think it will depend on how Donny approach the game - if they try and play football I think we'll be ok. We've struggled against the more physical sides at home. We could do with an 'enforcer' to wheel out for games like Birmingham...a modern day Glen Keeley would be ideal in the Championship - our centre backs are far too soft!

Spurr is the great signing of the season for GB, Offcourse Cairney is a quality replacement for pedersen.
As striker - Rudy Gestede will shine with his head. Still need more time to prove his consistancy and accuracy.

Rochina - what a waste of talent.....why he is not performing when he get the chance.........., I used to watch the la lega matchs he played. he is a quality player and an attacking option with his style, moves and angles. GB need to speak with him or send him to other club with loan option in this window like goodwillie. We love to see him in action. God Bless.

They don't make em like Glen K any more! I'm not sure he would ever play these days, probably be suspended most of the time.
