Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer proud by team's FA Cup Manchester City display

IT was a proud Gary Bowyer who faced the media after his side held FA Cup favourites Manchester City to a 1-1 draw in this afternoon’s FA Cup third-round tie between the teams at Ewood Park.

Bowyer said: “It was an absolutely phenomenal effort from our lads playing against a world-class team.

“We always knew it was going to be a very difficult challenge but you could see the spirit that they have and the character they are developing.

“It’s a young squad that is improving but you could see the unity they have together.

“That has been important for us throughout the season.

“I have nothing but pride and praise for them.”

City manager Manuel Pellegrini said: “They had a lot of motivation and that is normal when you have a Championship team playing against a Premier League team.

“I’m not disappointed. Of course, everyone wants to win all of the games but we were playing against a very strong team at home.

“I am sure if they played like that in the Championship they would be in another position in the table.

“I would be disappointed if we lost and were out of the FA Cup but we are not out and we must play at home.”

The replay will take place at City’s Etihad Stadium home on Wednesday, January 15 (7.45pm).

For a full reaction – including that of returning Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson – see Monday’s Lancashire Telegraph.

well done lads......and Gary.

we made a world class team look like an average championship team....it was hard at times to think this was the same side that has been so inconsistent....and i hope that this game along with the win at Leeds give the lads the confidence to push onwards and upwards.

i've been well known to give Burnley the credit they're due after some good performances and their league position.....lets see if they're man enough to give us credit where it's well and truly deserved.....over to you Burnley!

Excellent performance again as we continue to gain in confidence. We have found our feet after a shaky last few months but better things are now just around the corner. Looking forward to the second half of the season. Well done GB and the lads and keep up the good work. We don't need to fear anyone in the Championship now.

City: Pantilimon, Boyata, Nastasic, Lescott, Clichy, Milner, Fernandinho (Yaya Toure 64), Javi Garcia, Silva (Zabaleta 88), Negredo (Jesus Navas 75), Dzeko. Subs: Hart, Kompany, Kolarov, Lopes.

Saints make five changes:

A home draw against Sheffield Wednesday and a home defeat by Birmingham doesn't really appear to be an improvement. But then your sights have been lowered somewhat over the last few seasons haven't they, it seems that mid-table in the Championship is a good season for you lot. Keep it up.

I was so proud to be a Rovers fan today, I didn't think we would get anything out of the game but also knew we wouldn't embarrass ourselves..
A draw at home to City, well done GB and the lads,
They will probably finish us off at the Etihad but it will be an excellent experience for some of our young players and they can only learn from it.
So glad I was there today, I know some of my mates are naffed off now that they didn't bother going and it also means our cup run will be lasting longer than the Dingles!!
Onwards and Upwards lads....

If we continue to play like that we will be in a higher position in the Championship Pellegrini You was embarrased today because your multimillion pound squad was matched in every department with football skill every bit as good as yours. You could not tell which team was top of the Prem and the other a Championship side. Your fans were chanting 6-1 for the first 10 minutes and in the last 10 minutes were stony silent bracing themselves for a last minute defeat. Insult us at your peril this young and improving recently assembled team, might just come and bite you on the bum in the replay. I hope we do.

I just hope that Burnley can cling on to a play off spot so that we can take them on the final!

You will have to admit it, were improving fast at the right time. The league isn't won in the first half of the season.
A home draw against Sheffield Wednesday and a home defeat by Birmingham doesn't really appear to be an improvement. But then your sights have been lowered somewhat over the last few seasons haven't they, it seems that mid-table in the Championship is a good season for you lot. Keep it up.

Rag, I hope the City players have the same cocky attitude because we'll take you apart again with our full team and Jordan will slot in a couple. You were rattled and if it was a boxing match the ref would have stopped the match. Anyway, I'm glad that we're talking about competing with a billion pound team instead of our unfortunate neighbours down the road. Well done to our boys today, and Robbo is like a new signing...he'll have his eyes on Brazil in June :) COYB

Not really mate. To be "east lancs number 1" you're going to have to start by not loosing to us in march & then you'll have to spend the next 3 and a half decades either not loosing to us or in a higher division than us, during which time you're going to need to, at the very least, win or buy (doesn't really matter, winning is winning) the premier league and the league cup, you're going to need to qualify for European competition on numerous occasions, win a European group containing teams such as feyenoord and fc basle, you'll also need to reach several cup semi finals, sign and develop players that people have actually heard of, drastically update your stadia, infrastructure and facilities and all this whilst keeping the rest of Lancashires teams quiet. Even then, you will only have equalled what we have done.

Best get started eh?

Half Season Report
GBs work in progress teambuilding well ahead of schedule.
Some high wage earners and non contributers to the cause have been released from the club - and some decent and quite talented footballers who actually want to play for the club brought in.
Average age of the side reduced to around 24 years old with a nice mix of experience and youth and with good back-up in most positions and a big plus in that plus we now have the excellent prem and international experience of Paul Robinson back in the side - which will help Jake Keans progression at the club.
Money been spent already in the Jan window to buy two very good proven premiership players in Cairney and Gestede - and anther big plus is that Jordan Rhodes looks to be staying at the club.
A new year and we can see that a `new belief` is slowly taking hold around the club as GB builds a very decent side on and off the field. Strong possibility that the Rovers can soon be pushing hard for a play-off place this season.
Keep up the great work GB and team.

I'd be more worried facing Forest than City after that display.

you can bet City will be putting out their first team for the replay, though even Zabaleta and Toure coming on made little difference to the way we bossed them at times. 30% Rovers possession to their 70% and almost the same shots on goal says it all. City might have the skill to keep possession but our back four were solid the full 94 mins with only that corner gaff allowing them to break through.

Had JR been on earlier I'm convinced we could have taken it yesterday.

Biggest joke are Burnley one season in Premier League and went down in one season. Blackburn Rover the biggest and best club in Lancashire wearing red rose on shirts.
Blackburn were PL for 18 yeas
won the PL title in 1995 ony five PL clubs to win the PL title
MAN UTD
BLACBURN ROVERS
ARSENAL
CHELSEA
MAN CTY
Dingles will never win it in million years
In 2002 BRFC won League Cup beating Spurs 2 -1
BRFC still gets more crowds than Burnley FC
Blackburn is the biggest town in East Lancashire and the retail capital of East Lancashire
Blackburn with Darwen the biggest local authority in Lancashire population 147,500
Blackburn Rovers simply the best.

All good points there FR, the rebuilding on and off the pitch has been impressive. I set a target of Top 10 for the half way point to demonstrate a good performance by GB. We actually missed it by a couple of days, but having started poorly with an unfamiliar team, to now be so close to the play offs is better than I thought we would get.

Venkys seem to be letting GB get on with the job and while he keeps progressing the money has appeared as you say.

I hope the recent form can translate into more consistent performance because we have been guilty of some slack and sloppy play, sometimes for half the match, and I still feel we lack the on field leadership (particularly when Dunny is missing) But as players return from injury the strength of the bench may now enable GB to be more confident and adventurous in his substitutions.

Onwards and Upwards, top 6, which seemed a long way off in August, is now a very realistic target.

Great performance. You were awesome. Loved the fight between Hanley and The Carrot. Obviously you will lose the replay but the money will pay the odd wage or two. Pity you dont get any points for all that effort.
Such a half hearted compliment....with a sting in the tail.
Keep it up.
Are you looking forward to the cup draw tomorrow?

What number are Burnley?
WHAT NUMBER ARE THE CLARETS?

EAST LANCASHIRE NUMBER ONE!!!!
