Shaw delighted with Cairney and Gestede captures

Lancashire Telegraph: Tom Cairney Tom Cairney

BLACKBURN Rovers have completed the permanent signings of on-loan pair Tom Cairney and Rudy Gestede with managing director Derek Shaw hailing the double swoop as ‘exceptional’ business.

Cairney and Gestede put pen to paper on three-a-half-year contracts, tying them to the club until summer 2017, after their loans from Hull City and Cardiff City respectively ran out.

The fees for both players have not been disclosed but it is believed Rovers have paid Hull around £600,000 for Cairney having been told to double their initial offer of £350,000 for the 22-year-old midfielder.

Cairney, who was being chased by other Championships clubs, was out of contract at the KC Stadium in the summer.

Had Rovers waited until his deal with the Tigers expired they would have gone to a tribunal to determine a fee given Cairney’s age.

Striker Gestede, who scored his first goal for Rovers in Wednesday’s excellent 2-1 victory at Leeds United, joins from Cardiff for a smaller fee.

And Shaw was delighted with the signings.

He said: “They are two exceptional deals for Blackburn Rovers which fit the bill in terms of our pricing policy and recruitment strategy.

“We have already seen some terrific performances from Tom and I’m sure Rudy will also become a fans’ favourite.”

“We have to thank the owners for supporting the club and the manager’s wishes.”

Rovers owners Venky’s stumped up the cash for the signings – after manager Gary Bowyer admitted he has to slash the club’s wage bill during this month’s transfer window – something he is still working towards.

Cairney has scored two goals in 24 appearances for Rovers and said: “It was a very easy decision to make once I knew they wanted me permanently – and it was the same when they wanted me on loan, I wanted to come straight away.

“It’s a great group of lads and the staff have been great. I settled in straight away so I’m delighted to have put pen to paper on a contract.”

Gestede initially joined Rovers on an emergency loan from Cardiff in November, making six appearances for Rovers so far.

He said: “It’s a big club and so I’m very happy to stay here.

“Everybody was very welcoming with me when I joined. They tried to make me feel at home and that’s happened.”

Rovers captain Scott Dann, meanwhile, is a reported target for Crystal Palace but Rovers have not received a bid from the Premier League outfit.

He isn't the only one.

Finally, after three horrendous years Rovers appear to be getting their act together, These guys could easily have gone back to their clubs and hung on for a better offer to come through, the fact they have signed within 48 hours of their loan periods running out shows they like what they see, and have said as much.

Still a long way to go and we have to ship out the deadwood one way or another, they are what are holding us back at the moment.

Two weeks ago the Lancashire Telegraph reported that Rovers had to sell players before they could buy. Yesterday the club spent an estimated £1 million on two new signings without anyone having left the club.

I can almost taste the disappointment from this paper that once again their theories have not come to fruition. Venkys continue to bankroll the club and well done to them for doing that. Despite alarming losses they have backed the club and the manager with funds.

No doubt we will now get day after day stories about supposed interest in our players. Rovers know who they want/need to get rid of and will concentrate on getting those out rather than sell their first team players.

All we need now is to keep Jordan Rhodes and for Burnley to sell Ings for a couple of million and it will be a good window for us and a disastrous one for the LET.

I'm sure all true Rovers supporters (and ‘followers’) will be delighted with the signings as well.

I have said on here before, and I will say it again, I don't think Rhodes will leave in this window (or the summer). There will be lots of scare stories and debates about someone coming in with a ‘mad’ offer but I don't see any sign that he wants away or any sign that anyone at the club wants him to leave. Long may it continue…

I like this new try before you buy policy its worked well with King, Cairney, Gestede and possibly Kane.

Only wish we did it years ago with the likes of Grabbi, Kevin Davies, Leon Best. thats a good 15 million we would not have wasted just on those 3.

As a "follower" of the Rovers I too wish to endorse the positive comments of all those with an interest in the Rovers. At the moment the impetus is with the club. Wanted players are coming in. Star players we have been assured are staying. Surplus players may be leaving soon. The season is starting to take shape. There is no reason why the present staff cannot get the club into the playoffs. We just need to see the same endeavour displayed in the Leeds match. Then who knows what the end of season will bring?

What the heck is Best going on about he should feel privilidged to be at Rovers with the money he is on whether he is playing or not I can understand his frustration at not being selected much. But he is being very well paid to be frustrated and should keep his mouth shut. If he has now fallen out with GB it will be his fault as GB doesn't seem to be a difficult guy but will not suffer fools gladly.

Just got to hope Gary can do the business and get some success that the whole club now deserves.

i agree with most of what you all are saying....a good bit of business and in a short space of time....no messing around, Gary got in there and got their names on contracts.

i don't really know how i feel about the possible Dann deal, but we must trust Gary to make another good call.

i do however draw the line and always will at thanking the chicken lot....the mess at this club is their doing, and i will not thank them for attempting to put things right.....they never should have bought into something they knew nothing about.

i also think as many of you do that this window would be a good opportunity to move some dead wood, and then there maybe scope for Gary to add one or two more new faces if he feels the need to.

on a brighter note...just got my tickets for the City game....whooop

Why would anybody from the PL want to sign a gobsh1te little thug like best who can't get a game in a very average mid table championship side?

Yet more evidence of "no dad" delusion, from supporters who think they've found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow because you've signed a couple of no marks who can't get a game for poor PL sides.

Do you want Burnley to sell Ings because you're frightened of what he's gonna do to you on 9th March ?
Same thing he did in September?
You weren't scared of him then....YOU ARE NOW.
We're looking forward to 10th March more tbh because we'll get some peace and quiet on these pages from you idiots for a while.

How about just keeping it shut and then maybe rubbing it in IF you ever beat us instead of putting your head and the chopping block every year and being red in the face after 96 minutes lol???
No mill Hill, you're having it whatever the result. Let's see if you can rely on a jammy deflection, an offside goal in the 300th minute of added on time or maybe even a dive for a penalty this time? Or how about dragging the opposition attacker down in the the last minute when he's clean through?

Don't take it personally, Knackersley can't cope with more than one friend, if he doesn't concentrate fully on just one conversation he might slip up and say something positive.

If WLUV has damaged ribs it's probably the result of a right good kicking from his brother-in-law.

Aye I'll take any of those four options to shut you lot up for 48 hours or so. Hard to pick a favourite isn't it but I'm gonna go with Williamson's rugby tackle, might be because it's fresh in the memory though. Having said that I celebrated Dunn's goal more so maybe that one pushes Williamson into second. Ings would haved spaffed his chance anyway, too many nerves from your lot when you're playing the biggest game of your lives. The club needs to fork out (I know that's not what your owners like to hear) for a sports psychologist to come in or something to try and exorcise some demons.

Oh and regarding WLUV, I reported him a week or two ago as his boring, mindless vitriol was contributing absolutely zero to any decent minded football discussions. Looks like the LT agreed with me! Perhaps he had the sense not to bother creating another account just to waste his time trying to wind up the fans of an opposing team on the comments section of a local newspaper. Maybe you could take a leaf out of his book and "get a life" as they say?

Hmmm. Is this the same Shaw who has been allegedly running the club at this end? You know, the one that everybody on here has been calling hill-to-burn on here for appointing rubbish managers over the past couple of years, is it? Nah. Can't be. Can it? People wouldn't change their spots that quickly because Venkys have spent less than a million on two players, would they. Nah. Must be a different Shaw.

I still believe our defence requires strengthening as we leak too many goals ,hopefully the game at Leeds may teach Bowyer where he has been going wrong tatically as we definately require 2 strikers up front to win games or score more than one goal it has been blatantly obvious all season. Well done on the signings pity that bargain signings for good young players was a far off dream when Kean and Shebby were here but it looks like GB /Shaw is getting it right and the Venkeys are backing them with funds.

Yes, I am absolutely thrilled with the new signings as I was anxiously waiting to hear if Cairney would sign for the Rovers. As for Rhodes, he has mentioned in interviews that he is happy at Rovers, etc and I do hope that you are right, that he will not leave during this window (or the summer). Where would Rovers be without Rhodes? At the same time, we cannot wholly depend on Rhodes to score the goals, others need to do it as well!

Best isn't a team player, GB want's team players.

Best is all about Best, first, second and last.

I haven't seen a single game where I thought Best had put a full shift in, if I am wrong on this someone please point out when and where.

IMHO at 99p he is way overvalued.

Mind you at that price he would be worth every penny for Burnley, they would probably have to sell their ground to pay his wages though, mmm, another silver lining. lol

I must confess that I have criticised GB for being too cautious but his tactics were spot on and these signings are great evenif I still have a few doubts about Gestede.
Things definitely looking up if GB continues with the attacking tactics and we might just make the play offs.

I like this new try before you buy policy its worked well with King, Cairney, Gestede and possibly Kane.

Only wish we did it years ago with the likes of Grabbi, Kevin Davies, Leon Best. thats a good 15 million we would not have wasted just on those 3.
Seconded.
Pity we couldn't have try-before -you-buy with the Venkys. We' still be in the Premier now, and I'd have my Jack Walker Central season ticket.

'God Help the Rovers when they have to depend on people like these' , congratulations you finally got something right, there wouldn't be a Rovers if we all ran away like you when times got tough.
I thought you might show up Too dark now for star' spotting on the A59, eh?
Actually numb nuts I didn't think your earlier comment worth a response, but as you seem to need details, i will type slowly so even you can understand. I was actually driving along the A59 yesterday, DGs large 4x4 with the personal plate would be difficult to miss, unless I had my head up my arse like you !

Now don't you worry, I'll be around, always happy to point out your lies and fantasies whenever you try to pass them off as facts. I've caught you twice already, let's see if you can resist a third go.

Instead of being just a 'follower', why not become a supporter again?

If you mean do I have the intelligence to recognise different types of car, yes, I will plead guilty to that one. It's a fairly basic ability that can be developed by anyone with observational skills and memory. You really are not very good at this are you. I can only see one striker going to the premier and that's best! Have a read back at what you've just posted then realise how stupid you sound? Why would anybody from the PL want to sign a gobsh1te little thug like best who can't get a game in a very average mid table championship side? Yet more evidence of "no dad" delusion, from supporters who think they've found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow because you've signed a couple of no marks who can't get a game for poor PL sides. It doesn't take much to please you sandle wearing meths chuggers. PMSL !
Oh dear Mug, see how bitter and twisted you get when you team up with Knackersley and Dave. You would be better off going back to playing spoons with your mate WLUV.
I tried to sympathise with Grumpy Eckersley last night but he just mugged me off ! Don't know what's happened to WLUV. He might be recovering from rib surgery after all the laughing he's been doing at your latest escapades.
I think WLUV is busy watching the collection of Rovers DVDs he got for Christmas.
haha yes...here's a game for you SteppBladder, possible names for Rovers DVD's versus possible names for Burnley DVD's.....I'll start with a couple:

Rovers; The Premier League Years
Burnley; The Premier League Year

Blackburn '95 - Winners of the Premier League
Burnley '87 - Winners of Football League Survival
Blackburn '14- Administration
