GARY Bowyer has urged Blackburn Rovers fans to rally around their side today when they attempt to end Birmingham City’s long unbeaten run and finish a turbulent year on a high.

Rovers go into their final game of 2013 on the back of a Boxing Day 0-0 home draw with struggling Sheffield Wednesday which left some supporters unimpressed.

Bowyer was surprised that a smattering of boos accompanied the final whistle although he could understand the frustration.

Now the Rovers boss hopes to banish that frustration with a vital victory from the visit of Birmingham.

But Bowyer believes his 11th-placed team, who have gone a season’s best four games without defeat, will need the full backing of the Ewood Park faithful to help overcome the Blues.

He said: “We understand the frustration everybody felt after Sheffield Wednesday so the best thing is to have a game quickly to try and get that out of the system.

“As I said after the game on Boxing Day you have to respect every point you pick up in this league and that’s what we have done with the Sheffield Wednesday point and we go into the Birmingham game on the back of a four-match unbeaten run.

“It’s very easy to be negative. You always have to be positive and try and take something out of it and that’s what we’ve done with the players.

“They were frustrated, and we understand that, and so were the fans, and we understand that too.

“But we’ve just got to keep plugging away and continue to try and pick up points – and it will be no different against Birmingham.

“They are unbeaten in eight so it will be a tough game.

“We’ve just got to make sure we prepare correctly for it and for everybody to get around us and support us and we will try and win the game.”

Should Rovers end Birmingham’s eight-match unbeaten run – which along with Derby County’s, is the longest in the Championship – they could move within one point of the play-offs.

“When you talk about statistics like that you certainly have to be pleased with the progress we’ve made,” said Bowyer, who as the club’s caretaker manager kept Rovers up last season before being handed the job on a full-time basis in May.

“You have to remember that but equally as I have said to the players, we’ve not achieved anything yet.

“We have to keep working hard and look to end the year on a high against Birmingham.”

Bowyer is hopeful David Dunn will be fit after he missed the Owls clash with a hamstring strain.

Fellow midfielder Chris Taylor was stretchered off in that game after landing heavily in a challenge for the ball.

The sore Taylor did not train yesterday. However there is a chance he could play tomorrow.

Rovers, meanwhile, remain in negotiations with Hull City over a fee for Tom Cairney.

Tomorrow’s match represents the midfielder’s penultimate game of his six-month loan from the Tigers.

Hull are willing to sell and Cairney, whose contract runs out in the summer, is keen to remain at Rovers.
