Simon Garner column: McClaren is the man to follow for Blackburn Rovers
ROVERS should look at what Derby County have done and be inspired.
Since Steve McClaren has gone there they’ve come from nowhere to find themselves right in the thick of the play-offs.
And they’ve done that by putting a string of wins together.
The Championship is so tight.
So if a team can win three, four, five games on a run – or a six in Derby’s case – they will soon be right in the mix.
Blackburn now have the perfect opportunity to do that.
Tomorrow’s game at Yeovil will not be easy.
They’re on a nice little run, unbeaten in four, and they’re fighting for their lives.
But it is a game Blackburn should win.
They should go out there and be confident after the excellent point at QPR and the win over Millwall.
And if they can beat Yeovil it would set them up perfectly for the home games against Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham over Christmas.
I see no reason why Rovers can’t win those games either as I believe they have the players capable of doing it.
Slowly but surely I think Gary Bowyer is getting his players to understand what he wants them to do and how he wants them to play.
I understand the win over Millwall was an ugly one – but it doesn’t matter, they just had to build on the draw at QPR.
I was at the QPR game and I thought Blackburn looked a very strong outfit.
What impressed me the most was how they worked hard for each other.
They never gave the opposition space on the ball or time on the ball, which you’ve got to do in the Championship.
They came up against the best team in the league, with all the money, and I think they should have come away with a win let alone a point.
The performance proved to me that Rovers can go away from home and pick up points.
If they continue to perform that way on the road they will win more than they lose.
And there’d be no better place to start doing that than at Yeovil tomorrow.
