BLACKBURN Rovers legend Simon Garner believes DJ Campbell’s arrest for spot fixing could be the ‘tip of the iceberg’ of match fixing allegations in football.

And Garner, pictured left, who watched a Rovers side including Campbell draw 0-0 at QPR on Saturday, blasted the 32-year-old striker saying he he should be banned for life should the accusations prove to be true.

“I hope that he is innocent but if he is guilty of doing it he is a very silly lad and his career is finished,” said Garner.

“If any player is found guilty of match fixing they should be banned for life.

“It’s defenceless.

“This could be the tip of the iceberg in football.

“You have to wonder whether there are many more cases.”

Garner added that Campbell’s Rovers team-mates would be disappointed at the allegations against the former QPR man..

Garner added: “When I first heard the news I was very surprised.

“I wouldn’t expect DJ Campbell to be involved with something like that, because of the money he earns and the moves he has had in his career.

“I feel for the fans. I feel for the club as a whole.

“If he is proven guilty he has let the manager down and he has let his team-mates and fans down, and that’s inexcusable.

“If I was his team-mate I’d be angry with him.”

Rovers have had more than their fair share of problems over the past few months and the Campbell scandal has rocked what was appearing to be a more stable ship according to Garner.

He added: “It’s something the club didn’t need.

“I was at QPR on Saturday and it looked like things were settling down a bit with the team itself. They did alright at QPR.”

And Garner added that he also had sympathy for Rovers boss Gary Bowyer.

“Gary Bowyer has got enough on his plate getting the side out of the Championship,” added former striker Garner.

Rovers are at home to Millwall on Saturday.
