BURNLEY’S top scorer Danny Ings could miss his first game of the season, against Watford at Turf Moor tonight through an ankle injury but midfielder Brian Stock insists the Clarets still have plenty of ammunition.

Ings’ ever-present tag could come under threat as the result of an ankle injury he suffered against Huddersfield in Burnley’s second league defeat of the season.

The striker needed treatment in the first half but returned to the action, scoring what proved to be a consolation goal in a 2-1 loss, and completed the game.

Ings took his tally for the season to 17 in all competitions, including two for England under 21s.

But manager Sean Dyche said there were question marks over his availability, and his fitness would be assessed in the run-up to tonight’s home game with Watford.

Any absence would leave Sam Vokes as the only recognised senior striker to select from.

However, if Ings does not make it, Stock insists there is still enough firepower in the side to trouble the Hornets.

“Although he has scored the majority of the goals we’ve proved all season there are goals throughout the team,” said Stock.

“Scott Arfield’s scored (four) from midfield, Sam Vokes has scored plenty.

“We’ve got goals in the team and it’s been a real advantage for us this season.”

On a personal note Stock is hoping for a first league start this term after replacing David Edgar at the break against Huddersfield and with Dean Marney still struggling to shake off a thigh injury.

“I was first and foremost pleased to get on the pitch,” said the 31-year-old.

“It’s been quite a frustrating season for me but understandably given the quality of the performances of Dean Marney and David Jones, and being top of the league you can’t start knocking on the manager’s door saying you want to play.

“It’s been an indifferent season for myself and one where I’ve had to look after myself. I’ve not really had a season like this before.”

The former Bournemouth and Doncaster midfielder added: “You have to bide your time, which I’ve done, and if I get called upon make sure I’m ready and be in the best condition I can be.

“And although we’ve lost our 12-game unbeaten run we need to start and maintain another one.”

But Stock expects a stern test from Watford, who are bidding to arrest a run of six games without a win, while Burnley are searching for a first win in five games, after having a 12-game unbeaten run ended by Huddersfield.

“That’s the beauty of the Championship, not many teams put back to back victories together and the ones that do find themselves up the top of the league.”
