We can hang on to top spot, says Burnley defender Trippier
KIERAN Trippier believes Burnley are more than capable of holding on to top spot in the Championship – insisting their current league position is no fluke.
Against all expectations at the start of the season, the Clarets moved top of the table with a 2-0 win at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night.
Burnley’s form perhaps went under the radar for a period in the early weeks of the campaign but Trippier knows the spotlight is now on them.
Fifth-placed Reading, regarded as one of the favourites for promotion, are the visitors to Turf Moor on Saturday.
Trippier admits he has never been top of the league before in his short career but, asked if the Clarets could handle the spotlight and stay there, the 23-year-old said: “Of course we can. It’s no fluke where we are.
“We’ve got the players to do it and the staff to do it.
“As long as we keep doing well on the training field we’ll take it on to the pitch and I think we’ll do very well this season.
“We’ve all worked hard together and dug in together.
“We’re like a big family as a team and we’re all willing to dig deep for each other, on the pitch and off the pitch.”
The Clarets have made their best start to a season for 52 years but the right back thinks they could still get even better.
“We can,” he insisted. “We’ve got so much quality in that dressing room, even off the bench.
“The subs coming on, I know it’s hard but they’ve contributed so much, like Junior (Stanislas) against Blackburn.
“They’re all willing to play their part and even the people that don’t get on the bench, if they get the opportunity I think they’ll take it.
“It’s been a brilliant start to the season and we’ve kept a few clean sheets already.
“Teams will have to work hard against us because the fitness levels of all the boys are ridiculous.
“We’re all willing to work together, we believe and the atmosphere is really good in training.
“We don’t worry about anybody else, we just concentrate on our game.
“Now we’ll concentrate on Reading. We won’t look beyond that, we’ll just concentrate on the next game.”
