Former Burnley star Jay Rodriguez backs Clarets striker Danny Ings to be next top scorer
A FORMER Clarets top scorer has backed Danny Ings to be the next.
Jay Rodriguez left Turf Moor for Southampton after firing 21 goals in the 2011/12 season.
His goal scoring boots were filled by Charlie Austin, who surpassed the Burnley-born striker’s tally with 28.
Rodriguez admits he feared for their firepower after losing Austin to QPR last month. But the former England Under 21 international added Ings’ instinct for goals has not come out of the blue.
The 21-year-old (left) has hit five goals in the opening seven league and cup games to help fire Burnley into third place in the Championship and into the third round of the Capital One Cup.
"It doesn’t surprise me one bit because whenever I have seen Danny, he has been a quality player and has already scored some great goals for Burnley," said Rodriguez.
"When Charlie left I thought Burnley would struggle to score goals because of what he did last season but Danny has done brilliantly.
“He seems to have struck up a good partnership with Sam Vokes which of course is vital. Sam has scored a few unusual goals lately, goals he hasn’t really known too much about - but as a striker you take a goal no matter how you score it!”
And Rodriguez was pleased to see the duo combine to get Burnley off to a flying start, giving the Clarets confidence going into Saturday's derby.
“It’s great to see Burnley doing so well and they have had a great start to the season. They are my team and I always look out for their results," he said.
"I haven’t had a chance to see them this season but I am hoping to get up for a game soon. It would be great if I could go to the derby match but I’m not sure if I will be able to make it."
