No bids for Blackburn Rovers star Jordan Rhodes
BLACKBURN Rovers insist they have had no bids for star striker Jordan Rhodes while reiterating that the Scotland international is not for sale.
Rhodes is understood to be on Newcastle United’s lists of targets as they bid to secure a strike partner for Loic Remy.
But Rovers’ managing director Derek Shaw said the club had not received any contact from Newcastle – or any club – regarding Rhodes, nor would they welcome any.
“We’ve had no contact from any club, and that’s how we would like it to stay,” said Shaw And Rovers boss Gary Bowyer reiterated that there were no plans to sell Rhodes – with Bowyer having sought assurances from Venky’s earlier in the summer. “There have been no bids for him,” said Bowyer.
“We do not want to sell him.
“When I flew out to India at the start of the summer that was one of the things I wanted to clarify and I wanted to make sure that we could keep hold of our best players.
“Jordan is a very important player for us and he is a top professional.
“You only have to look at his goal return last season to see how much of an impact he has for us.
“We certainly have no desire to see him go.”
Bowyer did admit he would have to manage the situation with the player should any bids arrive for the 23-year-old, but until then the Rovers boss is planning for a full season with the striker.
“I think you have to look after all of the players individually and react to them.
“But like we say we have not had any bids for him and he is happy here.”
Bowyer will watch Rhodes in action for Scotland against England tonight at Wembley with defender Grant Hanley also in Gordon Strachan’s Scotland squad for the friendly.
“It is great to see two of our boys in the squad and playing in such a big game,” Bowyer added.
“I am sure there will be plenty of banter flying around if England beat them when they come back and likewise it will be the same if Scotland win.
“We also have Todd Kane in the England Under-21 squad.
“We felt his form warranted a call-up last season but it wasn’t to be for the tournament in the summer but he fully deserves his place in that squad.”
All three will be available for Rovers’ Championship trip to Doncaster Rovers on Friday night.
Rovers have been linked with moves for Middlesbrough midfielder Grant Leadbitter and Malmo striker Tokelo Rantie – but Bowyer confirmed there had been no contact over either player while adding that Mauro Formica remains in talks to leave Ewood.
