GOAL hero David Edgar insisted Burnley would “fight to the death” to preserve their place in the Championship.

The Clarets went into Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against newly-promoted Cardiff City just three points clear of the relegation zone.

But Edgar’s late, equalising header rescued what he hopes will prove to be a “massive point” in their quest for survival, against the champions, giving Burnley a bit more breathing space going into the last two games of the season.

The difference is now four points, with games at struggling Wolves and at home to Ipswich Town to round off an unpredictable 2012/13 campaign.

Edgar admitted his second goal of the season was met with relief all round.

“You could sense it throughout the stadium and throughout the team. Hopefully it was a massive point for us,” said the versatile Canadian, who was quick to recognise safety is not yet confirmed.

“There are still two massive games to come that we know we can take six points from and that’s the aim, to finish the season on a high and put the looking over our shoulders behind us.

“It’s a crazy league. To even be in and around it after it seemed like we were doing really well, it’s tough to take. But that’s the situation we are in and we need to deal with it.

“We’ve been trying to keep things as normal as we can but it’s no secret – we all know the situation, we all know the league and the league table.

“It’s not so much an anxiety – we know we shouldn’t be here but we are and we just have to deal with it. The second half showed that we’re going to fight to the death.”

But Edgar, a half-time substitute, admitted Burnley didn’t deal with the pressure in the first half against Cardiff, who went ahead through Craig Conway’s goal before the half-hour.

“I think it happens all the time. You get nervous, you’re in a situation where anything can happen, it was sort of a nervous first half but we settled down in the second half and we took the game to them,” he said.

“We came out with a bit more credit in the second half.

“We had a much better second half and we pushed on from there. The keeper made a fantastic save, Ingsy (Danny Ings) couldn’t do much more with it.”

“But we fought back and got the equaliser.”

Of their remaining two games, Edgar added: “We know if we go out there and play with freedom we'll get the points. We know we're a good enough side.”
