COMMENT: Managerial farce has become the norm at Blackburn Rovers

AT any other football club you would say the latest managerial twist at Ewood Park was unbelievable. At Blackburn Rovers, you almost take Michael Appleton’s sacking as the norm.

Just where does it all stop? You can’t help thinking the continued farce will never come to an end until owners Venky’s are just a horrible memory in the club’s history.

No one can say the owners aren’t throwing money at their ‘toy’ - too much probably - but the lack of any real footballing knowledge means they continue to make massive mistake after massive mistake.

Fair enough, Appleton was certainly pulling up no trees as Rovers boss but a huge injury list surely had some part to play in a recent dismal run of results.

Appleton isn’t the only boss who was struggled to achieve at the club, in fact every single one has failed under these owners. Doesn’t that tell us all that there is far more wrong with the football club than the identity of the manager?

The reason Eric Black was never given an opportunity as full time boss, after stepping in as caretaker from Steve Kean, was he told them the squad simply wasn’t good enough to get then promoted. Thanks but no thanks Eric was the reply.

After the Henning Berg experiment - driven by global advisor Shebby Singh - Appleton was given the nod, mainly due to the recommendations of directors Derek Shaw and Paul Agnew.

With Singh completely out of the loop, Appleton was given the green light to start rebuilding the club from top to bottom - a job he insisted he would need at least a summer to complete.

Now, not even halfway through his rebuild, he has become the latest managerial victim with Shaw and Agnew this time not involved in the decision making process and Singh taking the lead.

Farce, shambles and humiliating spring to mind.

This football club is a ship without a rudder and is sinking without trace the longer the shambles continues.

It was not long ago that Blackburn Rovers were a proud football club with some of the very best administrators in the game. Now, well the last two and half years tells its own story.

You can’t help feeling things are going to get worse before they get better as well, with many not realising the financial implications of the Ewood circus.

With the money already spent on the squad this season, Rovers will be making significant monthly losses and now they have to shell out for another managerial pay-off.

I like, respect and rate Gary Bowyer but what a job he has on his hands to now keep this football club in the Championship.

Rovers have long since needed stability and that is almost an impossible dream under owners Venky’s.

I still have no doubt their hearts are in the right place but, until they sort out the structure of the football club and get ‘football people’ running the football club, things are never going to get better.

When people used to hear the name Blackburn Rovers, it was associated with professionalism, respect and jealousy.

Now the club has become football’s laughing stock but for the people who matter, the fans, there is nothing funny as they watch their club die before their eyes.

Every time these clowns of owners sack another manager it makes it harder to bring in someone capable of doing the job.

Any manager needs his own squad and his own pre-season to get the job done. If Venkys want instant success they should appoint someone who has a track record and some capability of delivering.

They, and they alone, are responsible for the shambles that our Club has now become. The players must be totally demotivated and the emotional cost to the fans is huge.

For all the worthy intent of the various supporters' groups there is nothing that we can do as fans except sit back and watch this slow-motion car crash.

They are the muppets who appointed Steve Kean, They are the muppets that allowed him to carry on until well after relegation. They allowed Kean to appoint Hendry, They got rid of a board and staff who, until they arrived had done a fantastic job. They appointed Shebby, They appointed Agnew, Shaw and the appointments of BERG & M A. They oversaw the sacking of both managers. They are the ones that have run this club into the ground. No one likes Blackburn Rovers and this is in part due to the horrific treatment given to Steve Kean. We were playing absolutely woeful football; far worse than what we were seeing under Berg. And the injuries, to my mind, were no excuse.

I think he messed up massively in the transfer window and has paid the price. Anyone could see that the primary target should have been a good CDM. That was overlooked, and our best (except for Rhodes) players were shipped out.

Very good point indeed. There are and have been other 'farces' if you like with foreign owners and even with the very rich owners like Chelsea and Man City have, what hapens when they get bored with it? I think foreign owners should be made to pay large 'holding' deposit when they buy an English club which they forfeit if they make a mess of the club as judged y the FA.. The FA then retuns this deposit to the club. Problem is is the FA capable of running something along these lines?

Given that the owners managed to pass the F A fit and proper, it is about time the fully investigated what is going on here. They are not even remotley like fit and proper the are overseeing what is fast becoming a car crash of a club.

This sort of thing can happen to any club and it about time that the powers that be, started to really look at the rules for fit and proper.

I have a terrible feeling that the club will sink into oblivion before and now HAS to be the time for the fine to really show they owners what we think of them.

Their was rejoicing when it was thought that Shebby had gone,what doyou think now,he was hiding in the wings waiting his revenge and Shaw is ostracised again.
This cannot go on where one side of management are waitng for the manager to fail just so the others will lose face.Shebby must go Shaw and Agnew must go I don't know who but a football chairman or executive must be apppointed.The murpheys and etuhus of this world world must be moved on,so that a new manager can be appointed free of the dross brought in by KEAN,SHEBBY AND HANS CHRISTIAN.Only then when we look like a professional football club can we move on,but I won't old my breath.

Secondly the players themselves surely won't want the indignation of another demotion? Whenever Tony Parkes filled the vacant position he did well and I think Bowyer will do OK and keep us up. Anything else would mean the end I believe not of Venkys per se but of the club with Administration a probability.

What you fail to see FT is that of SK's overall managerial record. Look on wikipedia on your PC (a.k.a. Devil box in Burnley). Unfortuantely managers are judged on more than a 2% spell of thier tenure. Yes we were second when Kean "stepped down", but I would have placed thousands on the fact we would not have reached the playoffs under him.

it's all too easy to say Kean had us in a good position but if you actually went to those early matches - we were playing teams that were TOTALLY afraid of us (e.g. Hull), we were playing mainly bottom half clubs and the performances were TERRIBLE. I distinctly remember walking out of Ewood feeling like we had lost on multiple occasions because we sneaked a cheeky goal and didn't deserve to win at all.

Yes we were second when Kean "stepped down", but I would have placed thousands on the fact we would not have reached the playoffs under him. it's all too easy to say Kean had us in a good position but if you actually went to those early matches - we were playing teams that were TOTALLY afraid of us (e.g. Hull), we were playing mainly bottom half clubs and the performances were TERRIBLE. I distinctly remember walking out of Ewood feeling like we had lost on multiple occasions because we sneaked a cheeky goal and didn't deserve to win at all. MxMave

You were calling for Berg to be sacked before he even had a chance to get any of his own players in. Both Souness and Hughes had difficult starts at Rovers but were given time to bring their own players in and change it around. It's a good thing for Everton that their board stuck by Moyes when he had a bad run early on otherwise they might have ended up like us.

And before you say I'm being an apologist for Appleton, you can go back and see that I was advocating Billy Davis before Appleton's appointment. Let's face facts, Berg and Appleton failed primarily because Kean's signings, including Murphy, are very, very poor.

Any of the three listed would be a good choice, but would they risk their reputation knowing the last two managers got sacked after only a few games? Only those managers that have failed elsewhere and are looking for one last chance (or payday) are likely to be interested in taking a job under the Venky's sadly.

The Venky's have had three opportunities to show their ambitions for the club, and each time they've gone for the cheap option. Sadly things could get even worse soon.

It must have been impossible for him to get the team all pulling in the same direction - so I feel for Appleton right now.

But the biggest issue in all this is the club itself. Many fans are talking about Adkins or Hughes. Are you serious? Do you really think a talented up and coming manager would touch BRFC right now. Taking that job might earn you a few bob in the short term - but longer term it would be the biggest career limiting move imaginable.

No-one in their right mind will be sending their CV off to Blackburn in the hope of landing the manager job. That's a crisis for BRFC - I don't see good things for you guys in the immediate future. I'm 53 and have hated BRFC for nearly all those years - but right now I just feel a bit sad for you.

What im trying to say is , kean did get a result at old trafford , big sam got hammered . Problem then and now is the advice the owners are given and advice kean was given ! Bring mark hughes in with his back room team and let him sort out how the club should be run . Under him , rovers where professional through and through . GB is just another stooge being lined-up for failure in the Venky pantomime. Nice guy but just another fall guy and he comes cheap.

He did really well during his short spell in the hot seat before but there wasn`t the same pressure on team GB then as there will be now. He has been tasked to keep us in this division and nice chap or not he simply does not have the experience to do that.

I cant understand any fans welcoming this-latest turn of events - and when you see so many on here who seem to now be on the same wavelength as dangerously deluded dave and his many alter-egos in celebrating this, then you have to ask yourself have the lunatics taken over the asylum. Sadly I think they have.

Especially so seeing that some fans still actually have expectations that Venkys will bring in an experienced manager. Surely they must know that those expectations are beyond belief and beyond hope.....

GB is just another stooge being lined-up for failure in the Venky pantomime. Nice guy but just another fall guy and he comes cheap.

He did really well during his short spell in the hot seat before but there wasn`t the same pressure on team GB then as there will be now. He has been tasked to keep us in this division and nice chap or not he simply does not have the experience to do that.

Even Venkys must have realised by now that they are totally out of their depth, their ownership has been an unmitigated series of disasters, and nobody of any quality will work with them.

I suspect that the current burn rate of 2-3m a month will not be tolerated for another season, I guess one can only hope that somebody offers them way out and buys the club for a nominal, but undisclosed, amount that allows them to save face.

i agree greenscreener, the money is being burnt and very wastefully, but must be the parachute money and with another 16 million next season then I dont think we the owners are going anywhere soon. I say the only course of action is to take to the owners, be that in London Switzerland or Pune. That IMO is the only way to show them we are serious and only way to shift them.

Even Venkys must have realised by now that they are totally out of their depth, their ownership has been an unmitigated series of disasters, and nobody of any quality will work with them.

I suspect that the current burn rate of 2-3m a month will not be tolerated for another season, I guess one can only hope that somebody offers them way out and buys the club for a nominal, but undisclosed, amount that allows them to save face.

i agree greenscreener, the money is being burnt and very wastefully, but must be the parachute money and with another 16 million next season then I dont think we the owners are going anywhere soon. I say the only course of action is to take to the owners, be that in London Switzerland or Pune. That IMO is the only way to show them we are serious and only way to shift them.
Can we just clarify one thing? The parachute money is INSTEAD OF the full TV revenue from the PL, it is not IN ADDITION TO it.

There is not £16m lying around. The wage bill will not have reduced much and paying off a manager every couple of months won't help. They've sold all the family silver and spent the proceeds largely on expensive and valueless dross; there will be no transfer profits to save the figures this year as they did last. With about £25m less income from TV alone, the club will be lucky not to lose £30m this year which is unsustainable whichever way you look at it.

The parachute money goes down next season, we will still have players on big contracts and will probably have another half dozen managerial pay offs at this rate; so how long do you think Venkys will foot those kind of bills?

BRSIT's target for buying the club was £10m. Venkys paid about £20m with £23m debt when it was still in the PL with the financial benefits that brings. The debt's still there and the club is bringing in a fraction of what it was when they bought it. With no sign of either improving any time soon, £10m is ways more than it will be worth by this time next year . Who knows, Venkys may cut and run before the sh!t really hits the fan (or should that be fans) if someone came up with that sort of cash now.

They would have a helluva mess to sort out; a very expensive mess at that but this club is only going one way whilst Venkys are in charge and it isn't up.

GB is just another stooge being lined-up for failure in the Venky pantomime. Nice guy but just another fall guy and he comes cheap.

He did really well during his short spell in the hot seat before but there wasn`t the same pressure on team GB then as there will be now. He has been tasked to keep us in this division and nice chap or not he simply does not have the experience to do that.

I cant understand any fans welcoming this-latest turn of events - and when you see so many on here who seem to now be on the same wavelength as dangerously deluded dave and his many alter-egos in celebrating this, then you have to ask yourself have the lunatics taken over the asylum. Sadly I think they have.

Especially so seeing that some fans still actually have expectations that Venkys will bring in an experienced manager. Surely they must know that those expectations are beyond belief and beyond hope.....

Please make a my dream come true and dear Lord relegate Rovers. I've hated this bunch since the days of the old 2nd Division with Simon Garner. Chorley v PNE at Ewood Park 1986 FA Cup. Rovers BUYING the 2nd division with Dalglish then BUYING the Premiership. Only to get relegated four seasons later. A peculiar following, where no one goes to away matches south of Birmingham and home matches are only anticipated if a club from Manchester or Liverpool is in town. People you know who say they like Rovers because it's a status symbol that they support a premier Lancashire team, but you know they have not been on Ewood since the days of Shearer and Sutton. And then it was a corporate freebie.

It there is one team on planet earth with the worst fans it's Rovers. Rarely travel to away games. Hound their manager at home games with banners. 8500 for a FA Cup 1/4 final. Yet turn out for the camera's when it's a live game on SKY for Man United/Liverpool.

I hate Rovers. Going back to the mid 80's.

I don't care for Blackpool, Bolton or Burnley. But at least these clubs have a standard and a following.

The fact is according to the Media Shebby has taken the last 2 months out to sort his legal position out and he left Appleton the letter did not even tell him to his face.The in fighting at the club is wreking things again although it is reported Shebby has not been to Brochall for 2 months I have seen him in Whalley with an Asian guy both wearing training tops with their respective initials embroidered on so the only place they could have been is Brockhall..

Hi greenscreener, sorry search as much as I can, I can find nothing even remotely positive in even the darkest corner of this mess now. GB is just another stooge being lined-up for failure in the Venky pantomime. Nice guy but just another fall guy and he comes cheap. He did really well during his short spell in the hot seat before but there wasn`t the same pressure on team GB then as there will be now. He has been tasked to keep us in this division and nice chap or not he simply does not have the experience to do that. I cant understand any fans welcoming this-latest turn of events - and when you see so many on here who seem to now be on the same wavelength as dangerously deluded dave and his many alter-egos in celebrating this, then you have to ask yourself have the lunatics taken over the asylum. Sadly I think they have. Especially so seeing that some fans still actually have expectations that Venkys will bring in an experienced manager. Surely they must know that those expectations are beyond belief and beyond hope.....
Even Venkys must have realised by now that they are totally out of their depth, their ownership has been an unmitigated series of disasters, and nobody of any quality will work with them. I suspect that the current burn rate of 2-3m a month will not be tolerated for another season, I guess one can only hope that somebody offers them way out and buys the club for a nominal, but undisclosed, amount that allows them to save face.
i agree greenscreener, the money is being burnt and very wastefully, but must be the parachute money and with another 16 million next season then I dont think we the owners are going anywhere soon. I say the only course of action is to take to the owners, be that in London Switzerland or Pune. That IMO is the only way to show them we are serious and only way to shift them.
Can we just clarify one thing? The parachute money is INSTEAD OF the full TV revenue from the PL, it is not IN ADDITION TO it.

There is not £16m lying around. The wage bill will not have reduced much and paying off a manager every couple of months won't help. They've sold all the family silver and spent the proceeds largely on expensive and valueless dross; there will be no transfer profits to save the figures this year as they did last. With about £25m less income from TV alone, the club will be lucky not to lose £30m this year which is unsustainable whichever way you look at it.

The parachute money goes down next season, we will still have players on big contracts and will probably have another half dozen managerial pay offs at this rate; so how long do you think Venkys will foot those kind of bills?

BRSIT's target for buying the club was £10m. Venkys paid about £20m with £23m debt when it was still in the PL with the financial benefits that brings. The debt's still there and the club is bringing in a fraction of what it was when they bought it. With no sign of either improving any time soon, £10m is ways more than it will be worth by this time next year . Who knows, Venkys may cut and run before the sh!t really hits the fan (or should that be fans) if someone came up with that sort of cash now.

They would have a helluva mess to sort out; a very expensive mess at that but this club is only going one way whilst Venkys are in charge and it isn't up.

1) yes everyone knows the parachute lolly is to make up for the loss of tv revenue and
2) 10 Million wouldn`t buy the club as the venkys wont accept a rupee less than they paid for it plus the new owners would have to cover/guarantee the 23 million debt also.

The Venkys do cheap when it suits for sure but they wont sell cheap.
