'Selfish' Dunny shows he is a real team player

MICHAEL Appleton has hailed David Dunn’s “selfishness” and “passion” after calling for yesterday’s 1-1 draw to be the catalyst for an end of season revival.

The Blackburn Rovers boss revealed he asked all of his squad to tell him something about themselves during a ‘team exercise’ at the hotel on Saturday night and insists it helped him learn more about the “man not the player”.

Dunn’s 95th minute leveller spared Rovers blushes at Ewood Park yesterday and, with his contract up in the summer, Appleton was full of praise for the 33-year-old midfielder.

He said: “Dunny is a talent. He is one of those people similar to me in that when people want to knock you, he wants to prove them wrong and that is why I respect him as player and a person.

“He has probably been written off over the last couple of seasons but he keeps coming back. I was delighted for him.

“We talked about a potential new contract after dinner on Saturday night and I said ‘it depends what you over the next nine games’. He did remind me of that as he jumped on my back going into the dressing room after.

“The coaching staff behind me kept saying ‘are we alright with Dunny? We might have to take him off. I’m thinking ‘no’ if anyone is going to produce a moment it is Dunny. The fact it is Burnley and his passion about that club and this club was the decision that made me keep him on.

“At the hotel I told them to give an insight into the man not the player. I asked them ‘what motivates you, a fact I didn’t know about them’. It was interesting what came out.

“I took them out of their comfort zone because I knew at some point they would be out of their comfort zone and didn’t feel comfortable. That came at half time when we were 1-0 down. We got the reaction we got. “Dunny was telling me how selfish he was because he is an only child. That sums him up as a person, not in a bad way. The fact he got the goal, and I had the trust in him to keep him on the pitch that says it all.”

Burnley deserved the 1-0 half time lead they took through Jason Shackell’s header and looked as though they were going to hand on to maximum points even after the sending off on Ben Mee.

But, as Dunn’s late leveller moved Rovers four points away from the drop zone, Appleton insisted his side deserved the point.

He said: “I thought for the effort alone in the second half and the boys keeping their discipline where Burnley lost theirs, we stayed patient “The crowd at times were willing us to put the ball in the box but when you have centre halves as big as theirs it is not that easy.

“We stayed patient, luckily we kept Dunny on the pitch and hopefully that can be a catalyst for the next two or three games.”

WHAT WAS YOUR WORD APPLETON ????

- Stubborn
- Inflexible
- Sycophant
- Clueless
- Incapable

The result yesterday was great .. but it masked an otherwise lacklustre performance ..

SCENARIO - you are 1 down AT HOME to your biggest LOCAL RIVALS .. your team are playing poorly with no URGENCY or seemingly great EFFORT .. What do YOU do manager ??

INSPIRE THEM WITH PASSION AT HALF TIME BREAK U DIMWIT !!!

MAKE CHANGES USING SUBS & DIFFERENT TACTICS U HALFWIT (jordan is no long ball target man FFS!!!)

CHANGE THE CLUB CAPTAIN DANN WHO CONTINUALLY CONCEDES OUR FIRST GOAL EVERY GAME !!!!

A loss at Bolton / lucky draw against Burnley / what next against Blackpool ..

There had better be passion & subs used in that game !!!!!

Give the manager a chance!
It's going to take a long time to sort out the train crash that has been going on for the past two years. He talks with some honesty and common sense. Not like previous clowns we've had.

We win at Turd moor and they smash up THEIR own town.
They draw at Ewood and push out the windows of their OWN bus and have to travel back to buhnlay freezing.

Another inept Rovers' performance.

The team desperately needed the introduction of a creative player such as a Rochina - but remember Appleton couldn't wait to ship all the creative players out in January just days after his appointment.

Is it any wonder why we do not score goals any more?
Before the Burnley game we had failed to score in 5 out of the previous 6 games.
Our £8M striker is just not getting any service.

Appleton then replaced the likes of Rochina & Vucavic with inferior loan players such as;-
Rekik - too slow and not up to the pace of the game.
Campbell - hasn't looked like scoring in 7 or 8 games before his mystery injury.
Bentley - he has lost the little pace he had 4 years ago,
Stewart - lightweight, easily brushed off the ball. Not good enough for both Hull & Burnley this season so why did he sign him on loan?

As for Leon Best, he has been a huge disappointment so far. He hasn't won one header against a centehalf in the past 3 games, he was at fault for Shittu's goal and didn't appear to be trying yesterday.

Once again Givet remained on the bench when the obvious substitution yesterday was to bring him on and push Martin Olsson further forward
Instead Appleton brought on young Josh Morris - why?”

Even if we do stay up, based on his recruits to date, I have doubts over his ability to build a sucessful team.
I hope I am wrong.

The backroom staff were asking you if we should make a change. I'm surprised you actualy talked to them as you stand there arms folded all game!!!! When they went down to 10 men we should have made the change then. A defender should have been off and a new striker brought on. One nil down at home playing against 10 men and we still have one striker on the ptich....what is going on???
Also you are happy to punt the ball 70 yards for it to come straight back but then when we geta free kick on the edge of the box nobody knows whom should be taking it and when we do finally take it Jones tries to flip the ball up in the air and it comes to nothing, do we practice this in training???. Again we get a corner and don't want to put the ball in the box. Utter shambles with your tactics and in my opinion this a big relegation battle looming as i can't see a win coming anytime soon.

I hope you are wrong too, but I don't think you are. Simply cannot understand this hoofball - clearly its at Appleton's instructions. Straight from the kick off, pass back to Dann, hoof it up. Strangely in the last 2 games they started to pass the ball in the last 10 minutes or so. Almost as if the players are thinking "we've done what the boss wanted for 80 minutes and it hasn't worked, now we'll try it our way". Most teams do it the other way round. Pass the ball to feet, hoofing it in the last few mins if they need to.

Never been the greatest Dunny fan. He couldnt complete a full game in the prem, managed to wing a two year contract and has hardly featured in recent time. But he was the only player capable of pulling anything out yesterday and is now a true legend and will go down in the history of the club.
He was the one true high note from a team that is in demise and reflects what started 2.5 years ago. How sad, we were grateful for a point from a very average Burnley team. COYB.

Wild Rover, when you wake up in the morning, throw open the windows and gaze out on the Manxman estate do you say to yourself " this is wonderful, this is the Babylon of East Lancashire?" No, of course you don't. You look at it and you say "this is a sh1thole", because that is the reality. So when you are watching the Rovers with Kean kicking long ball after long ball to immediately give away possession and draw the opposition on why do you not also face reality in the same way. Rubbish is rubbish and it has no redeeming features and, unfortunately, there is no sign of anything else coming out of Ewood at the moment.

But you keep telling us what a cack team we are, we will be playing Preston next. Surely you should be able to beat us with 9 men if we are as bad as you say or at the least hang on to the lead you had. Persistent fouling, feigning injury and timewasting got you. And it was very funny. We laughed at the deprived Burnley fans all the way back to the car.

Well, to remain in this league, I think 55 points is required looking at the table. That means we need 9 points from the remaining 9 games.

I really can't see us winning again this season as we have a team of reserve players hoofing the ball up to Rhodes who is not a target man. Add to that the negative atmosphere and lack of confidence that the players are showing and it all feels very familiar - this stage last season anyone?

I think it's League 1 next season people. Maybe, just maybe ,Venkys will cut their losses if that happens? They could trouser the transfer fee for Rhodes, Best, Robbo, Olson (the good one), Hanley and Dann and sell the club for a quid! They will have made themselves a tidy little profit over the last few seasons and obviously had the brand awareness that they clearly wanted......no such thing as bad publicity don't they say!

Maybe league 1 to get rid of Venky's will be worth it. Start a fresh with proper football people and give the club back to the local community. Sad to see what has happened over the last few years. Venkys, you are a disgrace and I hope your empire goes tits up and you end up on the streets like the stray dogs you are.

We can't blame Venkys or Shebby cause it was that clown Shaw who picked you as the new manager.
Shaw Agnew Shebby and Hendry are all clowns in charge and Rovers is sinking fast like a Titanic .We are a laughing stock lying bottom of the table in 18th place.
Venkys must hire an experience manager and bring back John Williams as Chief Executive and spend about £50m on transfers cause Venkys got BRFC on the cheap £46m .Arsenal FC was offered £1.5bn from arab consortium.
£50m is chicken feed for Venkys cause they are billionaires .Venkys did say they are here for a long haul and there were reasons why they bought the club and it is a long term investment.

Undeserved equaliser? Both teams were poor but Burnley controlled the first-half and Rovers controlled the second-half, even before Mee was sent off. You defended well after you went down to ten men, as seems to be the norm, but with three times as many shots on target as you it was only fair that we got the draw. As for celebrating like we did when we got a last gasp equaliser, we had good reason to. We managed to maintain our 34 year old record. You equalised with a last gasp equaliser at your place in December and celebrated just as vociferously. The only difference being that you hadn't actually achieved anything.

Blackburn's problem is that their fans are a set of massive ingrates.

Steve Kean battled hard for you and it was all out of his selfless love of BRFC. And how did you repay him? With your pathetic little marches up to the Town Hall and mis-spelled banners.

Rochina was just ashow horse, a circus performer. Glad he has gone, did nothing!

Leave Dunny alone, he's the only member of the playing / coaching staff with blue and white blood running through his veins. A life long Rovers fan and it shows when he plays. He loves the club, always has done , always will do. I'd give him the managers job , he might not be "badged up" or done the FA @rse-licking course but at least he'd give a f**k about the club which nobody else has done since those slimy Indian punka-wallahs took over.
You're right about Appleton though, best indication that players have no respect for the clown.
If we had 11 David Dunns in the side on Sunday we'd not be celebrating a hollow draw against the dingles , we'd have sent their hooligans back to the cess-pits they crawled out of , smarting from a 8loody good hammering.
