Appleton hails Blackburn Rovers' 'magnificent' display against Millwall in FA Cup quarter final (From Lancashire Telegraph)

This was a very good result. Okay it wasn't the best to watch but we have a team who have hardly played together and the more they do, the beter it will become. Good to see Dunny King and Best back. We will improve as time goes on I am positive of that.

Magnificent - Not the word i would use, but an excellent chance now to play at Wembley.

Not sure if Best will be fit enough to play so would like to see Gomez given a start!

Welcome for Dunn. ever in his short visit, create some positive move from his position........give more time to Gomes also to smell the grass. He is really a star so just use it until kazim is fit.

Decent result although it remains to be seen whether Rovers, under Appleton, will ever be able to retain possession and actually demonstrate an offensive gameplan which actually threatens the opposition.

I was under the impression that the police insist on 10 days notice of cup replays.

With regard to Dunny, I have often criticised him for not playing enough games - especially this season.
However, it was good to see him back yesterday - surely he must be better than some of the players who have been selected in central midfield such as Murphy, Etuhu, Lowe etc.

Nevertheless I don't see him ever lasting a full 90 minutes.
I hope he can prove me wrong in the next 2 games.

We haven't won a game since our unexpected victory over Arsenal. We need to start doing so, or we'll end up in a real relegation dogfight. We are only SEVEN points from the BOTTOM of this league, so this extra game against Millwall is the last thing we needed. We NEED to beat Burnley, because we'll not beat Blackpool, then it's Cardiff and Wednesday away.
Some people are still saying we have an outside chance of the play-off's. That's not being positive, that's delusional.

They couldnt string passes together, nobody provided options for passes, nobody looked like they wanted the ball, second to everything. Non-existent midfield. Tactically every poor. Maintained a four-man midfield which was overwhelmed all game whilst keeping two ineffective players up front.

And... while we're being honest. Scott Dann was very poor yesterday. I dont remember him winning one header.

We are actually only six points clear of the relegation zone and with the way we are playing at the minute, I can't see us getting a win in the next four. I am hoping I am wrong, because if we fail to win any of these then the pressure is well and truly on.

Appleton is looking to contain teams, but given that we have failed to score in all but one of our last 6 games, I am seriously beginning to question his tactics.

I was at Bolton and saw the game on T V yesterday and can honeslty say I found both games incredibily boring. I am all for sayg get behing the team, but please give us something to shout about!

This tells you just about everything you need to know about Appleton. A narrowly scraped nil nil draw that we never deserved against a miserable Millwall team and this is magnificient? MA, why on earth would you call being totally dominated by a poor Millwall side "a magnificent display?" The display was woeful. The result was lucky. The team quite simply cannot play football. When Kean kicks every single ball the full length of the pitch and he is coming a long way out of his area to do the same thing at free kicks it becomes obvious that this lack of football is your strategy. Training days must be short because there is only so much you can do stood at the far end of the pitch hoping for a lucky bounce and watching the ball sailing by high overhead. I am surprised that Madame Venky with her self-professed "philosophy of passing football" will let you keep doing this or is that just nonsense like your "magnificent display"? I am afraid Mr Appleton that you are starting to develop the same delusional traits that our former, much loved, leader Steve Kean used to adopt to to such good effect. I don't know what it is about Blackburn Rovers and their managers developing flights of fantasy. Perhaps it is training at a former looney bin that does it. Worrying times indeed. There are still thirty points up for grabs, so we could be very easily dragged into the bottom three if we don't start winning some games. It's hard to judge how many points should keep us up, because it's very tight below us. last season, Pompey went down with 40, whereas Leicester went down with 52 in 07/08 I think we need to win at least another 3 to be sure, and on recent performances, that's a tall order.

Absolutely the wrong words to describe an inept performance by the Rovers,,magnificent it was not, and Appletons negativity is all too evident,,l would put gary bowyer in for the rest of the season and put batfink in charge of the reserves,and at the end of the season the guy with the most points gets to keep his job,,,

When will the penny drop with the BRFC faithful. We have possibly the worst manager in the league and despite all the player slagging off going on, we have one of the best team sheets in the division.

Once again we play defensive longball against a team who are physically stronger than us. It took Appleton 80 mins to change the game and we finally started to look like we might be able to muster a shot on target.

This is the best chance of winning the FA cup we will have in a LONG time and I can't help but feel if we only had a bit of passion, desire and tactical nouse, there would be hope. Unfortunately i've watched many sides in this competition give bigger clubs a better game than Rovers are capable.

Anything less than progression to the semis and a win over Burnley should see the end of "10 men back" Appleton.

That game was so boring and inept. I couldnt believe how badly prepared and organised the players looked from the off. What does Appleton do before the games? It's like he just shuffles a pack of cards to decide who's playing and what the game plan is. The team he ended up with was better than the one he started with but that wasnt through his forethought more a consequence of injuries. Those saying that this is a chance to win a cup, I have to ask what you are taking? I dont understand how any rational minded person can make a connection with that tripe we are watching and an FA Cup!!

Hardly magnificent. We hung on, we didn't take the game to them, we just took it as it came and hoofed a long ball every now and then. We were completely out of ideas and looked like a team who were playing for the replay.

At half time it was clear that we were outnumbered in midfield and even still, Millwall looked useless. Half time should have been the turning point. A change of tactics could have easily turned that game on it's head. I would expect an 'up and coming' manager like Appleton to spot something like that.

I'm really going off Appleton now, his inexperience is showing and he is like watching paint dry on the touch line. There's no passion or grit in him. I sincerely hope you understand the importance of sunday, the crowd will come down on you like a tonne of bricks if we show the same dire performance against the filthy Dingles.

Also, who are these injuries? Granted some carried niggles but be under no illusions this team is arguably the strongest we've put out all season.

i am sorry mr appleton magnificent display - you are mad - it was awful - you think yourself lucky you played such a bloody bad side as millwall. i thought he was supposed to be honest. players will think that their displays were satisfactory. still having sunk as low as we have , we have to put with these "magnificent displays." god help us.

I agree 100% although I would have given King 1 and Dunn who you don't mention 7 for at least making something happen in midfield.

the guy is coming back from a serious injury, in the past such an injury ended careers of players, plus it was his debut game hasnt had match time, given time he can develop partnership and understanding, on top of that he needs match fitness to get up to speed and strength, given the limited service, no one can really point a finger at the strikers, best's situation must be seen in view in the long term as preparation for next season,

there are no quick fixes and shortcut in this game, to produce sustainable success, improvement happens in small increments,steady and slow, it has taken the likes of cardiff years to develop the consistency at this level, to get to where there are, they have gotten used how to play teams through experience of playing these teams again and again

Game Rover, I agree what you say re Dunn, and I'm not a Dunny fan, to old to slow and injury prone but he did make a difference which proves my point even more! The reason I didn't include him was the same as why I didn't include any of the subs.

As for Passing Football's coments re "the guy" I take it that is a reference to Best is it? If it is, I new people would say he needs time, but he dosen't, he realy dosen't. Best is awful, shocking, allways has been always will be. He got a very lucky break in Pardew who thought he saw pottential in him when he was at Saints. Pardew eventually took him to Newcastle were he failed again, just check his career out on Wikapedeia. Granted he has been injured, but 26 goals in 7 years for a centre forward, is this the future for the Rovers.

Trust me Best is awful and he has a well bad attitude to go with it as well hence why clubs move him on all the time.

the comments may have been made based on the number of unfit players that had started the game, plus the injuries to henley and orr where far from ideal, reduced an attacking option, there was a limit to changes that could have been made in the second half, they simply cut their loses and saw the game out, start again stronger position for the replay at ewood, if best and king had picked up an injury, he kept a sub spare just in case, instead of finishing the match with 10 men

here here,a straight swap with appy would be fine by me,

passing football, your not Appelton are you? you appear to be the only one on here defending everything. Maybe you could explain or justify why since Appelton took over we have failed to win in our last 5 games, why we went 0-3 down at home to a team at the bottom of the league last week and why as everyone has written on here we cannot string three passes together. Add in the long ball, the fact that our best players week in week out are defenders, surly this tells you something. Rovers are embarrasing at the moment and yes I want them to be great again, but we never will be if we defend like you are or accept the crap thats coming out of Ewood at this present time.

one thing going best has played at this level before, injuries may have prevents him improving his scoring record, he is in some ways similar to ckr in the way they may not be prolific but make openings for other players and improves their goal tallys,

dont think he'll start in the next match, might sit out the first half, cant be risking him, other strikers should be getting some games, should be using all our attaacking resources, dont have put all the burden on jordan rhodes, other teams put their better players out for a game, especially when there are 2 or three games in a week just to aviod them being jaded and retain their freshness in front of goall, the ideal thing in the next game is to score first, get in front and get it done as quick as possible, aviod getting involved in a long drawn out match, with extra time etc

i aint ardent supporter of appleton or his tactics, like to see rovers be more bit more adventurous, demanding playertake much more care with their passes, nobody likes to see this untidy fragmented brand of football, dont deny rovers have to be tight at the back, shouldnt play in such a way which is not detrimental to our attacking play, and bore everyone, i was pleased when dunn came on, improve our play, appleton should have kept our flair players, player like rochina can be frustrating, but is a good impact player could have done a job as a sub, he could have told him he cant go, until hed found a replacement first, but appleton will have the excuse that the squad needs to be overhauled anyway and he has to make do with what he has, he may have plans to bring in new players, we just have to wait and see

You must be joking. Luck kept Rovers in the game, luck and the fact Millwall are a very poor side. It's a very sad state when that performance by **** is hailed as keeping you in the game. Just watched Burnley and although loosing to a very good Hull side, if we play like we have been doing of late, I'm sorry to say, I can see Rovers getting thumped. Let's just hope are managment realise this and change our tactics. Sort it out Appelton!

That's the problem, we're forced into being happy with mediocrity. Watch Dann play, and not through rosé tinted specs. Compare him to central defenders in the Championship and don't follow the 7s and 8s the LET gives him every week.
Don't get me wrong he puts more in than most of them but just because he has decided to pull his socks up the last few games doesn't mean he wasn't appalling all thought the beginning of the season and really not that good on Sunday.

the reason in my opinion why we are so 's.....' in the championship is we don't have the midfield to cope with championship pressures.

Championship football is a different ball game and actually in my opinion prem. players don't necessarily make good championship players.

We need a complete midfield.
x 3 /4 players
The only way we can stand up and be counted in the championship is if we have the right physically strong players.
strong, physical, box to box ..etc..
but also we need hard as nails humans,
we need fighting dogs of war,
we need lion heart warriors,
we need the Battys,
we need snarling Sounesses
we need bad boys who will rip chunks out of opposition and shred them to bits.

we need the championship to be scared of BRFC because at the moment everyone knows how soft BRFC are especially in the midfield areas.

which impacts greatly on the poor defense giving them extra pressure making them look even worse
and the strikers who get few if any chances because of no link up play from midfield.

Unfortunately he's beginning to sound more like Kean by the minute. That was an appalling performance. We barely managed to string 3 passes together until Dunn came on.Hoofing down the middle hoping for a lucky flick on hardly constitutes penetrative attacking play. Whatever happened to playing it on the deck and crossing from the wings?

Only one problem, the current team cannot string more than two passes together. Stick with the long ball!

I rest my case, another truly awful display against a very poor side and at home as well. This is the worst I have ever seen a Rovers team and the manager for me is clueless. It's just the same old yet again. Inexperienced managment (cheap options) and very poor footbaallers masqurading as though they care, get rid of the lot Prt from maybe one or two thats what I say and start again, and the first one that needs to go is Best, what another quality performance by him eh, didn't even know he was on the pitch. Now Burnley to look forward to and they will batter us for sure the way we set up. I know Charlie Austn very well and he will bully are back four, I just cannot beleive this is happening to my club!
