CHARLIE Austin's early opener was cancelled out by Barnsley substitute Tomasz Cywka, to leave the Clarets without a home win in four games.
Burnley went ahead in the ninth minute when Austin converted Danny Lafferty's left wing cross for his 26th goal of the season.
But the Clarets failed to capitalise on their early advantage.
Referee Carl Boyeson played his part, by failing to spot a foul by ex-Claret Stephen Foster on Martin Paterson, who was through on goal with the defender already on a booking.
Austin was later fouled by Martin Cranie in the box, but Boyeson missed the incident and the Clarets missed out on a clear penalty.
Although Barnsley applied late pressure, Burnley looked as though they might have done enough to end a disappointing home run.
But Cywka picked up the ball on the edge of the box from David Perkins, and picked out the top right corner to earn a point for the Tykes.
Burnley now have just two points from a possible 12 at Turf Moor, and have scored only twice in those four games.
