BLACKBURN Rovers' play-off hopes were dealt a blow this afternoon in a disappointing goalless draw at home to Leeds United.
The draw leaves Rovers still seven points adrift of the top six with Middlesbrough to play later in the evening against Millwall.
Rovers struggled to impose themselves as an attacking force in the opening 45 minutes, with Leeds enjoying the majority of the possession.
The visitors were unable to make the most of the ball though as they often lacked the final product to punish a sloppy Rovers display.
Tom Lees had a close range shot saved by goalkeeper Jake Kean, while Grant Hanley blocked from Ross McCormack.
At the other end, Colin Kazim-Richards went closest for the hosts with a shot from 18 yards that was parried away by Paddy Kenny.
Leeds should have been ahead soon after the restart after Steve Morison played Ross McCormack through on goal down the left.
The Leeds' midfielder never looked comfortable though and, after hesitating, he blasted well wide of Kean's goal.
Rovers' cause wasn't helped on 54 when Kazim-Richards limped out of the action with what looked like an ankle injury, to be replaced by Morten Gamst Pedersen.
The hosts were almost ahead against the run of play 61 when Murphy capitalised on hesitancy in the Leeds defence to play Rhodes through but, with just Kenny to beat, he curled wide from 18 yards.
Rhodes went close with a shot from 18 yards on 86, after a neat turn, but Rovers did little to suggest they could win the game.

Absolutely pathetic, one shot against Hull and just the same at home! It's no good Appleton whingeing about the lack of midfielders. He is the goon who got rid of Formica, Rochina and Vucevij. DJCampbell and Lee Williamson have certainly made their marks in their place. Kean back!

So! MA has finally got the defence working. Unfortunately the attack is now conspicuous by its absence. Just when you think it's safe to go back they let themselves and the fans down. A hard working performance it may have been but that is not good enough. I am sure the players are disappointed but it is clear that the season is heading towards a disappointing finish. We know that what has gone before was horrendous but we were just getting used to seeing a vast improvement in terms of game play. It is disappointing not to win at home. But! Then again looking on the bright side another clean sheet. Perhaps if MA can bolster the side before the next game we can still get to the playoffs. At least Brighton won.

rhodes going through a mini drought with no goals in 4 games, our creative play has stalled, it is clear lowe will never score you goals (except and og) and murphy's too slow, you need new ideas in the middle there, all these games must be taking their toll, with lowe and murphy raking up the yellow cards a suspension is not very far away, the centre will bew be even barer

Easy to see why Appleton had so many draws with Blackpool, if it wasn't for the poaching skills of Rhodes we would have drawn more.
Dire to watch today again, apart from Bristol City we have been outplayed by every team that comes to Ewood.
This league was there for the taking, terrible decisions by the owners have cost us badly, thanks Venkys.

appleton is very hesitant to change things round when it is clear things are clearly not working out, bringing on a different player can make an impact as well as put defenders off, only sub today was the one that was forced on him MGP coming on for CKR, if you get good balls into the fowards is does matter if you have a physical player who can hold it up or not, you only need a yard or two of space to shoot once you are in the box

the year fulham went up with us they won their first 11 games in a row, exactly the number of games rovers have won after 33 games, their run ironically ended by an appleton goal straight from a corner, fulham proved it is possible to play good football as well as being tight, they didnt have any star names except louis saha, dull performances dont inspire the fans, i respect rovers are doing it the by being hard to beat first , so its going to take time

Mixed afternoon for me. On the one hand I' m relieved that MA isn't a long ball % merchant , which I feared after the last home games. In the main we did try and play. The problem is we haven't got a dominant CM player., Or enough pace on the flanks.Murphy just can't make any room for himself when he's closed down, and Lowe can make room but has no nous. We should swap their legs around!
Pederson offers absolutely nothing and does just hoof it, or flick it on hopefully. Those who think he offers any kind of alternative in CM no nowt about football.
We need CKR up front with Rhodes, DJ and JR are not suited as a pair, J King on the left and a new player in CM and we could put a run together.
On the positive side Hanley and Dann are as good a pair of CH in the championship.
As MA has said we are very much a work in progress. Don' t despair we are on the right tracks, but we' ll prob fall short this season. Lets just look for progress and maybe a day out at wembley.

Now the pennies dropped that Bonlehs 3 weeks of glory being above Rovers is over, he's resorted to Roy Hodgsons sacking nearly 15 years ago. I thought you didn't like to mention the past glentoran?
By the way, if you hadn't noticed (which you have because you're obsessed with Rovers) it was Kean we didn't accept, not Big Sam or Hodgson. Maybe we should've tried to set Keans wife on fire like those ape creatures from turdville did with Jimmy thingy?

Another very poor home performance and once again central midfield was the main problem.
No creation, no drive, no service to the frontmen.
Rhodes again feeding off scraps and DJ Campbell offered absolutely nothing.
Whilst Appleton has talked alot of sense since he arrived he made a big error in his team selection at Hull last Tuesday and we can all now see that he is very, very negative.
If Appleton really believed that we had a chance of reaching the play-offs surely he would have used his substitutes and tried to win the game.
Campbell was awful yet Goodwillie & Gomez remained on the bench. Why?
No creation, no drive, no service to the frontmen.

Anyone still dreaming of promotion or even play-offs though are in cloud cuckoo land.
Write the season off. If we finish top 6 then great, lets enjoy the play off lottery but after the turmoil of this season I can't believe anyone expects much more.

Thought the game was very boring first half and enjoyed watching Neil Warnock attack the Ref and Linesman every time a decision didn't go his way. but was a decent game in 2nd period. Most teams seem to pass the ball quicker than us but the defence is very well marshalled and thought the young left back did well and we are defending as well as a unit as I have seen for a long time. I am glad we have a decent Manager and back room staff on board, but can't understand why he doesn't vary his attacking options more with his subs. The last few games has seen us loose the opportunity to catch the front six as it was always going to be too much to do after Hennings spell.The team doesn't seem good enough to mount a challenge this year. Good to see Bently back though.

Really disagree with ''Angry Fan from Accrington'' in his comments regarding Appleton he has come in and made us hard to beat and the signs are looking good. He has sorted out Hanley and Dann and John Keeley has really brought out the best in Kean. I agree we need to do more going forward but that will come in time when we get the pace of King and the quality of Best who is just as much as a presence as Kaz is but is a better finisher. My first Appleton game was Derby in the cup and the atmosphere was amazing the fans were unreal, the first time i have felt that since Hughes, the Hull game was strange but its the first time in over 2 years i didnt panic after a defeat as the club is in more than capable hands under Appleton. He has brought in his own staff and has real authority in the club something Berg never had. Just wanted to add the Burnley scum on here just after 5pm after they had lost, obsessed aint the word.

As bad a game as I have seen at Rovers for a long time. Leeds were if anything worse than us simply because they had nobody up front.

Days like this you wonder why do 'professional' players get paid so much and what do they do during the week? X-box?

How about a game with good, cleanly hit passes and not flicks with the outside of their one good foot which never come off.

Write it off as a bad day with good, solid performances from Hanley & Dann.

Last week we where frigging brilliant, we where all on cloud nine, two results later its sack Appleton!!!! Lets hold fire and accept we wont go up this season, i admit that our manager is to defensive, but a couple of months ago we where crying out for this, let things develope, be patient and see what happens, Dont forget we used to have Steve Kean!!!!

DJ was awful, no effort made at all and did not look interested. Why MA left him on the pitch I don't know, he seems reluctant to use subs after the Goodwillie fiasco. CM still a massive problem Lowe was useless with the ball Murphy just useless today. Only positive at the moment is Dann and Hanley are becoming a decent pairing at this level. Honestly can't see who could play in the middle, all our options look rubbish. Anyone any ideas ???????

I think the reason why so many are so disappointed is that as is the case with football fans, they jump between extremes. Things looked up a bit when Shebby the snake dropped out of the scene and Appleton came in with the common sense you'd expect from any normal person and fans got carried away with this FA cup thing and play off place. If any had looked at it logically, the only thing that's changed is Dann and Hanley have found some form and understanding which has steadied the goals against column. We've never looked that convincing and most games could have lost a lead if the opposition had been better shots. We are nowhere near a promotion winning outfit. Even if we slipped in that last place, we wouldnt win a two leg against those up there or a final tie. A lot of damage was done during the Kean era. Good players lost and replaced by mediocre or too old. Appleton is an ordinary manager and nothing more. Some realism is needed rather than a reaction to the cr#p we've had. I thought today was a frustrating game, boring from both sides, Leeds man marked very closely, Appletons tactics and formation were such that Leeds could defend easily. They knew the long ball would go up to Rhodes and they just had go cover him.That lad from City let the ball out each time he had it. He was nearer the centre circle than the touchline and still managed to let it run out. Murphy tries but is past it, Pedersen isnt that same player but to be fair him and Murphy are used to playing in a decent midfield and not they are with Lowe and a-nother. Rhodes is wasted having to battle against defenders for long balls, DJ ineffective and not the right partner for Rhodes, missed Martin today, desperate for a better midfielder. If Venkys had a brain cell to share they'd have sacked Kean at the least when we were saved against Wolves and at the latest when we were relegated. They'd have got a proper manager in, let him build his squad at summer then really give it a go from the first game of the season. They have basically pratted around for 6 months of a 9 month season and how anybody expects a fairly inexperienced manager to win promotion in 3 months with this current squad is a mystery.I dont mind Appleton. I can listen to him without my stomach knotting as it did with that lying cretin Kean however, he doesnt make me that optimistic either. He has to prove himself like the players have. We need to give him time to sort things out. We will soon know if he hasnt the ability or means to.

We lack pace, for starters.
The defence does quite well, they're organised and work reasonably ok, The midfield 4 compliments them but, we have no outlet to release pressure and put pressure on the opposition.
Still dysfunctional.
Hanley did well, Lowe tried to push forward more (thankfully). Don't knock Murphy for effort but this simply isn't his playground.
We had 2 quality strikers in Rhodes and DJ but these guys love it in and around the box, not having to make runs from the half-way line, it's not their game.
Decent back four, decent strikers. What's missing?

The defence does quite well, they're organised and work reasonably ok, The midfield 4 compliments them but, we have no outlet to release pressure and put pressure on the opposition.
Still dysfunctional.
Hanley did well, Lowe tried to push forward more (thankfully). Don't knock Murphy for effort but this simply isn't his playground.
We had 2 quality strikers in Rhodes and DJ but these guys love it in and around the box, not having to make runs from the half-way line, it's not their game.
Decent back four, decent strikers. What's missing?

the reality is that we have sold the family silver and there is no quick buscks to be made anymore from lucrative transfers....we'll get a bit of dosh for kean (if we opt to sell him) and maybe dann - but the cupboard is bare.

poor show by both teams today, i thought football was meant to be a form of entertainment not endurance.

+ve the team is fitter than previous and doesn't run out of batteries after 70 minutes and the inevitable happened
+ve dann and hanley are developing into a formidable partnership under appleton's management
+ve kean had his worst game in the sticks for us - but leeds still weren't able to make anything count
negatives
-ve campbell is so far off the pace, it seems obvious he hasn't played for coming on for 2 years, he has the first touch of a rapist (hopefully he can work on this - but he needs to start firing PDQ)
-ve what is murphy for? his game was summed up for me after 71 minutes when, under no pressure, he kicked a dreadful clearance randomly straight up in the air into touch
-ve maybe a bit too much to hope for, but i expected a bit more from bentley.....kept trying to spray hollywood balls across the field when a simple 10-15yd pass was what was needed.

i have to say that i thought danny murphy a bit of an embarassment today. everybody deserves a chance and i really rated the guy in hhis good days. but deary , deary me, i'm sorry but he should not have been on that pitch today
i don't know his circumstances,but he will pick up good wages in the reserves till he retires. he has to be written off as a player. we do not have a credible midfield. write off this year and put a reserve lad with legs in centre midfield.

He was nearer the centre circle than the touchline and still managed to let it run out. Murphy tries but is past it, Pedersen isnt that same player but to be fair him and Murphy are used to playing in a decent midfield and not they are with Lowe and a-nother. Rhodes is wasted having to battle against defenders for long balls, DJ ineffective and not the right partner for Rhodes, missed Martin today, desperate for a better midfielder. If Venkys had a brain cell to share they'd have sacked Kean at the least when we were saved against Wolves and at the latest when we were relegated. They'd have got a proper manager in, let him build his squad at summer then really give it a go from the first game of the season. They have basically pratted around for 6 months of a 9 month season and how anybody expects a fairly inexperienced manager to win promotion in 3 months with this current squad is a mystery.I dont mind Appleton. I can listen to him without my stomach knotting as it did with that lying cretin Kean however, he doesnt make me that optimistic either. He has to prove himself like the players have. We need to give him time to sort things out. We will soon know if he hasnt the ability or means to.

I will give you one for starters. Brian McDermots Reading went on a more or less unbeaten run last year because he had the guts and bravery to play all subs and go out to snatch a win in the last twenty odd minutes
Putting subs on and using all of them strategically when the oppositions concentration is going and they are getting tired reaped rewards by getting late winners and taking the three points instead of bottling it for just the one.
Appleton would not know what strategy to use if it hit him in the face.
Oh and by the way Moore his U18 West Brom sidekick coach is also meant to have the magic formula (as stated BY HIM recently) as to how teams get out of this division because he has experienced it on a number of occasions himself and knows you know.

1) Kean kicking was ver poor, but was steady
2) defence again solid apart from the lad from city, who had a disappointing game
3) murphy, enough said
4) kaz ineffective as a wide man , better linking up with rhoads
5) DJ, didn't know he was playing, very poor in possession
6) Rhoads, not one of his better games

The key point on the pitch for me is very simple we have virtually no midfield murphy is just not doing it and Lowe is ok at best and against today we didn't have a winger on the pitch (pederson sub) - its the most key area on the pitch and its our weakest!
I want to win every game just like everyone, buts lets be patient and give MA time. I agree the league was for the taking and i dont know why but it just doesn't seem to work that way like last time we went down it may take a couple of seasons. The best in fact the only thing we can do to help is get behind the team! Come on you Blues...............

If we had their midfield we would have scored 5 or 6, ditto if they had our strikers.
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous, neither of these sides are good enough to go up this season, anyone who thinks otherwise has less braincells than your average Burnley tree frog.
We don't have a midfield general, a Robbie Savage if you like, Lowe and Murphy do their best but they are not that type of player.
Rochina was great to watch in spells, scored the odd nice goal, but I can think of 6 or 6 goals against Rovers at Ewood this season that were down to him being greedy or a misplaced pass.

Desai wanted him to stay, just one of many non - decisions which have left us where we are. Venkys' (Desai's) decision to keep him on at least three occasions when he should have got the hook condemned us to certain relegation and zero chance of bouncing straight back.
Their (her) other decisions all of which, without exception, have been disastrous, are well documented.
On reflection, I suppose they (she) did "force" Kean out. Another of their (her)disastrous decisions - hiring Singh - did contribute to him resigning, despite it not being what they (she) wanted.
Where is that heejut, by the way? It seems even they themselves have effectively admitted his appoinment was an embarrassing mistake. That said, his disappearance did come around the time they hauled their sorry @$$e$ over here to grace us with their presence (only once mind; check the date of the next blue moon for the next royal visit).
I'd like to bet they had to be told to do both by the PR company they hired; they couldn't even make those glaringly obvious "decisions" themselves.

Nice to see a It of realism returniNg to these columns about Michael Appleton following the Happy Clappers getting carried away these last few weeks. I was very disappointed by Appleton's appointment, but I must say that he is doing a good job. He has transformed the defence and the fitness in short order and deserves much credit for this. To go to Arsenal and keep a clean sheet was a considerable achievement and doubly so when you consider that Rovers lack any sort of midfield worthy of the description. The lack of midfield is not Appleton's fault, but his ability to address it will determine his managerial tenure in the fullness of time. Appleton continues to show leadership and a clear head in his public statements in both defeat and victory. If Rovers are to get the best out of Appleton then the fans must have reasonable expectations.

Promotion even by the playoff is a long way away, we are just not ready to compete at the moment. Our best bet for this season is the FA Cup and a possible semi-final spot. Hopefully a successful campaign for promotion next season once MA has his own players in place ith some help from Venky's pockets!

Not great, 0-0 with a 'rival play-off hopeful'. I don't know why people are beginning to turn on MA already, not exactly an easy task to come into a club, stop the defensive rot and turn two defensive midfielders into box-to-box midfielders.
Look, where the midfield was concerned, MA had spoken to Hodgson to ask how he used Etuhu with Murphy in the centre. So Lowe would have been dropped to the bench to allow a central partnership of Etuhu and Murphy. Problem that's been is that the midfield isn't good enough. No manager can work with a team that has no midfield. QPR are doing exactly the same as us but they have a poor midfield so they can't get goals.
On the note of we'll be in financial crisis next year if we don't get promoted this season, no, we won't. The parachute payments are split into four years, with our first parachute payment used to buy Rhodes. We'll have to sell all the deadwood though and try our best to keep hold of our prized assets. I can see Olsson leaving as well as Dann/Hanley.
We're 7 points off of the play-offs with Watford, Leicester and Cardiff still to play away from home. Realistically speaking I think it's fair to say we won't go up this year, unless of course we can take 4 or more points from those 3 games.
MA is setting the foundations, something we didn't have before. We're building from a defensive base and that's the way to steady the ship and to get success. It's what Mourinho did at Chelsea, Redknapp at Tottenham etc. I know we're not of that calibre, but it's the philosophy and principles.

It should be quite Clear to every BRFC fan that we have a problem with our non existent midfield.
We have tried all season to play with players who are not up to the job.
Our problem is central midfield.
We need strong youngish determined midfield marvels...!!
Unfortunately these particular type of player are harder to find and lure to BRFC. People have more chances of finding gold on the streets of Blackburn.....!!!!

I suppose it depends on whether you were there or not, ok it was scrappy at times but "disappointing?
", well there were two half decent teams out there giving it everything and I actually enjoyed it and thought it was a fair result.
If we had their midfield we would have scored 5 or 6, ditto if they had our strikers.
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous, neither of these sides are good enough to go up this season, anyone who thinks otherwise has less braincells than your average Burnley tree frog.
We don't have a midfield general, a Robbie Savage if you like, Lowe and Murphy do their best but they are not that type of player.
Rochina was great to watch in spells, scored the odd nice goal, but I can think of 6 or 6 goals against Rovers at Ewood this season that were down to him being greedy or a misplaced pass.
The others mentioned are simply no better than the ones we have on the pitch, some didn't want to be here.
Not Appleton's fault, it will be his fault if we are in the same position at the same time next season.

What a difference a couple of games makes, out come the moaners and whingers and of course we get the dingles flairing up like a dose of syphillis. Let's take a reality check. In 2 years Kean and Singh destroyed our premiership squad and replaced quality with has beens and never going to make it players. Appleton has given a fair assessment of the situation in that the squad was totally unbalanced and we couldn't buy a clean sheet. Leeds wasn't pretty to watch but it was an honest point. There are no magic wands and quick fixes in football. It will take time to build a squad of the calibre we are used to. We didn't go up first season last time we were in the championship as it took Souness a summer in the transfer market to put together a squad that was the foundations for over a decade in the top flight. Appleton needs the same but he is also hampered with all the bad press of recent antics at Ewood with players questioning if they should come to Ewood or give us s wide berth. If the moaners and whingers want to judge Appleton so far just look at the posts on here. Pre Appleton there was a real worry about relegation and getting into a relegation battle, now no one even mentions the possibility. If you want the good times of the premiership back give the manager time to build hid squad and get behind the team. Let's face it, at least we weren't getting stuffed down in Brighton on Saturday. Got my ticket for Leicester, hope to see a good few there.

Just had a nasty shock. Quietly watching City and Chelsea on Sky. Half time came, went in kitchen to make a brew and heard Steve Kean's name mentioned . Hoping something nasty had happened to him, I rushed back and was amazed to see the wastrel being introduced as the match assessor. Anderson must have his greasy fingers all over Sky Sports.

Nice to see a It of realism returniNg to these columns about Michael Appleton following the Happy Clappers getting carried away these last few weeks. I was very disappointed by Appleton's appointment, but I must say that he is doing a good job. He has transformed the defence and the fitness in short order and deserves much credit for this. To go to Arsenal and keep a clean sheet was a considerable achievement and doubly so when you consider that Rovers lack any sort of midfield worthy of the description. The lack of midfield is not Appleton's fault, but his ability to address it will determine his managerial tenure in the fullness of time. Appleton continues to show leadership and a clear head in his public statements in both defeat and victory. If Rovers are to get the best out of Appleton then the fans must have reasonable expectations.
Of course, that brings us to the fly in the ointment, the Venkys and that master pi11ock The Global Adviser. I wonder if he has introduced himself to the new manager yet. Perhaps the LET could get off it's inert @rse and find out. We haven't heard much from Shabby recently. Has anyone sighted the hideous b@st@rd? He is certainly not attending to the "global" marketing side of his brief if my own experience is anything to go by. I telephoned Ewood Park from Switzerland in order to buy some tickets for the Arsenal game to find that the ticket line wouldn't take calls from abroad!!! It would greatly boost attendances at home games if Shabby was to be put in the stocks for 15 minutes before kick off so that fans could pelt him with detritus. Even I would return to Ewood Park for that.
Keep it up Mr. Appleton, you have made a good start with poor resources and a club in turmoil. You deserve encouragement.

I think the reason why so many are so disappointed is that as is the case with football fans, they jump between extremes. Things looked up a bit when Shebby the snake dropped out of the scene and Appleton came in with the common sense you'd expect from any normal person and fans got carried away with this FA cup thing and play off place. If any had looked at it logically, the only thing that's changed is Dann and Hanley have found some form and understanding which has steadied the goals against column. We've never looked that convincing and most games could have lost a lead if the opposition had been better shots. We are nowhere near a promotion winning outfit. Even if we slipped in that last place, we wouldnt win a two leg against those up there or a final tie. A lot of damage was done during the Kean era. Good players lost and replaced by mediocre or too old. Appleton is an ordinary manager and nothing more. Some realism is needed rather than a reaction to the cr#p we've had. I thought today was a frustrating game, boring from both sides, Leeds man marked very closely, Appletons tactics and formation were such that Leeds could defend easily. They knew the long ball would go up to Rhodes and they just had go cover him.That lad from City let the ball out each time he had it. He was nearer the centre circle than the touchline and still managed to let it run out. Murphy tries but is past it, Pedersen isnt that same player but to be fair him and Murphy are used to playing in a decent midfield and not they are with Lowe and a-nother. Rhodes is wasted having to battle against defenders for long balls, DJ ineffective and not the right partner for Rhodes, missed Martin today, desperate for a better midfielder. If Venkys had a brain cell to share they'd have sacked Kean at the least when we were saved against Wolves and at the latest when we were relegated. They'd have got a proper manager in, let him build his squad at summer then really give it a go from the first game of the season. They have basically pratted around for 6 months of a 9 month season and how anybody expects a fairly inexperienced manager to win promotion in 3 months with this current squad is a mystery.I dont mind Appleton. I can listen to him without my stomach knotting as it did with that lying cretin Kean however, he doesnt make me that optimistic either. He has to prove himself like the players have. We need to give him time to sort things out. We will soon know if he hasnt the ability or means to.

What English football rules applys to that a club has no devine right to be in Premiership .All English football rules says three clubs go down and three clubs go up.Blackburn were just not good enough to stay up last season and Venkys are just not ambitous .

", well there were two half decent teams out there giving it everything and I actually enjoyed it and thought it was a fair result.
If we had their midfield we would have scored 5 or 6, ditto if they had our strikers.
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous, neither of these sides are good enough to go up this season, anyone who thinks otherwise has less braincells than your average Burnley tree frog.
We don't have a midfield general, a Robbie Savage if you like, Lowe and Murphy do their best but they are not that type of player.
Rochina was great to watch in spells, scored the odd nice goal, but I can think of 6 or 6 goals against Rovers at Ewood this season that were down to him being greedy or a misplaced pass.
The others mentioned are simply no better than the ones we have on the pitch, some didn't want to be here.
Not Appleton's fault, it will be his fault if we are in the same position at the same time next season.
