Appleton ready for moves in the transfer market
7:49am Monday 21st January 2013 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
MICHAEL Appleton is planning a swift move into the transfer market after admitting his Blackburn Rovers side needs some “freshening up”.
The Rovers boss will be working hard attempting to bring fresh faces into Ewood, with a couple of departures also on the cards.
Appleton is also hopeful of adding to his staff behind the scenes, with fitness coach Chris Neville expected to arrive from Portsmouth, together with the likely appointment of former Pompey head of recruitment Luke Dowling.
Appleton will be hoping to add before tomorrow’s visit of Brighton but that is likely to depend on the success of freeing up the wage bill with Gael Givet’s move away finally happening.
Appleton said: “I would like to think we can move quickly in the transfer market. I think it will give everyone a lift, players, staff and supporters if there are two or three new faces in there.
“Luke is a scout and is someone I rate very, very highly. There are a couple of different avenues we will be looking to improve and we will keep you informed if anything changes.”
Rovers entertain Brighton in the Championship tomorrow night, looking to respond to Saturday’s dismal 2-1 defeat to Charlton.
“As a group of people we have to collectively pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and look forward to the challenge ahead, because it is certainly a big one,” said Appleton.
“They don’t get any tougher than Brighton because of the way we play. They are a very, very good footballing side, they probably pass the ball more than any other team in the division.
“They are difficult to play against but it is an opportunity. It is an opportunity for the players to make sure they respond in a positive manner and hopefully they will do.
“There is no time to shirk your responsibility, you are professional and you have to take the responsibility that comes with it.
“We have some good games coming up, a really really tough game against one of the best sides in the division in Brighton. So it is one the players have to take on board and look forward to.”
Appleton quit Blackpool after just two months in charge to become Rovers boss less than a fortnight ago.
And he admits the pressures are different at Ewood Park but believes the challenge has to be relished.
He said: “There is a difference in terms of the size of the clubs and the pressures that goes with it and the demands of the supporters, but surely that is a good thing?
“As a footballer, you don’t want to be known as mediocre, you don’t want to be involved in something that is average, you want to strive to better yourself all the time and you want to strive to be competitive.
“I am sure there are going to be times over the coming weeks and months where we really enjoy what we are seeing and doing.
“It is going to take a lot of turning around, you can see that, but I think there are enough players in the dressing room who have what we need and, with new fresh faces, change of personnel in certain areas of the pitch.”

Givet - I used to like his enthusiasm and commitment but after his 2 fall outs with Kean and his heart problems he dosn't seem to be the same player.
He has not been first choice for our last 3 managers - Berg, Bowyer & now Appleton and he must be on big wages. SELL
Dunn - Whilst he is a true Rovers fan, we must not let this overshadow the fact that he simply does not play enough games. He has made just 6 appearances out of 29 games this season. I have seen players recover from cruciate ligament injuries quicker that Dunn does from a calf strain. PAY UP HIS CONTRACT - RELEASE
Formica - he is not even a regular in the Championship. Kean/JA paid £3.5M for him. We would be lucky to get £1M for him. Neverthelss - SELL
Portuguese contingent - of the 6 players that Shebby signed from Portugal, only Fabio Nunes has showed that he has a chance of making it in England.
Most of the Portuguese players have not featured, especially since the colder weather started in November.
Gomes was a classy player and after a bright start to the season he is certainly not justifying the huge wages he is on. SELL / RELEASE
Etuhu - unless Appleton can find a way for him to play along side Murphy (I believe that he has already spoken to Roy Hodgson about this) then he should also go. He is another on big wages and has not impressed.
SELL
Robinson - how does a 33 year old professional sportsman become so overweight. Answer - lack of commitment. SELL
Olsson - over-rated as a full back. In my opinion, his best position is left side of midfield. If we can get over £4M for him - SELL
Dann - has certainly been a big disappointment since his arrival for around £6M. He makes too many mistakes. If we can get over £4M I would SELL.
Slew - I understand that he is now back at the club but he has hardly featured in the first team squad. Bought by Kean as one for the future! SELL
I am sure that I have missed quite a few out, but it shows the size of the task that Appleton now has.
Good luck. You are going to need it.

The last two managers have had a succession of mediocre mercenaries foisted upon them by self serving agents and advisors. It will be far more difficult to get rid of them and whilst I would prefer to see them selling pies or clearing snow from the terraces we must accept that their greatest contribution will be in the warmth of their central Manchester penthouses and away from any genuine players who might actually WANT to play for the club.
While this is happening however he needs to find a brand new back four and If that means bringing in his scout from Portsmouth so be it. I will be happy to take him down to Witton Park where he will readily find four improvements.
Personally, I still maintain that Appleton is not the right man for the job and it is ironic that Blackpool could well use the wedge of compensation we paid them to secure a quality manager like Nigel Adkins.
The rushed appointment of Appleton was nothing more than point scoring between The Idiot Shaw and Shebby The Snake, neither of whom are contributing anything positive at Ewood.

However i'm glad that we finally have someone who's realised what he has to work with. He has inherited some good players to work with, I just believe, as was with Chelsea, that the old heads are unsettling the dressing room. Of course, because of the sheer confusion caused by superiors aka Shebby.
I still believe if they can get Kazim-Richards and Vuckevic to full fitness, back to near their best, we definitely have a chance. When those two have a good day, they are top top players.
I think you'll find we'll have a couple of defenders coming in soon! I really do hope that maybe, just maybe, the corner may start to turn sooner rather than later.

Can someone tell me how CKR goes from a man possessed and fully committed against Wolves to someone who appeared to lack any interest whatsoever especially in the first half. It seemed to me like he and the rest of the players had decided they were going to show the club they did not welcome the change in manager....this is totally unacceptable they are all paid excellent wages and the poor sods that turned up in poor weather to sit in the stands (including me) had to suffer what can only be described as a pathetic display. It makes my blood boil these really are a set of overpaid prima donnas and yes I will be there tomorrow but am expecting a lot more committment if not quality from them. We can only hope!!

It sounds like Venky's are allowing us to have a normal set up again controlled by the Manager of which is a major change. We have got to give Venky's a chance now as they have listened to Derek Shaw and they hope MA will do a job for them, BRAG give them a break and stop supporting Shebby Singh. As for the Venky's they got exactly what they deserved, turning up in a fleet of Rolls and rubbing our noses in the dirt - after the way we have been treat you dont have to be clairvoyant to understand that protests were on the cards - only two visits to Ewood by Mrs D's & Co and on both occasions left early not bothering to watch the crap served up by overated, overpaid so called professional footballers - no I didnt attend and wont whilst these idiots are in charge - I listened to Radio Lancs Commentary and felt sorry for those who had paid their hard earned cash to watch such a miserable performance by these prima dona' s who like the Owners/Directors of the Club treat the fans like idiots!!!
To say the Owners, Shaw, Agnew & Singh have ambition is a bloody joke - if we are so ambitious why have we gone for an unknown Manager and back room staff from a bankrupt Portsmouth who if were any good would have been snapped up by other clubs putting some money into the clubs coffers - no we have no real ambition we are just told that and when in the market place to buy we always go for second rate people - well they all deserve one another - unfortunately we have a set of losers running the club and they all deserve one another - OUT WITH THE LOT OF THEM INCLUDING COAR AND HENDRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first provincial team to win the Association Cup, in 1883, beating the Old Etonians 2 - 1, after an extra half hour, Mr. T. Hacking, who kept goal for them in that celebrated contest, again donned the jersey at Ewood Park in March, 1892, giving an exhibition that was a revelation to those who had not previously seen him in action.
At one time football partisans whose real zeal outran their discretion were in the habit of relieving their feelings bu pelting opponents with stones and mud. It was great sport while it lasted, though those foolish enough to indulge in it had scant regard for the trouble it might cause. For example, when Burnley were here in December, 1892, they complained of the liveliness of their journey to the railway station. They had lost an exciting match by 2-0. In the last few minutes the referee had found it necessary to order a player on each side to leave the field. Rightly or wrongly, a section of the crowd believed that the visitors were to blame for what had happened. As a sequel, Burnley alleged that they were bombarded with missiles as they drove in a wagonette along Bolton Road. Jack Hillman, their goalkeeper was reported to have been struck in the face by a stone, and the players generally were said to have had narrow escapes from injury.
When the matter was investigated by a commission of the Football Association the Rovers club put in affidavits to the effect that there was no stone-throwing within at least 200 yards of Ewood Park, and as far as they knew nothing of the kind took place at that distance. The club were honorably acquitted, the commission dismissing the appeal and holding that no blame attached to the Rovers committee. They suggested, however, that it would have been more prudent if protection had been provided for the Burnley team until they reached the town. As the complainants had asked not for a penalty, but for a ruling on the subject, they were equally satisfied with the decision.

Whilst not condoning the actions of fans who threw snowballs at the Venky's it is fully understandable. Let us hope that they realise they are on a hiding to nothing. They cannot get the majority of fans on side whatever they do. The only logical conclusion for the fiasco that is BRFC is to admit defeat, something they are now used to and put the club up for sale now, in the hope somebody will emerge to save the club. Not hopeful but unless they try things will only get worse.
If you think baracking women and children with disgusting language is fine then your no better than the ones who did it. I hope the police are involved, they must be able to charge them all with public order offences.
That would please me greatly.

Classless supporters pelting the owners with snowballs.. Venky's are keeping you afloat, they have taken you on when no one else wanted you and the Walker Trust wanted shut asap, they have taken on your debt, invested £8M in a single player, manage a large wage bill, and have to put up with the worst set of supporters in the country demanding the sacking of anyone and everyone on a daily basis. If Venky's were to pull out, which wealthy investor is waiting in the wings ready to take on the shambles that is Blackburn Rovers? What is the point of Amine Linganzi? Robbie Cotton? David Dunn (always injured)? Edinho junior? ? Paolo Jorge? David Goodwillie? Jordan Slew? Markus Olsson? Diogo Rosado? If they are not playing (even for the reserves in some cases) what is the reason for retaining them.
Yes, youngsters like Tim Payne,Hugo Fernandez,Ryan Edwards etc do need to be retained and developed for the future but getting rid of the above would release funds for some ready made replacements who could readily step up to the plate. I cannot believe there are not some Championship players not getting the playing time they want and even some Premier League players who would jump at the thought of playing first team football for Rovers. Even loanees( like Todd Kane) should be considered.
And I haven't even mentioned our first team. I think we all realise a number of them are either uncommitted, convenie
ntly injured or just plain not good enough. And all on wages that all us supporters would bust a gut to achieve.
Time to wield the axe Mr Appleton and clear the boards. We are going nowhere this season as it is so there is nothing to lose.

I am sure that I have missed quite a few out, but it shows the size of the task that Appleton now has.
Good luck. You are going to need it.
Murphy - lazy, slow, uninspiring (especially for a captain) doesn't lead by example, poor distribution, massive wages. A handful of acceptable at best performances in a rovers shirt.
Kazim Richards - trips over his bottom lip when asked to play wide rather than up front, arrogant, only chases down and puts effort in when he sees fit.
spends 90% of the game strutting around like he runs the place. Decent when he can be bothered but poor all day Saturday apart from 10 mins after half time.

Big job on for Appleton.
1) Marlon King - free transfer, he can play alongside Rhodes in home games. This would be until Leon Best comes back, and in case Best's injury re-occurs.
2) Graham Dorrans - No clue but transfer listed. Can play as a left midfielder or as a central midfielder. Better work rate and passing than current central midfielders.
3) Alberto Botia - Centre back for Sevilla. Fringe player for their first team, but is a better player than what we currently have. Played alongside Rochina for Barcelona B team.
4) Albert Adomah - £1m (approx.). Winger for Bristol City, should really be playing football in the Premier League, hence Swansea wanting him.
5) Younousse Sankhare - Midfielder for Valenciennes in Ligue 1 of France. Played twice this season and was sold by PSG as soon as money bags came in.
Just some suggestions, I just think it shows that there are players out there, you just have to look hard. Swansea and Newcastle have become masters at it (I know they are PL but you know what i'm saying).

Lowe- 2 or 3 cracking long balls and works hard but generally not gifted enough for a team which is supposed to be chasing promotion.
Big job on for Appleton.
However I did say that I was sure that I had missed a few players out.
In addition;-
Vukcevic missed a golden oportunity to stake a place in the team on Saturday. His he really up for the fight?
Rochina - lots of skill but is he improving enough? He was another who was awful on Saturday.
If Dunn is isn't even injured as one poster has mentioned today - what the hell is going on?
Why are we still paying him around £30K per week. His contract expires in June 2013.
Finally - I am still waiting for 1952Rover to let me know Shebby's new email address.
Amazingly 1952Rover can decline meetings with Shebby whilst the rest of us cannot communicate with him.

If Venky's were to pull out, which wealthy investor is waiting in the wings ready to take on the shambles that is Blackburn Rovers? You may hate the Venky's but you're also completely dependent upon them.

Hope you are right Mr Appleton as that will be the first time anybody can say that in the 2 years existance of Venkys Blackburn Rovers.
The major problem I see for the club is if you get rid of the useless squad of players what standard of player will be attracted to join this awful Circus the club as become. I have a feeling the replacement players will be no different or better to ones currently employed (a depressing thought!!!).
In my opinion that is the sad state of affairs 2 years of clueless and inept ownership by the chicken farmers as brought our once wonderful club down too

Lowe- 2 or 3 cracking long balls and works hard but generally not gifted enough for a team which is supposed to be chasing promotion.
Big job on for Appleton.

Instead of pathetically constantly blaming your long suffering fellow supporters why don't you (just for once) blame the people who are actually to blame - THE OWNERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - if they stoped running the club into the ground and stoped treating the supporters like dirt then supporters wouldnt do what human beings do in that situation - which is complain and moan.
The problem is that a lot of those moaning can't offer a constructive alternative - other than moaning, getting on the players backs etc A good solution would be Venky's giving a stake of the club to the Trust - a set up a bit like Swansea. The Trust would never be able to afford to run the club in prem or championship under curent models. My suggestions were just examples of players in the positions which we lack the required quality and graft.
Undoubtedly Appleton has inherited a top finisher in Rhodes, how he has scored the amount he has scored with the quality of support is beyond me. He basically scores the one chance he gets per game.
I still think we need to sign two central midfielders, a centre back, a left back and a winger. Even an extra striker aka Marlon King would do no harm. The likely hood of this happening however, is very slim.

With regard to Dunn, I believe when Shebby said on radio that he was injured, an anonymous person rang in to say that wasnt true (probably Dunn or his granddad). I also saw Salgado on twitter talking about his situation with contracts at Rovers and about Robinson so could be both Dunn and Robinson are in the situation Salgado, Nelsen, Roberts were in. If that's true it means nothing has changed. Some on here say Dunny is past it now but how do we know? He hasnt been allowed to play and I cant truly say he is worse than the dross we have in that midfield at the moment and at least he wants Rovers to do well.
Is Dunn injured or can he not play due to contractual issues?
Either way the situation needs resolving asap.
He is on very high wages until June 2013 - for what?
Perhaps Andy Cryer can find out for us?
Personally, as a Rovers' fan - I would play for the club for free.

Researching our history, and handed this on Saturday by a long time fellow Rover I put forth this extract for your eye's only:

!!!!!!
The Venkys should surely realize that the fans are sick to death of their promises/lies and should put the club up for sale - they and Messrs Shaw Agnew Singh Hendry are not wanted at Ewood - we want Owners/Directors with footballing ability/credibility and a 'true ambition' to take the club forward instead of second rate signings/appointment
s thus promising nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!
And yes the fans every right to demonstrate their feelings - the Venkys knew exactly what to expect upon their arrival at Ewood in their Rolls fleet - and should have had more sense than to put a child through such an experience - more fool them.

Lowe- 2 or 3 cracking long balls and works hard but generally not gifted enough for a team which is supposed to be chasing promotion.
Big job on for Appleton.
I doubt our new PR gurus would approve. Then again, after Saturday's PR own goal, they probably would.
Titus Bramble is played by Sunderland, he is arguably worse!

The teams that arrive at Ewood with average records end up looking a good side. Actually it is Rovers being a poor side.
Anyway, if things do not change by May I will not be buying another season ticket.
The owners/directors havemade yet another bad decison. I am not making any judgement upon Mr Appleton, but I cannot understand why Gary Bowyer was not offered the job. Sheer stupidity.
To the idiots who chanted abuse at the owners upon their arrival, I consider that it is the height of rudeness to behave like that when these people had presumbly travelled a long way to Lancashire. At least they made the effort. Whatever you think of their efforts, I am sorry to have to say that these chanting idiots and their behaviour made me ashamed to be English. If you watch the football league show they have film of it. I had entered the ground a few minutes before Venkys arrived and walked by the directors entrance. I woud say there were not more than 50 people congregated there at that point. Don't know how many arrived afterwards, but from where I was sat in the Riverside stand I cant sa I heard that much chanting inside the ground.
Anyway, I do not think such behaviour is a picture that the club should present to the outside world.

It's Monday, let's have a demonstration, never mind all that turning up and supporting nonsense,i'm gonna boycott this 3rd round cup tie even though i was'nt going anyway, but i'll turn up on Saturday cos we've got Everton at home.
Demonstrating and not going to games and garlic bread-it's the way future

Business people will sell to who exactly?
some deluded fan trust with Rhodes weekly wage as their budget, or some property or retail developer who can offer them the millions they'd be asking for in your asset stripping scenario?
You know, business people as they are.

You've only just crawled out of the woodwork since this small demonstration happened and a handful of people behaved badly. Some could say To guy is justified is saying some are only interested in the 'trouble' aspect. You are an example of that. You're never made one positive contribution to the football discussion on here. You havent even posted on here. You seem only interested in the trouble. You have gone right over the top and seem to be hell bent on making it worse than it was. Your whining on about it is getting really boring. I'm beginning to wonder whether you arent one who is stoking the battle. Talk about the football and show us you even know what the badge is.
Jarrod Schulz Bearded Wonder wrote:I think some people on here, you included are getting so mixed up that you are finding it difficult to understand the point people make and you twist it in your own anger. No I didnt say it was ok, no I didnt say they were aliens. I suggested as a possibility that some people go where the trouble is. I saw some doing it on Saturday so dont think it is that unbelievable. What I was referring to about things not adding up was the organisation for Venkys arrival which I find completely baffling and wonder why Blackburn Rovers didnt care enough to protect them from it. They have taken all sorts of extreme measures to stop fans protesting in the last 2 years. Frisking, drowning out chants with loud music, confiscating banners not only at Ewood but at away grounds. I cant tolerate people like you. You accuse others of something you are guilty of. Insulting, attacking and thinking you are right.
To.guy wrote:What a crock, so some people who have no affiliation with the club turned up to cause trounle to make us look bad.
Jarrod Schulz Bearded Wonder wrote:How many of those fans do you think there were? Have you considered that some of them might not even have been Rovers fans in the true sense e.g. they turned up for the trouble and went away without even going into the game. Have you wondered why Blackburn Rovers didn't anticipate trouble given that they allegedly advised Steve Kean to have 24/7 protection? Why then did they think it appropriate to allow 'fans' to gather in such close proximity to where the cars were pulling up and unloading when they could so easily and with common sense have blocked off that section for a short time? Did those organisers at the club not care enough? Had I been in charge, there is no way I would have had them unloading cars so close to a gathering crowd. It was senseless. They knew there wouldnt be a welcoming party. Who is in charge there now for safety and security? Flippin heck, they had more security measures at the ground last season when they were frisking us all for banners and chickens. I dont advocate aggression, abuse or anything although I can understand why fans feel so angry with Venkys, I wouldnt and dont voice that but you have to think outside the box on this one because some things dont add up.
A Darener wrote:The fans that had chamted disgusting slogas at their offspring and then pelted them with snowballs you mean.
There is now no way back for the Venky's. they must realise after Saturday that they are not wanted. But to leave after 65 minutes was just to stick two fingers up to the fans. They are treating the fans with such disdain that even the lowest caste in India would not put up with them.
Grow up lad.
My goodness, what next Alien abduction. One conspiracy to far for me. It was Rovers fans making us look like a bunch of neanderthals.
But its okay isn't it because instead of ousting these mongs we will say they don't belong to us, they came from planet mongo and now they've gone back home.

Well lets start with clearing out the deadwood at the club and make way for new recruits and our own youngsters.

Still don't understand why everyone gets on Dann's back when hes playing alongside a young scottish lad who's not upto scratch. In fact i'd go as far as to say Dann is one of the best players we have, the rest of the squad makes him look worse. If you put Dann into a good team, he'd thrive.

Well some freshening up is definitely required. May I suggest a team bonding race evening with the chivalrous Colin Hendry down the pub?
That'd get the boys refreshed. Drinking 12 pints with a wife beating, pension stealing, deadbeat, alcoholic whose only talent is for hitting people, is just what the club requires in the middle of a relegation dogfight.
