Appleton: Owners' ambition convinced me to take Blackburn Rovers job
2:35pm Thursday 17th January 2013 in Football
MICHAEL Appleton has revealed that he decided to become Blackburn Rovers’ new boss because of the owners’ ambitions for the club.
Appleton has been unveiled as Rovers’ new manager at a press conference at Ewood Park this afternoon, after quitting Blackpool to take the job.
The 37-year-old had been in charge at Bloomfield Road for only two months but was persuaded to join Rovers because he believes Venky’s are ambitious to return to the Premier League as quickly as possible.
“Blackburn is a club that is steeped in history and there’s a lot of quality in the side,” Appleton said.
“It’s a club where the owners are very, very ambitious.
“They want to get back into the Premier League and I still believe there is an opportunity.
“This is an opportunity to work at a club that I believe is a Premier League club.
“I spoke to the owners and they convinced me about their ambition.”
Appleton confirmed the appointment of John Keeley, who he worked alongside at Portsmouth, as Rovers’ new goalkeeping coach.
He revealed that he was keen for Gary Bowyer to remain with the first-team coaching set-up, but said that Rovers' recent caretaker boss has decided to return to his job working with the reserves and youth players.
Appleton is also aiming to add to the squad before the closure of the transfer window and said he would be happy to work with global adviser Shebby Singh.
“What was important was I have 100 per cent say on the football side of things and I’m happy they would give me full backing about that,” Appleton said.
“There are 20 games to go so let’s see where we are with five or six games left .
“We believe catching the play-off group is still doable but I’m sure many other clubs view it the same way.”

He said that having spoken to 'Derek and Paul' (no mention of Singh what so ever) he felt that this was the right move for him - to come to such an historic Club with owners that have ambition was an opportunity he could not turn down (no mention of him nearly doubling his wages as Oyston said) !!!!!!
Yes Messrs Shaw Agnew Singh and the Venkys certainly have ambition - just look where we stand compared with 2 years ago and not a decent so called Premiership Player in the side nor a decent Director on the Board - asset stripped and gates having fallen by nearly two thirds on some match days.
He also said he has never shrugged a challenge - not what the people at Blackpool will say - only time will tell but one things for certain he's joined the 'real' Circus!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but I wish him well.

However this "owners convinced me with their ambitions" - isnt that EXACTLY the same guff that Kean and Berg had to say.
Looks like Venkys will never learn - every manager coming in HAS to kiss their ar$e publicly in order to get the job.

Singh the midget sized but big mouthed nincompoop , he still thinks he is a football , man NO Singh your not , you played at an amateur level and was the token local for ESPN football show and most football educated people scorned and chuckled at your punditry comments, plenty examples of Singhs childlike football comments.
Singh is responsible for nearly all THE dross we have right now at the club , Singh was responsible for Kean`s extended tenure , Singh was responsible for the hiring of Steve Keans drinking pal Hendry , who was laughingly recruited as a "defensive coach" his quote of " I`m here to stop the goals leaking " now he works as the third assistant coach to reserve team manager Bowyer ,but with a first team managers salary.
Singh took it upon himself to appoint Berg after failing in bringing in other ex players Sherwood/McKinley ,Singh has a love affair with Rovers ex players, in the meantime Singh sacked some good men Black ,Minns and Brunskill why were they sacked and the dishonourable and incompetent Hendry kept ?
Anyway good luck M.A. if you gonna fail , fail by your own hand and not under the advice of a clown like Singh or his new best buddy the granny swindler.

there is only one way that an owner can be ambitious and that is by ploughing their resources in to a club, thats hasnt exctly happened yet.
If Appleton and Venkys want us to believe them that they are ambitious, prove it by appointing the best possible people to the club, we need more authority and a proper framework upstairs and to go with that we need them to back appleton with funds for players, its that simple and that is the only way they can realistically make the fans believe them at last!
Our team is a shadow of its former self and we need to build NOW for a shot at promotion next season. if we managed to get playoffs this time around well thats a bonus but IMO we can write off this season.

I dont think they lack ambition and their spending on Rhodes and Best in particular plus their doubling of salary for MA would support my view I believe?
Its also true that the division is weak, our squad is pretty good and we still retain in many respects a premier league infrastructure. We need to get some stability, support and balance into the situation and we as fans need to play a part in that, we cannot go on and on just cursing and swearing. Good luck to the team and to MA and let those who dont share those sentiments stay away-a football team is not just for the good times. When I first scrambled through the turnstiles on the riverside with my 1s-3d in my hand I sensed that and I live it still, Cmon Rovers!

As fans we have little option but too give MA and his team a fighting chance and hope that those numpties have got something right at last..... the law of averages says they cant get every decision wrong...
Yes C'mon Rovers ...... but I have not been this nervous since we went bottom of the 3rd division in the 70's.... and I didnt pay to get in then as we used to climb the wall at the corner of the Riverside and Darwen end ...... I still bear the marks where a coppers boot would meet me on the way down occasionally.

With such a strong though positive promise, he's going to :
a) endear himself to Blackburn fans. Well, at least those who are still willing to listen to (thus far) lovely, yet empty promises.
b) heap tremendous pressure on himself, since he certainly has to start having his team (over which he has FULL control) perform.
c) have Blackburn fans already screaming for his head at the very first loss his team suffers, since high expectations have been placed on him / Blackburn Rovers.
Erm... Not a very well thought out PR move / interview perhaps?

1. Selling all of our best players off, and freezing out the other top earners until they leave.
2. Buying mainly dross from obscure leagues and teams, who are on the whole as the term dross indicates not good enough.
3. Sacking an experienced manager and replacing them with a cone carrier who had no managerial experience.
4. Keeping the cone carrier manager on in the face of a mass fan revolt and unrest, and relegation to the lower division.
5. Sacking experienced Rovers board member executives who had the club running one of the tighest regimes in the Premier league and replacing them with cheap and/or incompetent alternatives, if at all.
6. Watching the club implode around them, they appoint a PR company.
Yes, that shows the Venkys ambition.
Just how to destroy a premier league club in 2 years.

The whole football world (apart from Lusorover and Roverspal) knows that Venkys are complete and utter to$$pots - so by making the new manager spout blatent rubbish about Venkys just makes the incoming manager stupid (although in Keans case he didnt need much help to make himself look stupid !!).

Outcome number 1.
Rovers supporters feel Venkys are detatched and do not understand the club - lets face it that has been a constant source of concern from day 1. Now Venkys start attending the games to start to address this concern -0 football club owners attending matches to watch their team.
PR and spin are totally different and spin should stay in the realms of politics. I struggle to see how you make this association? is it because there is a new series of Yes Prime Minister on Sky? To answer your question, the outcomes will be how Venkys alter their behaviour to develop a better relationship with us Rovers fans, not how to lie or twist things. Investing in Blackburn Rovers was purely an economics decision, based on marketing strategies. Venky's were then surprised (they were likely the only ones surprised) when Rovers got relegated, and they (now) realize that in the Championship, the Rovers are not that strong a marketing tool for their franchise as they had hoped / planned for.

Venkys business venture of using Rovers as a sales gimmick to raise their image has backfired disastrously.
And they simply haven't got the loot to make a go of even getting out of this div.
We have to pressure them all we can - very limited I know - to make a decent and responsible exit. They could at least open up a channel to Wayne Wild's outfit to see if that is at all a viable option.
Can't see any other buyer, the hot money is drying up and there are better bargains already in the Premiership, like Southampton, Norwich, West Brom and most of all Everton; and clubs more likely to eventually go up with a bigger potential fan base - the Sheffields, B'ham (who'll be goig for a song soon).
We're a long way down the queue for the Sheiks and Russian mafia.
By the by, so pleased to see Pep G signing on for Bayern, a club largely owned by its fans with a fabulous board of former players, Beckenbauer, Rumminige, etc. and not in hock to the oil boys.

A) You ASSUME the photo was supplied, as no-where is there any indication that a photo was supplied by any party to make her look presentable. It could have just as well been the PR company choosing a shot from any number of scenarios. You just prefer to add this little notion to your little fantasy.
B) Why have chosen several days.. Why? Are they accountable to your good self when making that decision or is their another sinister theory in your book of "how not to be a fan"?
C) Where have they hidden Mr Singh?.. Given the enormous amount of negative publicity Mr Singh created with his nervous chuckling" you knows" and apparent plans to install a coach no-one wanted and the subsequent visit from Shagnew to India which appears to have derailed his plans, where do you think he is?? Guess licking his wounds somewhere, but please do enlighten us with another scintillating theory of wicked dealings... Maybe he's had a Face off style makeover and is actually Appleton in disguise, finally achieving his dream of becoming a manager .. Has anyone seen the two together recently? What do you think they did with the REAL Appleton? Maybe Tescos burgers should be checked to see whether horse and pig dna aren't the only things used.. I mean, we can't put anything past these indians can we?
I'm really starting to worry about the resolute and antagonistic venom that runs through some people on here and the idea of "supporter" that some of these "I was there when we.." supporters. A part of me almost wills Venky's to succeed and get us back to the premiership just so I can sit back and enjoy the discomfort of the doom mongers almost as much as they must be hoping for them to fail so they can sit back smugly saying "told you so".
How about just getting behind the team for a change and stop looking for the negative in every article and word before it happens, as painting your face blue and white, crying freedom as you bend over and show your @rse doesn't make you a fan, make you Wallace or is going to get rid of Venky's.
And it certainly isn't helping the club to get out of this mess.

Blackburn 2.50 pm Saturday the 19th of January 2013 we are supposed to be clapping, cheering and welcoming yet another manager to our ranks well....
I for one will not be clapping a cynical manager who has joined for money with no legitimate criteria for taking on the management of our beloved club.
A mere puppet of a sad employee Shaw who was determined to get one over on another sad employee Singh of the club.
Yet another person with no link, loyalty to our club and until a few days ago had no association whatsoever.
I just equate the whole scenario to one I have witnessed at work on so many occasions. People being brought in who have no connection whatsoever with the organisation but arriving at the behest of some jumped up manager.
On Saturday I will not Boo / Chant or abuse Appleton and his highly qualified sidekick Westwood but I will feel pure hatred inside when I see the Neanderthal figure and his associate on our touchline who is only here to cream off a big fat salary for himself and to protect his mate Shaw's self interests in the boardroom against Singh.
How can he have been allowed to grace our historic corridors of power. When I think of the folks that have occupied our dugout over the years I despair.
Just another couple on the Blackburn gravy train with no experience to be on it.
Why they could not have done all of this at their beloved Preston is beyond me. Shaw Chairman of Preston - Appleton ex Preston player and now Shaw our "Managing Director" how have we arrived at this?????
Interesting how his interview(s) have been full of REAL emotion and love for our magnificent club, this if he was really genuine, would SHINE through no matter how directed he has been by our newly acquired PR firm, even more relishing the Rovers gravy train. You just cannot hide such things.
The whole sorry situation "Stinks"

Obviously the Venky's have pledged to provide the guy with funds because he said: "A few new faces will do the club a whole world of good, it will bring fresh competition, but it has to be players who will affect the starting XI, not the 18".
Why he's being slated for accepting a higher wage I don't know. He was offered a higher wage so he would leave Blackpool. If he'd of been offered the same wage, he'd of stayed put.
We were never going to get Souness, Dalglish, Curbishley or anyone like that. Even if we had of got one of them, Souness and Dalglish have been proven to be out of their depth in modern football.
I'm just trying to be positive because I think it's pointless to selectively find faults in every decision being made. There will never be progress with that attitude despite what has happened.
What has happened, has happened, and we have no control over it. We don't even know what's going on behind scenes anyways, hence all these conspiracy theories, which might I add, are idiotic and mindless.

These two (four if you include Agnew and Westwood) certainly will not, due the very nature of how they have gone about their business together and colluded behind the scenes.
They have brought nothing but contempt to Rovers fans before even setting foot in the place on Saturday.
How? with this in mind, can anyone possibly welcome them to Ewood Park.
Wonder what the discussions were like with their respective lawyers around their contracts. I bet: "I really want to come to Rovers regardless of the money" did not feature to heavily in the conversation.
How much am I to be paid - How long is my contract to be - WIIFM What is in it for me and my mate Westwood etc etc would have been the order of the day.
His interviews have been devoid of all emotion to be joining our great club which indicates and reflects hugely on the one and only reason he has joined us.

At least it had the dignity to rust from the outside - in.
Unlike Roosters who are decaying from the inside - out.

So the doomongers and naysayers will have to find more sh1t to peddle instead, but do they come on here and apologise, do they hold their hand up and say it was a bad call and they were just sh1t peddling dingles trying to wind folk up. No they move on to the next sh1t peddling session and suck in all the numpties all over again.

What particular ambitions do the owners have then Michael? To carry on asset stripping until all the parachute payments are made then bugg3r off.
No doubt I'll be slated off by some for this , but I have something between my ears that enables me to see the wood through the trees and I'll say it again... He's just another puppet who's strings are being pulled by clowns & he's come for more money than that tight git Oyston was paying him.
I won't berate players or the manager during games and I'll give him a chance to prove me wrong and if I am I'll put my hands up and admit it while I'm showing my @rse in Burtons window

Some of the players he is rumoured to be looking at are ideal for this league and the fact he has already brought in a goalkeeping coach he knows backs up his statement regarding staff.
Looking forward to tomorrow, weather permitting of course, lets hope the boo boys don't destroy everything again.

As for those people moaning about Appleton's comments about the owners' ambitions, I think you'll find that it's a standard response by most managers when they join a club. It's not just a Venky's thing.
Good luck to the lads tomorrow, looking forward to seeing Appy's first team selection. Rovers 2 Charlton 0 Burnley insignificant.

He is just an embarrassment and shouldn't be anywhere near a football club - that was pretty clear to everyone from day one.
It was strange sacking the coaches before bringing in a new manager, especially whilst keeping CH, I'll give him that one. Mind you, dismissing competent staff is nothing new to Venkys; it seems to be their modus operandi.
Singh has shut up and Venkys are visiting Blackburn; both a matter of days after hiring a PR company. It really is embarrassing; if they couldn't come up with those master strokes by themselves then heaven help us. PR? more like STFO, as in state the f@cking obvious. Then again, they are on the other side of the World with only a load of squabbling schoolgirls keeping them up to speed on what's happening in a business they still know f@ck all about.
BRFC are also clients of sports management company (Bergander Sports). They have some pretty impressive clients including Chelsea and Everton so it would seem they know what they are doing. I haven't been able to find out when they were taken on, it may well have been before Venkys came in - as I said, it seems a competent outfit so it would be most unusual for Venkys to hire people who knew what they were doing. However, my money would be on just before they put some bums on seats in the boardroom and then hired Singh as their front man. Filling those positions was another example of STFO although it's safe to say the individuals they actually put there have been a touch disappointing.
Good luck to MA but no amount of tvrd polishing will get us out of the mess Venkys have created.

We have got no reason to doubt his sincerity. Give him a chance. Should he show in the next few weeks he is no better than that which went before then the fans will be entitled to give him stick. Until then, good luck Michael, the team and all at Ewood Park. (except the Venky's, they have burnt their bridges long ago.).

One thing Venkys haven't done is make any money from buying Rovers. Quite the opposite, if anything. All the player sales were to cover the massive losses - £19m in the first year and about £15m last (without those sales). They have since spent a bit whilst retaining the equally massive wage bill with about £25m less coming in this year. This suggests another, probably bigger, loss is just around the corner.

Every other manager we have appointed have stated the same politically correct claptrap when all the evidence points to the fact that the only ambition held by our owners is to strip everything of value from the club.
I really hope you do well and that the team can maintain their recent good form but making statements like this will not endear you to the fans so stop the nonsense and do your talking on the pitch.
We have heard nothing but claptrap for 2 years now and look at where the so called ambition our owners has taken us. Get the team performing and you will be loved but don't patronise us please!!

That's correct it was a sh1te car from the 80's.
The basic model was known as the Talbot Sunbeam Burnley edition.
It had a steering wheel, seats, a handbrake and 4 gears. Very basic but the owners were very easily pleased and thought themselves lucky they had a car to share among the family - ring any bells?
Now then, regarding dirt boxes - I have to admit as Blackburns answer to a young version of Hugh Hefner (I'm only 75 - hence the MCMLXXV), the 4 laydees I have residing in my castle just love a bit of brown star action from time to time. I just assumed you gaylords from Swampley enjoyed some bumder action with each other as well as your other bizarre family activities.....
