New Hammers bid for Swede Olsson set to be turned down as Rovers eye Wiseman
8:01am Thursday 17th January 2013 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BARNSLEY defender Scott Wiseman has emerged on Blackburn Rovers’ radar as new boss Michael Appleton starts to plot the club’s route back into Championship play-off contention.
While West Ham United are understood to have now bid in the region of £4million for Martin Olsson – just 24 hours after manager Sam Allardyce said they were unlikely to raise their bid from an initial £2m.
But Rovers remain keen to hold on to the Swede and Appleton is also eager to add to his squad before the end of January.
Appleton was close to signing 27-year-old Wiseman when he was Blackpool boss earlier this month, with the Yorkshire outfit now braced for him to revive his interest in the versatile defender.
No official contact has yet been made as Rovers mull over other possible transfer business but the Tykes would be willing to let their former skipper leave for a fee in the region of £150,000.
A number of other potential targets are also understood to be being considered at Ewood Park, including West Brom centre back Craig Dawson.
Rovers are believed to be one of a host of Championship clubs tracking the England under 21 international with regards a possible loan move, although they may all have to wait until later in the window.
Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers are also understood to be tracking the 22-year-old.
The Ewood Park club had expressed an interest in former midfielder David Bentley before Appleton’s appointment, with the Spurs man believed to be interested in a return, but sources close to the player are unsure if any move will now materialise.
Rovers’ transfer business this window is likely to depend on potential January departures, with French defender Gael Givet still hopeful of an exit.
The loss of Givet would strengthen Appleton’s need for defensive reinforcements, with Dawson then becoming a more immediate target.
Barnsley’s Wiseman can play at either right back or centre back and was all set to move to Bloomfield Road at the start of the January transfer window, when Appleton was manager there.
Blackpool had a bid accepted but the move broke down due to personal terms, as Appleton grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of transfer activity at Rovers’ Lancashire rivals.
Wiseman would be keen on a move having fallen out of favour in recent weeks, including receiving heavy criticism from the Oakwell supporters.
Bristol City are also believed to be interested in him, while if Chelsea loanee Todd Kane continues to impress at Rovers, Appleton may opt to extend his spell at Ewood Park instead.
Meanwhile Rovers remain hopeful summer Leon Best will return to action next month, having missed the season so far after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Best moved to Ewood from Newcastle United for in the region of £3million but injured himself in a pre-season friendly against AEK Athens.

four million for Olsson, keeping players on loan will probably be the more
realistic option for Venkys.

Bentley would be an ideal signing as he could give the supply we badly require from the right hand side for Rhodes and Best when he returns. The young lad from Chelsea is full of running but he needs to learn when to pass the ball and isnt the answer to our defensive frailties. We require a good CB who can command the area and win those balls that Danns doesnt seem tall enough to reach.

Seriously though Wiseman is exactly the kind of grafter we need to get us outa here. He wasn't their captain for nothing and another leader on the pitch is exactly what we need. Not bothered if he's £1.50 so long as he does a job, unlike Etuhu who has been pants considering his athleticism, him and murphy have been passengers.

Cmon we have had some great players in the past who have signed for peanuts... at least give them a chance;
appleton knows he has to win over the fans and hit the ground running if he is not going to be slated...
so he is not going to bring in players he does not think will do a job for him.
My only worry is if the fiddlers behind the scenes have anthing to do with it .... then they will be useless.

Cant see it happening surely even Venky's wont sign a player who "disses" them to family and friends?

That's true harwoodstblue, if Rovers had more supporters like lusorover then Venky's wouldn't need to hire a PR firm and could probably spend that money on players, unfortunately not many Rovers fans seem to have the realistic understanding of the running costs of a football club that lusorover is demonstrating.
Venky's are spending millions more on Rovers than any other club in the division is spending, losing about £2 million per month. If you say you've made a profit of £30 million on players sales (no idea of the actual figure) then at £2 million a month that's only going to last 15 months, just over a year - without spending any of it on transfer fees.
Having had years and years of supporting Rovers where finances weren't an issue has sheltered your fans from the reality. You used to laugh at Burnley and ask where all the money had gone but we actually are very aware of the reality of the situation with club finances at this level without rich backers. It's not just the headline figure of the transfer fee which is almost never all up front, it's wages, signing on fees, agents fees, loyalty bonuses. You've got ground maintenance, non-footballing staff, policing costs etc. It's not as simple as you think, not even close, something which lusorover has grasped and you haven't, if your fans don't get realistic then the negativity is going to drag your side down just as much as the Venky's have with their mismanagement (which, annoyingly from a Burnley fans perspective, they seem to be starting to turn a corner on) - and no one who has the money will have any interest in picking up the pieces if you drive them out.

People seem to be moaning because were looking to sell Olsson for in the region of £4m and buying Wisemann for £150,000 as negative. If we were paying £4 for Wisemann would people still be moaning? The moaning seems to be about the amount that’s being spent, if Wisemann turns out to be a great signing for that price then this is amazingly fantastic business in anybody's eyes.
What is spent on a player doesn’t always mean how good they are just compare

I just would like to see us attempt to sign a player who is going to really show we have ambition. Rochina is a playmaker, but we don't have a player who regularly gives Rhodes chances. Nunes did it for 1 game then got a hamstring problem.
At least an attempt is being made to rectify our defence. I do think Dann is improving though, he had a diabolic first season and a half however his displays recently have been dominant. I haven't seen Wiseman enough to pass comment.
Great news about the sponsor by the way!

No such problems....Yes, we had some debt like every other club, but it was well managed, probably losing £2 million per YEAR, not £2 million per month, and self inflicted.

The fact is I can remember back 50 years and still cannot recall anyone except maybe a centre half that did well in Germany but he wasn't getting too much stick when he was here.
I still think the clubs fans are the best barometer on how good the player is.Frank Lampard for example will obviously be a good signing for the club he joins as the Chelsea fans are aware he puts in a full shift.

However, if you are stating this today, how come you (and others on here) sometimes post that Venkys are putting £2m cash per month into the club to prop it up.
If you really believed that (and there is NO evidance to suggest they are) then any profits from player sales would be exactly be that as we would be running at neither a profit or a loss.
I can't beieve Paul Agnew gets £100,000s of pounds per year and the club pays you sod all - you are far better at club/Venky propaganda than he is.
Still, its nice to see you posting something thats correct for once rather than something you dreamed up on planet "Luny-Kean" where you seem to spend most of your life.

You can't criticise the losses the club are making and demand that they invest any and all transfer profit back into the player budget, they've got to balance the books somehow - if they don't then you'll be in an even bigger mess - if they were to walk out now who would take their place that could sustain your wage budget? Anyone who came in would oversee an even larger turnover of playing staff as they tried to balance the books. You might not like Venkys but at least they seem happy to underwrite your massive losses to try and get you back into the Premiership, it could be much worse.

What make me laugh are those that moan about venkys spending too much on wages etc and then moan when we look at inexpensive players.
We're passing judgement here on speculation and we're not giving the manager a chance - he has a much better idea of players in this league than berg or kean.
Doesn't matter you say though there are plenty on these pages that do nothing but moan!

No-one anywhere (well, apart from Modan and a Roverspal and they're just plain wierd) are claimin that what Venkys have done since they arrived is commendable. We all know what happened, theres no need to keep rehashing history, what is important now is what are they going to do to rectify it.
We either try to get out of the mess we're in by attending and showing support to the team or we can sit at home spitting out our dummies that we don't want to keep lining Venky's pockets or turn up only to boo and protest and risk further decline.
No doubt those same people will sleep easy knowing they can keep blaming Venky's if it happens, but it won't change the outcome.
Venky's have brought us here, it is for them to get us out of it. But we need to get behind the team and do our bit too. Sitting there stewing about the past two years certainly isnt going to get us promoted anytime soon - Neither is turning up on Saturday to give Desai a piece of your mind, it might make you feel better, it certainly wont do anything else more other than perhaps ensure its another long time before they attend a match again.
