GARY Bowyer insists he will carry on as Rovers boss until told otherwise – but admits his players’ recent efforts deserve far better than they are getting.

Rovers’ caretaker duo Bowyer and Terry McPhillips were left in limbo last night ahead of this evening’s Championship trip to Wolves – with the club locked in talks with Blackpool over Michael Appleton – but the former was adamant nothing has changed.

Rovers’ reserves boss has led the team to three straight wins after stepping in to the void left by Henning Berg’s dismissal, with the club even announcing last week he would remain in temporary charge until the end of the month.

Bowyer was thrown into the public glare during the pre-match press conference in the wake up of managing director Derek Shaw now confirming Rovers had approached Blackpool about Appleton, but he was quick to play down the significance.

He said: “I have not been told I won’t be in charge at Wolves so we will take charge of the team and hopefully get another win.

“I don’t think we can answer how unsettling it has been because we have not asked the players. We have told them to concentrate on what they can control and that is playing football.

“Unfortunately all this takes away from the press the players should be getting from their level of performances. They have had three wins in a row and we are not talking about the players and their performances.

“They deserve a bit better than that in my opinion.

“Our players deserve more credit because a lot of players could have used this as an excuse but this bunch haven’t. They have burst up together and gone and produced the level of performances they have shown.

“It is not about me and Terry. It would be great to win a fourth match in a row for the players and for the club.”

Former Rovers coach Dean Saunders will take charge of Wolves for the first time this evening, after his weekend appointment, looking to revive the Midlanders flagging fortunes.

But Bowyer isn’t putting any added significance on to the match for his visitors.

“It is just another game for us to go and compete,” he said. “Be aggressive in the way we play and we will try to go and get all three points.

“To be fair to the players all along they have been first class and we just went out and trained yesterday morning. We can’t control anything else outside of the training ground.

“We are looking to keep the momentum going.”

While Bowyer and McPhillips have batted away any questions about whether they would want the managerial job full time, he admits the last few weeks in the role have been enjoyable, He said: “I have loved it, loved it.

“The players have been magnificent, enjoyed it and we will continue to do so because they are a great bunch of players.

“We will continue to do that until told.

“The pair of us have got a lot of experience in football. We have been involved in it all our lives and we knew anything could happen. It still can.

“We will just keep going and preparing the team to go and win at Wolves. We bought the club some time and that is what we set out to do.

“The club are exercising their right now. I was told on Wednesday night an approach had been made, when it came out I was aware there could always be approaches made to managers.

“It did not surprise me because we know anything can happen. We have been out and trained and I know as much as yourselves.”
