BREAKING NEWS: Blackpool reject Rovers' approach for Appleton
9:20am Thursday 10th January 2013 in Football
Michael Appleton
BLACKPOOL have rejected Blackburn Rovers' approach for manager Michael Appleton as chaos once again reigns at Ewood Park.
Rovers' managing director Derek Shaw confirmed an approach had been made late last night, but Blackpool have responded this morning with a refusal to allow them to speak.
Last night's official approach surprised many at Ewood Park, with global advisor Shebby Singh in the dark and caretaker duo Gary Bowyer and Terry McPhillips only informed minutes before it was made public.
It is understood the interest in Appleton comes from Shaw and operations director Paul Agnew, although they were also the duo reponsible for releasing the statement announcing Bowyer would be in temporary charge until the end of the month - also to Singh's surprise.
Appleton, who has not been at the club this week but was expected to take Blackpool training today, is understood to be growing increasingly frustrated at a lack of transfer activity at Bloomfield Road.
He said last week he hoped to make ‘four or five’ signings by today but has so far been left with none - after a move for Barnsley full back Scott Wiseman collapsed due to personal terms.
He was also left frustrated at not being backed for a move to extend the stay of Bournemouth’s Wes Thomas, leaving some at Rovers hopeful they could lure him to Ewood.
Appleton has been made the strong favourite for the Ewood Park role by the bookmakers.
Rovers have already announced caretaker duo Gary Bowyer and Terry McPhillips would be in charge until the end of the month, after Henning Berg’s dismissal following just 10 games in charge.
The pair now don't know if they will continue in the hot seat for tomorrow’s Championship trip to Wolves as efforts are ongoing in the background to find a long term successor.
Rovers’ managerial search is complicated by a divide at the top of the club, with directors Paul Agnew and Derek Shaw in conflict with global advisor Shebby Singh.
All three are in contact withclub matriarch Anuradha Desai, who is based in India, and she – together with co owners Balaji and Venkatesh Rao – will have the final say on the managerial decision.
Former Doncaster and Nottingham Forest boss Sean O’Driscoll is understood to be on Singh's possible Rovers wish-list.

Why on earth would we want Appleton?
When will we get a proper top team again including a conventional Chairman / MD / FD structure?
Come on Venkys - it really is not the complicated! How you apparently survivie in business elsewhere is a mysetery to me. You are a disgrace.

Academic now I know, but I do not think considering Mr Appletons record at Pompey is really fair, he had to contend with financial limitations and transfer embagos etc.
I wish Venkys and the club would at least listen to the fans, most of whom seem to have more idea than they do, and those with experience etc.
There are lots of excellent managers out there who are available, why do the club find it necessary to try and pinch another club's manager? Barmy and quite ridiculous. The timing was so bad as well.
Andy Cryers excellent article about respect etc is spot on. Those running the club - read and learn!!! The article certainly reflects the thoughts and emotions of us fans, thanks Andy

THATS what the problem is, not the person. The whole circus involved with his appointment. If he'd thrown his hat in the ring and said he was interested in the job like the other managers we've heard of, it would have been a different story.

I would not trade Bowyer for Appleton.
I'd be talking to experienced managers, privately, to see if I could land a seasoned pro with a record of at least some success. Examples for me would include Hughes, Souness, Holloway, Mcarthy etc etc.
I'd also be hoping Bowyer kept on winning...the longer that goes on the more inclinded I'd be just to back him.

Dont think anyone can say for sure if this is going to be a good or bad move, it will be pot luck because the guy doesnt have enough previous experience to say "yes he will do well at Blackburn". We could either have a new Mark Hughes in charge, or more likely a new Ince.
But this does look like the Venkys have had enough of Shebby because Appleton must have been Derek Shaws idea, and expect him to be the next out the door after several crap signings, the decision to hire Berg and a few cringy radio interviews.

Blackburn Rovers have approached Blackpool manager Michael Appleton to become their new manager as they bid to put a halt to their recent run of good form.
Blackburn’s owners are believed to be eager to appoint a new manager after the club edged precariously towards the play-off places under the stewardship of caretaker boss Gary Bowyer.
Blackpool have confirmed that they have been approached by Blackburn for permission to speak to Appleton, whose record of 15 wins in 63 games has impressed the club’s hierarchy.
“Michael’s record speaks for itself,” said Rovers global advisor Shebby Singh.
“We wanted someone with experience, and his track record of standing forlornly on the touchline and looking pained in post-match interviews is second to none.”
“We are confident that he is the man to take the club in the direction we want.”
Blackburn manager
Rovers’ fans have revealed they are delighted with the prospect of Appleton taking up the reins as they look for the club to appoint someone they can verbally abuse week in, week out.
“It’s not been the same since Steve Kean left,” said season ticket holder Gary Davies.
“I work all week and all I want to do on a Saturday is unleash a tirade of angry red-faced vitriol.
“Pointing at the dugout and singing ‘You seem to know what you’re doing’ doesn’t really provide the hate-fuelled experience that I’ve grown accustomed to.
“I just want the ignominy days back.”

Maybe the Venky's thought Ian Holloway was still the boss at Blackpool and we could make a "better late than never" approach for him. It would not suprise me.
Leave the two temp guys in charge for now. We have not won three in a row since 2008 so I will take them as the management team for now, rather than some of the shi*e names that the Venky's are interested in.
Only problem is if the temporary management team get the job and we start losing a few games again, we all know how fickle our fans are and they will soon turn on the management again.

We then appoint another inexperienced manager at this level and has a bad track record in his own country takes us further down the league.
We are now trying to attract another inexperienced manager with no track record. Whilst all this is going on we are paying out compensation, so how much does that add up to and would this not have been better spent on one experienced manager in the first place?

When Hendry was manager at Blackpool he was on course to take them down to the Conference.
Simon ,Grayson took over from Hendry and Grayson won 6 out of the last 7 games to keep them up, Grayson performed a miracle after Hendry`s disastrous reign as manager at Blackpool.
But yet again Hendry did do a good job at Rovers as defensive coach and driving Kean to the pub and back.
