Rovers' boss decision on hold
7:51am Friday 4th January 2013 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
GARY Bowyer and Terry McPhillips will continue in temporary charge at Blackburn Rovers until at the least the end of the month – as Venky’s bid to sort out the conflict among the Ewood Park hierarchy.
Rovers’ reserve boss Bowyer and under-18 manager McPhillips have guided the club to two successive wins since Henning Berg’s dismissal and will now be in the hot seat for the next four games.
Global advisor Shebby Singh had previously stated his desire to appoint a new manager on New Year’s Day but it is believed operations director Paul Agnew and managing director Derek Shaw have pleaded with Venky’s to listen to their advice.
The duo flew to India last weekend to hold crisis talks with their bosses, during which their concerns over Singh’s role at the club are understood to have been discussed.
They are now understood to be barely on speaking terms with the Malaysian. Singh’s claim that Rovers would offer any new boss an initial six month deal is understood to have come as a surprise to both and Venky’s have now opted to take their time before deciding on the way forward.
Both parties believe they have the support of their bosses with sources in India telling the Lancashire Telegraph the current structure and personnel is being looked discussed, with the current situation untenable.
It is understood the possibility of bringing in a short-term figurehead with a high profile name, to teach an upcoming coach the ropes, was discussed during crisis talks held in Pune but no firm decisions have been made.
Sven-Goran Eriksson became the latest manager to have expressed an interest in the vacant managerial role at Rovers, with Phil Brown and former Rovers coach Mark Bowen also understood to be interested.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands former Doncaster and Nottingham Forest boss Sean O’Driscoll is favoured by some at the club, but no decisions are likely to made imminently as attempts are made to sort out internal power struggles.
The decision does create uncertainty around Rovers’ transfer window business, although Singh has said previously the club are unlikely to be making many signings.
Josh King has already been added from Manchester United by the managerless club but, if Singh is to believed, there are unlikely to be many more additions.
He said: “Josh is a special talent and we are very happy to have him on board but we have got a very, very big squad of talented players so I would say there will not be too much movement on the transfer front.
“We have a big, good squad of players and unless someone knocks on my door and insists on leaving then no one is leaving.
“They would have to break my door down and insist on leaving or else I’m not allowing anyone to leave.”

I think that most Rovers fans believe that we need at least 1 decent central midfielder, possibly 2 if we are going to have any chance of claiming that last play off spot - the midfield a far too weak as it is. As for the power struggle - easy, sack all 3 of them - that would solve alot of our problems straight away and appoint 1 proper CEO who can then assemble his own team (finance director, comercial manager etc). Why do Venkys make hard work every single decision - and even then they always seem to make the wrong decision !!

If they do go that way then Svennis may be actually be ok for that role - as he has excellent International, English and Italian League experience and could be perfect as a 'supremo'.
Best point from the article is that it sounds like Shebby is on his way out....

1) we were going to announce a new manager after the barnsley game
2) we were going to take on a hired hand on a six month contract to be reviewed against targets at the end of the season
3) left bowyer and mcphillips in charge til the end of january and will review.
its as clear as mud.
personally, i would leave 3) til the end of the season. they know the players, they know the young 'uns coming through, they won't demand new incoming transfers and they know the clowns running our club.

Sounds like they are looking for someone in a Director of Football role. Not sure that works, I remember King Kenny doing that here with Harford as manager. Kenny improved his golf handicap - but that was about the only good thing that came out of that appointment!

The normal scenario is that they were nodding and smiling but didn't really understand what either party actually wanted them to do.
They will then decide to do something different, that usually makes nobody happy but didn't cost much, and leave both parties wondering WTF !

Shabby - TOTAL UTTER BUFFOON
Shaw - only claim to fame, nearly bankrupted PNE
Agnew - press officer to Director of Operations - come on now!!!

Learn your history - he was one of the 3 "masterminds" that colluded to derail the club, sack SA, get rid of JW - why, so they could make millions from transfer dealings and promotions/money for themselves.
Agnews reward was to receive a directorshp, Keans was to become manager and someone called JA made millions in commisions in the Jan 2011 transfer window.
Just because Agnew is standing up to to SS dosent make him less guilty of crimes against BRFC.

The back room is an absolute joke. Venkys have caused this by getting rid of the infrastrucure of the club across the last two years. We now have a split in the running of the club and to be honest Shebby Singh must go if they are to sort this mess out. The running of any club should be done by a board of directors we had this prior to Venkys, a sound sensible knowledgeable board, now we have puppets who cannot do anything. Singh obviously makes the recommendations (He has simply replaced Kean in this regard) that go to Venkys who rubber stamp them, where do Shaw and Agnew, Coar, Silk etc come into the equation...quite simply they don't seem to. This operating model does not work, Kean was given too much power now Singh has the same power it seems.
Hence the whole club is run on unsound foundations and as a result we have the mess we have today with in house fighting.
Venkys do not seem interested enough (or close enough) in this part of their empire to change this though and have simply employed Shabby to run this for them...unfortunately they have employed the wrong man who likes the sound of his own voice, has his own opinions but does not seem to listen to reason...he is a danger to our club, a loose canon.
Until our club is returned to a board of directors making informed decisons after debate we will go on making mistakes and continue to look like a club without a rudder.

By the way, I know it's a fun site here, but some of you guys really live in cloud-cuckoo land playing "the new manager game" and suggesting Sven, Carra and looking for promising managers in lower divisions. As my grandchildren say "get real". Rovers is a business for Venkys, always has been and now for the reasons we all know, it's an obviously failed business.
Shabby has a license to mouth off, but what happens at Ewood can't be understood if you start from a footie perspective. It's now about an exit strategy from a failed and ill-advised business venture.

I applaud the results that Gary Bowyer and Terry McPhillips have achieved in the last two games. But does that justify the cynical decision for Shebby to say they will carry on until the end of January? Why the end of January? There can only be one reason - it is the end of the transfer window. In the meantime Shebby will have free rein to bring in anyone he likes.
Clearly that will not work. I think it is pretty obvious that one or all of Paul Robinson, Gael Givet and Morten Gamst Pederson will be leaving before January 31 saving something in the order of £6 million in wages.
But will they be replaced? Probably not, although again it is pretty obvious that all three should be. The quality in each position would be threadbare.
At the same time we are left to carry on with a threadbare coaching staff, too.
We truly have a dysfunctional and inoperable club – and now we discover there is in-fighting on the corridors of power. The hierarchy simply cannot continue in its present form and unless Venky’s restore the infrastructure they took over and so recklessly trashed we cannot move forward.
The thought of Shebby bringing in more players makes my heart sink.

Money, money, money. Venkys must now know we're not even going to get back into the Premiership. They're not going to spend any more cash, they're cutting the running costs before going. Our only hope is that we're still in the Championship.

Word is that none of the board of directors even knew about Berg's sacking until they heard it on the news and that was why Agnew & Shaw suddenly flew out to India to find out what the hell was happening. This is a professional football club with 137 years of history and the board of directors don't even know that the manager has been sacked!
My prediction is that Bowyer will win one of the next few games, be given the job until the end of the season, Singh will be ordered to keep his trap shut for a couple of months and things will go quiet after the carnival of the last week.
Of course I could be wrong. The owners could sack Singh, entrust Shaw to make the appointment and he would bring in a proper manager. Don't think so somehow.

Forget new players whilst this mess rambles on as I can't see a manager being appointed this season now as it's a right off and the bottom line is they don't want a manager to manage as they keep using the phrase coach and I don't think we will ever get a manager again in the sense that we know it. We need at least one center back REGARDLESS of whether Givet is leaving. As soon as either Dann or Hanley are injured were up shebby creek without a paddle.
We need a pacey link player and we need a goalkeeper because we are down to bare bones without Robbo.
I would actually agrue our center mid pairing of Murphy + Lowe is pretty solid. Etuhu is decent enough cover. I think the rest of the squad makes the center mid look trash. Murphy - Since the boo's - for me has been putting in 100% effort every game and looking to make more forward passes now and Lowe is a massive prospect.

Not surprisingly there has been a mixed reaction to the mixed messages Shebby and the Venky’s have sent out over the last few days.
On what criteria will they be bought? What the agents’ pay-off will be – and maybe what’s in it for Shebby himself?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The only person who can decide who to buy and sell is the manager. Only affordability and negotiation is left with higher authority.
Before Alex Ferguson buys any player he has a full dossier on that player. His attitude, his temperament, his character, his lifestyle. And most of all – will he fit into the team? No doubt other managers follow a similar criteria.
Not “How much is there in it for me?”
Our deaf and dumb owners in Pune must surely know by now what is wrong and how to put it right, but still they will not grasp the enormity of the situation. For the life in me I cannot understand their objective. They have not made one correct decision in over two years.
How do they expect to get back to the Premiership – even survive in the Championship – running the club with third-rate players, third-rate managers, a laughable ‘Global Advisor’ who interferes in team affairs, an operations director who has had four titles in 12 months and who does not ‘operate’, a managing director who cannot manage. A global advisor who is no more than a poor Malaysian tv pundit. An operations director who was a poor press officer. And all the time without the one person they so desperately need - a strong and experienced leader?
Why are they still stumbling around in the dark?
The suggestion that in our situation a manager can teach an up-coming coach the managerial ropes is just mind-numbing. And as for the last three sentences of the above story – we’ll see.

They did not wear Claret and Blue at school, they didn't need to: their cross focussed eyes, hovering vacantly below heavily hooded lids and eyebrows that not only met in the middle but extended to mingle with their nostril hair making them instantly recognisable to those of us with the regulation ten digits.
Our teachers battled courageously to accommodate the conflicting intellects of Buurnleh boys and normally adjusted pupils and I admired them as they acted more like missionaries than teachers in at least trying to stop them from eating their schoolmates.

To be honest unfortunately I would just give the job to Bowyer and co because whoever comes in at the end of Jan and once the transfer window has closed will not make the slighteest bit of difference and may be counter productive because they will have to get to grips with the squad and find who they like etc. look what happened to Berg he could not find the balance quickly enough and he and we have paid the price with the dreadful run of results.
I agree with noddymcleod and RoverinRotterdam above. Are we now witnessing the beginning of the end of Venky’s? When this window closes they will just about have bled their cash cow dry – and there is no chance of reviving it. They have trashed everything they bought. Are they now setting out their exit strategy from what has become a self-inflicted failed project, but a living hell for us?

We all know that recruiting a new manager is far from a science. The previous hierarchy from Uncle Jack to John Williams chose some managers who turned out to be the wrong ones for the club. So much apparently depends on how well they are able to get the prima donna players on side. For example, Hodgson did well until he fell out with Sherwood. At least the noises coming out of the dressing room now are that the players are united behind Bowyer and we appear to have a shape and a plan. That's something we haven't had for 2 years. Get a good spirit and that can go a long way - all of a sudden players who didn't look good enough can start performing.
Let's hope that January will see Singh leave and us have a local director trusted to do his job - and a few more wins!

Venkys are NOT putting a single penny into the club - nor have they ever done.
We are LOSING and estimated £2m per month - no-one, not even SS has ever said Venkys are covering this with cash - all Venkys have done is to file a letter with the accounts (which apparently is standard practice in this situation) to say they parent company has cash and assets to cover the loses of Venkys London Ltd - that is a million miles away from actually putting money into the club.
Please DO NOT spread such lies that Venkys are putting cash into Rovers - they have never put a single penny of their own money into the club.

This was money that could not be audited by the accountants and who (understandably) were very unhappy about signing off this in the accounts and put a clear clause against this figure stating they had no idea what the £3.4m was for.
Most people believe it was for the purchase of Gary Nevilles house, but under UK law, if it was paid for by money from Venkys London Ltd then it should be shown on the books as an asset - it was not.
Don't believe me - go and get a copy of the accounts and see for yourself, £3.4m completely unaccounted for.

Very surprised to read that Rovers have got a large squad of very good players according to Sabby. Shows how very little he knows. I think most fans will agree that Rovers have a large squad of largely poor players most of whom are fed up enough to easily break down Shabby's door. (So much by the way for his early announcement that "his door was always open"!)

And I doubt very much that they will EVER put any of their own money in.
All they have done is take it out and after the outgoings during this transfer window, it can't be very long before there's nothing left to take out.
!!!!!!!
Why do you say such lies ?????
The accounts have ust been published and showed NOT 1 penny being put in by Venkys - infact they show CLEARLY that Venkys took out £3.4m (don't believe me, buy the accounts and have a look - its there in black and white).
Infact I don't think even Venkys themselves or SS have ever said they are putting £2m a month in.
We are LOSING £2m per month - they arn't putting that it.
Stop spreading such pro-Venky lies - if it were true I can guarantee you Venkys and SS would be giving interview after interview telling the world how great and generous they are - how you heard SS saying Venkys are putting £2m CASH into Rovers every month - NO, you havent because he has never said it.
STOP spreading such untruths !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job Gary Bowyer and the players know what they are doing, they at least are doing their jobs properly. Thanks Gary, Terry and the team, you are doing a great job for us supporters in what appear to be very difficult circumsances,
Not sure who Shabby thinks he is, but I do wish he would push off back to Malaysia and cause problems somewhere else. How many managers do the club need - he seems to think he is the manager? I think he is a big problem because he is a loose cannon.
The comments in this article illustrate why we get so many contradictory statements from the club, and why the left hand does not seem to know what the right hand is doing.
The proposed 6 month contract and temporarey arrngement sound ood to me, whoever decided it. Probably the office cleaner!

Would someone please pass on my apologies to Gary Bowyer for my empty seat tomorrow but I will not be back until Venky's decide and declare who exactly is running this club. It makes my blood boil to see comments from Shebby The Snake about players " banging on his office door". Why does he need an office when he can just slither down the corridors and sneak under the doors and the skins of those executives that he consistently seeks to undermine? This individual is a toxic, deluded self publicist with no credibility or crednetials. His continued presence here underlines the belief that Venky's really do not know what they are doing and never will whilst this conman is advising them.

In any case, his activities have probably upset many of the players, and what is the point of retaining unhappy and unsettled players?

Or maybe they don't see a need for a future youth set up because if they keep pulling these stunts, nobody will associate themselves with a bunch of halfwitts.
Anyone who employs a windbag to run a footbal club has to be deranged.
How they dare call Rovers their baby is evil and shows how they use cliches that people like to hear, but with no meaning, just like scabby, they deserve each other, but they do not deserve this club.

Sounds like they are looking for someone in a Director of Football role. Not sure that works, I remember King Kenny doing that here with Harford as manager. Kenny improved his golf handicap - but that was about the only good thing that came out of that appointment!
If they do go that way then Svennis may be actually be ok for that role - as he has excellent International, English and Italian League experience and could be perfect as a 'supremo'.
Best point from the article is that it sounds like Shebby is on his way out....
I would definitely check out Karl Robinson's personal credentials and his standing in the game as I believe he and Bowyer together couldbe for us what Eddie Howe is to Bournemouth

I was at the game the other day and was in the corporate bit. Before the match the speaker (dont know his name because i don't get up there that often) Made plenty of jokes about how things were being run by 'that lot' as he called them. The the same after. Also kazim came up to get his mom the match award, and he had the same attitude. Talked about 'what ever's going on behind the scenes' being ignored.
I'm not saying the stand in management team is the answer, but by the sounds of it the players are playing for them. Makes sense, considering a lot of the lads have worked with them before in the youth set up. The way kasim hugged bowyer when he scored hasn't been seen for a long time.
who know's what tomorrow will bring in the brfc saga, but for now i'm going to embrace what little we've been given. Rare moments like these we should enjoy:)

I have been to work, seen the outside world, spoken to real people and enjoyed driving my new italian car.
You have spent all day arguing with yourself to make it look like there other people that share your weird twisted view of life and Rovers
BTW in your JC personna, you might learn to read a balance sheet before trying to make the accounts sound far worse than they really are. You are just twisting the facts again and picking out the bits that suit. I can read a set of accounts far better than you my Six fingered enemy
I am sorry I upset you so much last night.
Firstly, last time I looked I had 5 fingers, not six and secondly, I am not your enemy, I'm just a Rovers fan who see's things from a different perspective to you.
As for the accounts -
1 - we made a small (few million profit) after selling £24m of players.
2 - We made an operating loss of approx £19m.
3 - Player wages to club turnover was up to 92.2%.
4 - There was a £3.4m "hole" that the auditors could not account for.
5 - Debt was around £20m (after we had been told as recently as summer that the club was now debt free).
6 - Venkys themselves state in the accounts that "the club has not got enough revenue streams going forwards to cover its outgoings".
Thats not me making things up or "being negative" - thats what is stated in the accounts.
If you want to state all the "positive things" in those accounts then please do so.
The BRFCS podcasts have covered those accounts twice in detail and with 3 different accountants who have all stated that the accounts were horrific and that the current situation is much worse (as has Andy Cryer, at least twice on national radio).
Current wages to turnover is believed to be (acording to BRFCS accountants and AC) around 125% of turnover and losses are currently running at around £2m per month.
I'm sorry if those FACTS have made you choke on your cornflakes - thats not my intention - I just believe fans should understand our true postion and that the accounts are very important because, unlike Venkys or SS - they tell the TRUE PICTURE.
Enjoy the game today and lets hope we'll enjoy a good, confidance boosting win.

We may well be able to offer him a decent package but not substantially more than a lot of other clubs. He would look at the long game, career wise, and any small short term gain would be heavily outweighed by what he could earn in future. This would rely on him a) having the ability, obviously and b) being given a fair chance to show he has that ability.
That will never happen with the clowns we have in charge.
If I was Carragher's, or any young manager's, agent I would tell them to steer well clear. Like you say though, money talks and there will always be somebody out there that needs a job. Ex-managers, untried coaches (a particular favourite of Singh, it would seem) and all those in between who would be willing to "accept the challenge" as they will doubless call it; more fool them.

Whilst scabby is dallying with Mc Phil and Mr Bowyer, who is doing their original job, the tea lady? Scabby's niece's neighbour perhaps? Or maybe they don't see a need for a future youth set up because if they keep pulling these stunts, nobody will associate themselves with a bunch of halfwitts. Anyone who employs a windbag to run a footbal club has to be deranged. How they dare call Rovers their baby is evil and shows how they use cliches that people like to hear, but with no meaning, just like scabby, they deserve each other, but they do not deserve this club.

Realistically though the Premiership is more dream than reality now.
Venkys bought the club out of vanity or as a marketing exercise. Its just one of their many businesses and theyll treat it as such, not with the clubs interests at heart as with uncle Jack. They'll just get rid or run it down when it suits them financially and without any conscience whatsoever. They dont care, its just business.
What happens after that is anybodys guess. Whos going to come along and buy us? We were hardly beating buyers off with a stick when we were a well run top ten prem club, had the best chief exec in the country, and there wasn't a recession on.
