ACCRINGTON Stanley top scorer Rommy Boco admits it was a special moment to net the winner against Paul Cook’s Chesterfield on New Year’s Day.

Boco struck his ninth goal of the season to hand Stanley a 1-0 win on Cook’s return to the Crown Ground, three months after quitting as Reds boss to join the Spireites.

The Benin international remains friends with the man who signed him both for Stanley and Irish side Sligo, and was glad to get the all-important goal that also ended Accrington’s nine-match winless run.

“It’s true that it was a bit special for some because it’s my mate after all and I was happy to beat him,” Boco said.

“Before the game he told me to not play well as a joke, but I did my best!

“It’s nice to be able to sing in the dressing room after a game, it’s been sad for the last two months, crying every game. I wasn’t thinking about scoring this many goals this year, but it’s nice for me.”

Stanley are bringing in former Morecambe left back Laurence Wilson, a free agent after leaving Rotherham.

“I know him from playing against him and he knows a lot of our lads,” said Reds boss Leam Richardson.

“He’s played a lot of games at this level and he’s a very good player at this level. He makes us stronger.”

And Richardson now faces a different sort of goalkeeping dilemma, having twice been left without a professional goalkeeper in recent weeks.

Richardson first lost regular keeper Ian Dunbavin to a long-term shoulder injury, then saw emergency loanee Paul Rachubka banned for three games for a red card.

Out-of-favour Leeds man Rachubka could yet join Stanley on a longer term basis this month but the latest loanee, Bury’s Cameron Belford, played so well against Chesterfield that Richardson could now have a decision to make over which to sign.

Belford’s loan is expected to be extended to allow him to play at home to Dagenham on Saturday, after which Rachubka returns from a ban.

“It’s nice to have a goalkeeping dilemma on the other side of things rather than on the emergency side,” Richardson said. “They’ve both done smashing.”
