Bowyer to continue as Blackburn Rovers caretaker
9:47am Wednesday 2nd January 2013 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
THREE WISE MEN Rovers trio of goalscorers Jordan Rhodes, Colin Kazim-Richards and Ruben Rochina celebrate the Spaniard’s opening goal
GARY Bowyer will continue in charge for Blackburn Rovers’ FA Cup tie against Bristol City – with owners Venky’s not wanting to disrupt the momentum he is building.
Goals from Colin Kazim-Richards, Ruben Rochina and Jordan Rhodes gave managerless Rovers a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest, to move them just five points adrift of the play-offs with a game in hand.
Global advisor Shebby Singh had initially planned to make a decision about the new manager yesterday evening but two wins on the bounce means Bowyer will continue in the hot seat for a few more days at least.
Former Leicester City and England under–21 boss Peter Taylor became the surprise bookmakers’ favourite to take the job yesterday, with ex Preston man Billy Davies also linked, but it is understood an appointment is not now imminent.
Venky’s have been impressed by the reaction of the players to reserve team boss Gary Bowyer and under 18 manager Terry McPhillips and have decided it would be detrimental to make any rash changes.
Singh is understood to have agreed with Venky’s during a call post match that Bowyer should remain in charge on Saturday – with senior players fully behind the caretaker manager. It is also believed Bowyer and McPhillips have the opportunity to stake a claim for the job full time, although the pair remain adamant they are just helping the club out.
The delay will give Venky’s time to attempt to sort out the current divide among the Ewood Park hierarchy, with Singh barely on speaking terms with operations director Paul Agnew and managing director Derek Shaw.
The latter two flew out to India last weekend to voice their concerns about the running of the club, and Singh’s own role, and believe they need to be listened to with regards any managerial search.
Meanwhile Bowyer said after the win over Forest: “We are just carrying on and we will keep carrying on until we are told otherwise. That is as far as we know.
“I am just giving the club a little more time. Then we will see what that brings. We have been here for a long time and we care about the club, we are just helping out as much as we can.
“It has been a tough couple of days but I thought the players were magnificent again. It was a typical first half after two games and then we got a lucky goal.
“But it gave us some more energy and I can’t praise the players enough. They have been remarkable with their efforts and deserved the win.
“They are professional players and they have some pride about themselves.”
Meanwhile, Rovers are hopeful of turning Josh King’s loan move from Manchester United into a permanent deal.

I however disagree with keeping him as caretaker for the Bristol City game alone. We need an appointment now. There is a transfer window open, and quiet frankly, some inept players that need to be let go and new players brought in. We need a manager to do that, given the managers title. Not a caretaker muddling on and a "global bull-shi-tter" in the background making an idiot of themselves whilst signing more rubbish.
-
If you want to back Gary Bowyer, give him the job to the end of the season as a trial. If you do not want to, give someone else the job. But do not give it Peter Taylor, who was run out of Crystal Palace in 2007 after doing a terrible job.

He has the players playing for him, they are better organised than we have seen for a long time and some confidence is creeping back in, which was desperately required plus the added bonus of a little luck going our way for once doesn't go amiss.
And the majority of the fans who bothered to turn up instead of ranting on here and on forums went home happy.
He isn't experienced in managing a club but he is experienced in managing players and staff, and he knows the club and the players inside out
I think the majority of Rovers fans want Hughes back (me included), but his advisers have made it very clear he isn't interested, so anyone who thinks that is going to happen any day soon is in the same part of LaLa land that Venky's inhabit.
Nowhere near the part the Shebby inhabits I might add, he is off the scale.
So any managerial appointment no matter who it is, is going to be second, third, fourth etc; choice to most Rovers fans. and with all the infighting going on behind the scenes that is extremely dangerous if they get the wrong man in from the fans point of view.
But we need stability, from what I have seen so far I think Bowyer could give us a level of that.
So I think the best option is to let Bowyer get on with it for now while the expensive, lazy, whingers and whiners, who I suspect did for Berg, are cleared out over the next couple of weeks (hopefully), then if we get someone in he can hit the ground running, whoever he is.

And also well done SS - you've now got what you wanted - a chance to meddle in team affairs and buy/sell any player in this window that YOU want.
GB has already admitted that for the Barnsley game he was given a list of players that he could NOT choose from (and I also think that happened yesterday as well) - for Barnsley they included MGP, DD, PR and GG.
Whilst I don't think it'll hurt us for GB to take the team for the FA cup this Saturday - an appointment HAS to be made SOONER rather than later.
It seems that many on here don't learn from our previous mistakes - just like Venkys

Does anyone at the club know that the transfer window is open? Either appoint a new manager now, or give the job to Bowyer until at least the end of the season, and sort this bloody mess out.
This delay and confusion is tearing the club apart - and as for the alleged infighting between Shabby on one side, and Shaw and Agnew on the other, there is a very simple solution SACK THE LOT OF THEM - not one of the Three Stooges has any right to be near OUR club.

it was expected I think after two wins and with nobody decent lined-up to come in. None of the names mentioned would really fit the bill for the Rovers and for most fans, though the exception would be (for me) Mark Hughes. Despite his recent 'fails' he would bring the organisation and experience the club has been lacking and the fans have been calling for for two years now. Perhaps (hopefully) that is the reason they are taking their time - so as to try and persuade him to accept?
Anyway, back in the real world the silence from SS is quite nice. Does it mean his ideas have been slapped down by his employers?

Sat at the match yesterday, CKR gets man of the match after having a DREADFUL game which include 1 shot on target that went in the net. CKR must have lost 97% of the balls played into him. EVERY single move in the first half broke down with him, and yet he gets man of the match because he scored a goal?
Then on my way home from Ewood, Mohammed from Blackburn rings up radio Lancs and says "Bowyer should be given the job" after scraping 2 results together. HAVE WE LEARNT NOTHING!?

Bowyer has the respect of the dressing room so why upset that for someone like Taylor. Christ has he ever been succesful at all?
Thus far this is one of Venkys better decisions, there is no rush and I'm sure Bowyer can identify a player as well as well as any shortcomings in the squad balance.
I never thought I'd say this but well done Venkys, you have overidden Soggy minge and Agnew and Shaw, showing all that the buck stops with you.
Now all you have to do is sort out the madness between the three who have just been mentioned. Somethings gotta give and if they usually take option cheap it looks like bye bye shaggy.

I have a feeling that the worst in our history is now behind us. I actually feel, there is light at the end of the tunnel. 5 points outside the playoffs with a game in hand is a lot better than three weeks ago.
There is now no immediate rush to sign some journeyman manager and get it wrong again. We can now take our time and either get the right man in or stick with Bowyer if he can continue the momentum, dependant on results of course.

From what i know within the club Bowyer is well respected, a very personable character and more importantly a great coach.
I would be happy to see him as new manager, but whoever we get...everyone has got to support the manager from the get go....COYB

If it has to be an immediate choice between Bowyer, Davies or Taylor I would reluctantly go with Bowyer. Davies and Taylor both have baggage and Ewood Park is no place to begin their rehabilitation process. That said, it does not need to be an immediate choice. Leave Bowyer as caretaker for the next week or so until Venky's decide who is actually running the football club and this might persuade a more credible candidate to come forward. As for the transfer window, that's relatively straight forward. Two full backs and two centre backs to come in and a bundle of surplus midfielders off the books to free up their wages.
Bowyer's doing alright in the meantime.

If it was there plan to appoint Peter Taylor as permanent manager on another 2/3 year deal, then I am glad that Gary Bowyer's good management and motivation has avoided us making that mistake.
-
I however disagree with keeping him as caretaker for the Bristol City game alone.
A poor first half performance but he then made changes to the formation, had another slice of luck with the first goal and the players looked like they enjoyed playing for him.
However, I agree with other posters in that we need an experienced manager in soon but we mustn't make a rash decision.
What really worries me is that Shaw & Agnew are barely on speaking terms with Shebby.
If true. how can the football club function properly?
With regard to Peter Taylor and Billy Davies
Six of us had a vote in the club after the game.
5 opted for Davies and only 1 voted for Taylor.
Not sure if this would reflect the views of all Rovers fans, but if Taylor does get the job, he will not be a popular choice.
Like Berg, just where did his name come from?

Mark Hughes put QPR there in the first place, and didn't exactly set the world alight in his previous 2 jobs either. I don't agree with this teenage infatuation with big name managers. If the team keeps on winning and playing well under Bowyer and the players respect him, then he should DEFINITELY be in contention.
Bowyer is just what Venkys love.
Cheap and a kopout when it comes to havng to make a decision.
Bowyer should NEVER be in contention irrespective of whether he beats the bottom of the league, a forest in crisis and a poor Bristol 2nd XI

If Venly's get us promoted, they will moan that we should have never got relegated in the first place. If we made it to Champions league football, they would probably moan its two years too late.
But if we get relegated to division one, they'll smugly tell you, they did tell you so.
Glass always half empty some people, that's just they way they are.
Its a difficult decision to make, Bowyer has the dressing room and the players are playing better football because of it. Do you upset the apple cart and rush someone in or do you risk the transfer window but wait and make the CORRECT decision?
Those calling this a cheapo way of avoiding spending money have no idea of business obviously. The wage bill alone should tell you they don't welch out on paying out - whether you believe its their own money or not, not forgetting the ridiculous wage of one Global Advisor alone.
I highly doubt at this critical juncture, Venky's are thinking about how to save money, rather how to get out of this mess and turn things around. Rumour has it, Shebby isnt flavour of the month at the moment with the 606 interview causing huge embarrassment where it matters to Venky's, this itself could be a reason for the delay, it certainly seems that the appointment is to be a Venkys choice and not Shebby one - or else McDonald would already have been announced yesterday surely?
Also for those who question Bowyer as a contender, how many matches would he have to consecutively win for you to change your mind, or is his lack of experience to be his his achilles heel regardless of performances?
Take your time and get it right Venky's - its the right thing to do.

for what it's worth i would leave bowyer in (if he is prepared to work day to day with shabby and the other clowns) for the rest of the season:

3) he knows the youth team and whether any of them would be ready to be blooded

5) for our lovely owners he will be a cheap option (and they are hemorrhaging cash as the tv money is much reduced and there is no samba, jones, n'zonzi etc to cash-in on).

weve hopefully turned the corner
1 or 2 signings and a manager and we should be gunning for the upper echelons of the league.
Great signings KIng and Best 2013
king is fast, young and energetic
Best should be just that too.
I believe we fans should do everything possible especially in difficult times to bring the fans & BRFC together.
We need to be stronger, we need to show the world we can come together in times of need and this period is that occasion.
I believe in BRFC and Blackburn and would ask every fan and resident of the Lancashire area to get together and be positive. We shall not be allowed to be dragged to the bottom of everything.
We are a proud people of Lancashire a proud club and we should raise ourselves to where we belong to the upper echelons of English society and the the premiership again one day soon.
to the football......!!
I think we should raid clubs who are thinking of bringing in new players themselves.
e.g. QPR as it seems are a club waiting to make changes to their staff hence a good time to get some of their players.
I can think of some at QPR who could fit the bill.
what about the hard man at QPR
perfect for our feeble weak team
and hes a leader...!!
what do you guys think..?

What players would you like to see playing at BRFC ?
Have you seen any players you think could do the business for Rovers?

Paul Robinson - OK: let go if he wants out.
Grzegorz Sandomierski - Untried
Jake Kean –YOUNG Ok: Potential
Martin Olsson- OK Keep if motivated
Nuno Henrique- Untried Potential
Gael Givet- sell ; Ok Keep if motivated
Scott Dann- Ok Keep; sell if money is right
Josh Morris- YOUNG Ok Potential
Adam Henley- YOUNG Ok Potential
Grant Hanley- ok for squad not 1st team
Bruno Ribeiro- ok for squad; Potential
Jason Lowe- YOUNG Ok as squad member
David Dunn- past it; let go
Mauro Formica- Not good enough, sell if possible
Morten Gamst Pedersen- past it; let go
Danny Murphy- past it; let go
Marcus Olsson- ok for squad
Paulo Jorge- YOUNG Untried Potential
Dickson Etuhu- past it; let go
Simon Vukcevic- Ok Potential
Diogo Rosado- YOUNG OK Potential
Fabio Nunes- YOUNG OK Potential
Leon Best- ??? Hopefully ok
Jordan Rhodes- Keep of course
Joshua King- OK Buy Potential
Nuno Gomes- Ok Keep
Ruben Rochina- OK keep if motivated
Colin Kazim-Richards- OK Keep
Bradley Orr – Crap; sell
David Goodwillie ok But sell if money refunded.
we now require a midfield general, a leader, a box to box player someone who can command the team and motivate them.
& we require a good strong central defender to play alongside Dann as he lacks confident and cannot distribute the ball well.
Hopefully with a commanding figure in defence, Dann will be okay alongside.

If indeed we want to get promoted then there is one man who would virtually guarantee a play-off spot - Billy Davies.
In 5 full Championship seasons he has finished in the play-off places every single time. Its worth noting that was with Preston, Derby and Forest - none of whom have spent any money - which makes his achievements all the more remarkable. Its a strange one why he's been unemployed for 18 months since being harshly sacked by Forest, but it does appear he's a bit of a loudmouth who isn't afraid to criticse his bosses every week in the media. I would put good money on us getting promoted THIS SEASON if Davies was given the job in the next week. It should be a no-brainer. I'd prefer Davies to Hughes or Curbishley when you consider his record at this level.
If we're happy to plod along in mid-table with the likes of Burnley then there's no harm in taking a gamble and keeping Bowyer here longer term. I am very pleased that he's got the team playing much better than they were, but people suggesting he be given the job full time must have been living under a rock the last 2 years. It's an unnecessary risk to take when there are people out there who have achieved success over 10 years rather than 5 days.

Danny Murphy's a good player still.
Many of the ones I would offload are under 30, I will name them along with the ones over 30 that just don't get the job done: Colin Kazim; Goodwillie; Nuno Gomes; Goulon; Etuhu; Pedersen; Marcus Olsson; Dunn;
If we sold all those and bought in two good defenders and two midfielders, that would provide some competition for places for the sometimes complacent Scott Dann. Once best is fit, there's four or five to choose from up front.

Kean allowed Shebby to take on these signings but it now looks certain that we would be much better off with some young skillful players in midfield as none of those high earners have the legs to cope with sides like Cardiff who definately have the correct blend to get automatic promotion.I feel Lowe hasnt got enough skill yet so it is important that we try to bring somepne in to drive our midfield.

Rovers fans are starting to annoy me.
For me the next manager must have high level experience. What happened to Schuster and Clemente? They were all over the application forms last time around according to Shebby and now we look to Phil Taylor? Somewhere someones not telling the truth.

As to Bowyer, he'll be coaching and shouting from the touchline but taking orders from Shabby who will continue to select the team. Enjoy it while it lasts, Gary.
Every game without paying for a manager is cash in the bank for Venkys.
My forecast is that Gary will be "given a chance" till the end of the season, which in reality gives Shabby a chance till the end of the season. If Rovers don't make it, Venkys and Shabby will go.
I've said before the best option for Rovers is that we survive, then Venkys also pull out. If, what a big if, we went up, we'd do a Burnley but Shabb's would have a glory year in the Premiership.
If we went down, and that's still possible, Venkys and Shabby would go and we'd have to rebuild from Div 1.
Survival is the watchword and I am grateful that 6 points against poor teams make that a bit more likely.

OK, here's the plot. Shabby has admitted that he'd love to manage/coach here but hasn't got the qualifications. He's not going to slog through the coaching badges, why bother. Shabby is in charge of transfer policy but that will be ruled by Pune accountants, so he'll enjoy wheeling-dealing and being the centre of attention, it's much more fun than punditry in Malaysia. He'll try to offload high earners by freezing them out as Kean did - the standard coward's tactic.

Bowyer is just what Venkys love. Cheap and a kopout when it comes to havng to make a decision. Bowyer should NEVER be in contention irrespective of whether he beats the bottom of the league, a forest in crisis and a poor Bristol 2nd XI

Unbelievable you Rovers Fans! You win 2 games after just 1 in 10 and you still moan. Maybe the problem with Rovers is not the owners, nor Kean or Berg, nor Shebby or Shaw. Maybe, just maybe, it's the fans!
Talking of which a certain Mr Parkes did a great job for us several times as caretaker, I stress the word several because previous owners and regimes failed to get it right more often than not.
Several times.
If they had got it right all the time we wouldn't be in this mess we would be up there with the Man U's, City and Chelsea's, and clowns like Venky's wouldn't be able to afford us.
Also I have Sky Sports News on at present and Bowyer has quite clearly stated he is happy to act as caretaker but doesn't want the job permanently.
Why should he? The only certain thing about taking over as a manager at any football club is if you have a bad run of results you get sacked.
Just like Tony Parkes he is better off as a respected coach and caretaker ready to step in when needed.

Why not make the granny swindler Hendry the manager ,does anyone know what he actually does anyway at Rovers since Steve Kean left , who is the person Hendry picks up in the Rovers black Merc. drives him to the pub and then the bookies and back these days for his 8,000 quid a week.
Or was Hendry chauffering Steve Kean around part of Kean`s payout agreement from Rovers.

What the fans have got to realise is that Berg and Bowyer have had mostly Kean's players to work with. To actually get two wins on the trot is a minor miracle, long may it continue. There is no reason why it can't be three wins on the bounce. That will work wonders for morale. Don't need a new manager, just need a bit of luck.

Those questioning Bowyer need to give their head a shake !
Our club desperately needs stability if not for the long term with this, but the absolute here and now.
Venky have got this right for once advised by, well, let us say results, and are we not in a results based business ?
The astute, proven manager we all crave for is a dead duck in the water for various reasons that are well and truly highlighted on pages such as these.
I wish for nothing more than BRFC performing to a standard that I have become accustomed to, and that being competitive - whether that is a success or failure is open to the 90 minutes of play ?
Bowyer will have his limits just as any manager who comes in would, but Bowyer has grabbed this situation by the scruff of the neck installed the belief and desire for these players to perform to the best of their training abilities resulting in two wins - 6 for 1 against.
This move in retaining Bowyer is one of the better choices made by our bungling owners as I'm sure this will create stability for the foreseeable future which we all crave for - isn't it ?
Far to many folk's have their own agenda over these matters down at the good ship Ewood rather than seeing what is practical, in my estimation ?
I would never question the loyalty or the intrinsic link of any supporter for our beloved, but I would question the wisdom of some.
Neither do I profess to have the correct solution in my opinion, but at the heart of the matter is seeing something that is worth embracing for the most important element in all of this, and that is the B&W shirt adorned by a crest that supersedes all. I support that in any situation, and these back to back wins are worthy of positive support regardless of the supposed blithe blowing through the corridors of Ewood Park ?
Bowyer as shat in the face of adversity such is his belief in the squad to go out and perform to the level and standard that they have been lauded for since our relegation.
I go into Saturdays game with renewed optimism regardless of the opposition. The plight of the club is there for all to see, but out on the pitch at this time I would say it is worth seeing and supporting under the guy who as appeared to revive some dignity for our beleaguered club and, again I say, shatting in the face of adversity.
Keep on keeping on Mr Bowyer and Co
Common sense as prevailed here whether you loathe Venky and Co or not.
Just a thought folk's ?

Years ago - approx 2001 - life was not good for me , and I worked for an agency . Let's face it , if you have no income , you take what you can get !!
Me . one of my kiddywinks and his mate did a non-stop-40-odd-hour
-job .
Interestingly enough , there were actually approx 100 of us - mostly Chinese students .
We got paid £300 each , cash in hand . Fine by us .
What did we do ?
Started off working at the M.E.N arena - literally from 7pm til 6am .
Treated well - no probs - food , rests , non-alchoholic drinks , all free.
Then - off to Liverpool - Anfield - by coach ,(3 coaches) serving pies and such to the spectators - help yourself .
Then back to Old Trafford -wow- that was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life ! - again serving pies and such from a very high up gantry . We only had to serve while game was NOT on - we were allowed to watch the game - what a vantage point ! I remember tucking into a pie while watching David Beckham and co , thinking to myself , I can't believe I'm being paid for this !!
Next day - we coached to Blackburn Rovers . No food . Nothing to drink - not even water . No breaks . Utterly forbidden to have a smoke break . nor to use the toilets . I am not making this up . Then...find your own way home .
We all refused to work for Rovers again .

It would be madness to take away current management team Gary B and Terry M at this time.
For me, this is not about the Venkys. The fact is that so far the guys (our guys) have got the results and the whole team seem motivated. It can't get any better than that.
I do feel cynical toward the Venkys BUT I am not going to let it cloud my judgement.
