ROVERS COLUMN: Berg needs help from the top
10:04am Thursday 20th December 2012 in Football
YOU couldn’t blame Henning Berg for wondering what he has got himself into.
Just a few months ago he was enjoying earning a living as a pundit for Norwegian TV, now he is attempting to succeed in what, at times, looks like the impossible job.
Henning obviously thought life at Ewood Park would be smoother than it has turned out. He thought the squad was better than it is and believed the owners had learned from their mistakes.
Nine games in and he is already a man under pressure. Some supporters are questioning whether he is the man for the job and speculation is growing about his own mounting frustration.
Rumours about Berg’s future are inevitable after the run Rovers are on at the moment. One win in nine games would put any manager under pressure.
Certain people in India are known to be growing increasingly twitchy about the situation as they start to fear an instant Premier League return is now not on the cards.
Failure to turn around Rovers fortunes before the New Year will almost certainly mean Rovers have to accept promotion is a no-go.
Some will say this means Berg has failed and needs to go and you can’t help but feel Venky’s might agree.
In a way they are right. He would have failed and not getting promoted will mean Venky’s have to dig deep in their pockets to cover what will be massive financial losses.
Would any manager succeed in the current circumstances? You look at a number of factors and it is difficult to see how they would.
Firstly the squad has proved itself to simply be not good enough. I was among those who thought some of the summer signings would do well in the Championship but am the first to admit I was wrong.
The transfer window was a disaster in epic proportions. Out of the 12 players brought in, only striker Jordan Rhodes has proved a success.
Berg can’t be blamed for that. That has to be down to Steve Kean and global advisor Shebby Singh.
The internal problems at Ewood Park have still not disappeared. There is conflict in the corridors of power and no one still has any real idea about who is running the club.
Was Berg the right appointment? At the time, it always looked a gamble with far more experienced candidates out there. But can you imagine Ian Holloway or Mick McCarthy working under Venky’s? They wouldn’t have lasted very long under the current regime.
Berg was the man given the responsibility to turn things around but he needs to be given the environment to stand a chance.
If he is going to fail, let him fail because of his own decisions and mistakes. Not other peoples.
It is very difficult to judge Henning at the moment as this isn’t his squad and I think we all know the club is still a mess from top to bottom.
As for the Christmas party farce. Henning was spot on in refusing to dance on stage with a wig on his head. The person who asked him to should be looking at his own judgement.

Henning Berg knew what the club was like when he took the job and is being paid well so he cannot have any gripes about the situation he now finds himself in. He has to think long and hard as to whether he has taken on a poison chalice or can he deliver - bearing in mind that promotion this season is what has been asked of him by the clueless owners and a foolish board of directors. He accepted this challenge so we will see how it pans out for him.

That's what the headline says, but in my opinion he has more chance of plaiting sawdust than getting money out of Venkys.
My guess he'll have to sell to buy, and their are a lot who need to go if we can find someone foolish enough to buy them.
Anyone with half a brain can see that they've invested NOTHING in their two year ownership. Selling good players to replace them with inferior ones is just recycling money,Jack Walkers legacy.
This will be the 5TH transfer window during their tenure so let us see if they are prepared to put their hands in their pockets this time.

Good and fair article. Anyone calling for Henning out after just nine games is either a troll or has no understanding of the mess that Kean left of the squad. Even an experienced manager would have struggled with the quality of our midfield. Henning wouldn't have been my choice of manager but once appointed he deserves at least a season before we can judge how good he is.

I don't think you're the right man for the job Henning and you should've taken your own advice and steered well clear. That said, you deserve a medal working under the absolute shambles that is Venky's and the ar5licking yes men working under them.

Berg went into this job fully aware of the situation. If he doesn't like it he should do the best thing, resign and tell the world all about it.
Just out of interest, what is a sufficient amount of time to give him to start getting results? 5 games, end of the season? Another season after this?
Do you hand a guy with his abysmal record funds and precious time to make changes that could damage us further? Or do you recognise that its just not working and appoint somebody with EXPERIENCE before it's too late.
People keep slagging Venky's off, but lets look at it on the surface. They appear to be taking a back seat in the running of the club and have delegated powers to people in the UK (which most people wanted them to do), they have appointed 3 people all with experience in football to run the club, two of which claim to be local 'supporters' (admittedly not the ideal people, but they are experienced administrators nonetheless), they have undoubtedly sanctioned several 'big name' signings over the summer and allowed us to retain the majority of last season's so-called premier league squad. Who knows what the financial cost of all that might be but there's no indication at present that they are risking the club's future with it.
No wonder they think that there is nothing wrong.
The problem appears to be Shebby Singh, and that Venkys are again trusting the wrong person to run the club. If they had left it with Shaw we would have got a proper manager, but because they think that Shebby is a great footballing guru, they have allowed him to go out and appoint a cheap yes man.

As for McCarthy, Holloway, Freedman and Appleton doing better than Henning, it is worth noting that Martin O'Neil won something like 8 or this first 10 matches at Sunderland, then won something like 2 out of the next 25. When Henning took over we were in a false position, even under Black we were dire to watch despite winning a couple of matches. It's pathetic the short-term mentality of football fans nowadays.
Since the club has been taken over by the Venky's it has been destroyed both on and off the pitch yet some 'fans' expect Henning (or any other manager) to turn it around after 9 matches!

It is clear that Venkys are despised, there's no way back and happily Singh has run out of sympathetic apologists - no one is offering anymore a pathetic "at least he tells it as it is" line. The man has been exposed as a motor mouth charlatan, cashing in the cheques for as long as it lasts.
Equally clear is the majority of sympathy for Berg, largely a legacy of his fine career as a player here and also because he's a decent guy.
My best wish is that he stays longer than Venkys. Beyond it is doom and gloom.

Everything at Ewood is toxic, the owners don't have a clue, what I think about Shebby isn't printable, the higher management structure is laughable at best, downright incompetent at worst.
Then we come to the coaching staff and players.
I think someone should check that the coaching staff actually have the correct qualifications.
As for the players? I have never seen a team like this playing for Rovers in 40 odd years, terrified of their own shadows they fall apart time after time in a league that is basically made up of teams with nothing much more than well organised, hard working players, I haven't seen anything more than that so far.
With a bit of luck the world will end tomorrow and put us out of our misery.

Again I say Berg is not a yes man... but given the cr@p he has to work with could you do any better? i seriously doubt I could.
Sorry but sympathy is fast running out for Berg. I don't care if he served us well as a player.

I also heard from countless people that because Shebby was put in charge here, they did not interfere with his decision to appoint Henning although they were greatly concerned by his choice.

MM Ipswich
Holloway CP
Freedman Bolton
Anderston? Blackpool
All took over clubs, all doing a dam sight better than HB, why, IMO there is no in fighting at these clubs, NO GLOBAL ADVISOR, NO press officer who never talks to any one,
With this lot running our ship we are sunk!
I was not taking a pop at you only stating my thoughts, I do not think you or anyone supports the Venkys/Shebby/Agnew if they do they must be Dingles.
I have nothing against HB but his record is poor and Shebby IMO is the one who is running the club really, so again god help us.
Knowing Venkys, there's no way they would sack him.

He gave us our proudest day in living memory when the Premier League trophy was raised, his family, the trust he set up, destroyed everything and sold us out to the highest bidder irrespective of their credentials.
The Venky's are not stupid, they simply have no understanding of what Blackburn Rovers actually mean to us, the fans, how can they? The concept is totally alien to them.
They live in a different country with a different culture, anyone who has had to deal with Indians on a business level will tell you the same, they do it their way, there is always a lack of urgency, something football cannot tolerate.
But they don't know that, they simply do not understand the concept.
And that is why due diligence has not been satisfied.
Blackburn Rovers are simply a business investment to them, nothing more, nothing less.

I remember an interview on SSN after HB was appointed; Shaw said he wasn't the man he wanted - he wanted someone with more experience. Fair enough, but having appointed him he should have given him his full backing.
His "support" was underwhelming; you don't hire a manager then say you wanted someone else.

Get a grip the lot of you and face the facts.... until those clowns in India sell the club to decent owners with proven credentials , this once proud club will stumble from one disaster to the next and in the meantime a lot more people will stick their noses in the trough and suck what money or asset is stick left in the club.

From watching the matches its 100% clear to me that its not the players fault. The tactics, defending & attacking are SHOCKING. The substitutions Berg makes come in around 80mins when we are 1 or 2 goals down. Cardiff pressed us continually whilst we were 4-5 yards off our man when defending, thats not the players fault, thats Bergs fault, and even though it was obvious to the crowd what Cardiff were doing to be so dominant, Berg didn't change it, he stood there and did nothing as per normal.
To be frank, Berg was a shambolic appointment, the faster we get rid, the faster we arrest the league-slide.
