Berg responds to Christmas party reports

BLACKBURN Rovers have released a statement in response to national newspaper reports about Monday night's Christmas party.

It has been claimed that manager Henning Berg 'stormed' out of Monday's party after being asked to don a wig and dance on stage.

In a statement, Berg said: “On Monday evening, the club arranged its official Christmas Party for all employees and staff.

"We have many hard-working employees and this was an opportunity for them to relax and enjoy themselves after what has been a difficult year.

“After the dinner I was asked to go to the stage, which I was happy to do, believing I would be asked a few questions or maybe judge a competition.

"Instead I was asked to do things which were not the right things for me to do as the manager, considering our league position and form.

"I did not want to do it and went back to my table. Later, I left the event at around 9.30pm, as planned, and drove home. The players left straight after dinner and no alcohol was consumed.”

I applaud Henning for seeing the potential for photos being made public and used against him.

The real question for me is, who leaked the mail story to the press. ( someone with very good press contacts as it appeared very quickly)
And what is our PR director and pr company doing letting stories like this appear.....unless it suits there agenda perhaps?

And I have no sympathy whatsoever for Berg. Whilst he is clearly fighting a losing battle, it is a battle that he entered into willingly, with absolutely no credentials to do so. This episode, either illustrates his weakness as a leader or confirms that he is a figure of ridicule for the staff, as well as the fans.

For goodness sake, people are having christmas parties of some type from work all over the country despite grim times. Im sorry if you cant afford any christmas celebration with your work mates but expecting Blackburn Rovers not to have their annual bash is plain ridiculous. How is team spirit etc ever going to improve if everything positive is cancelled to appease some fans?

'absolutely no credentials' is a bit harsh. he has been a manager previously, and has also played at the top level for a number of years. limited experience maybe, but 'absolutely no credentials'...?
and surely this episode indicates some amount of strenght, rather than weakness. he seems to have said, 'yep i'll come up on stage and join in...' and then when he was asked to do something he thought inappropriate, he said 'absolutely not'. weakenss would have been caving in and being snapped wearing a santa hat and a look of embarassment / dejection on his face.

How the hell is Berg expected to lead and manage a group of players when they can all remember him dancing up and down like a clown with a sock on his head. I am a manager and you need to command a degree of distance from your staff. Berg played the scenario perfectly, show your face at the Christmas party, stay sober then make a dignified exit and let your staff get on with it. Berg was looking to maintain the respect his role as manager dictates. Apologies Henning but this shower show no understanding or respect for our club and its heritage in their antics, sick of repeating myself but yet again it has to be said, it wouldn't have happened on John Williams watch. I don't think any genuine Rovers fan would be dismayed if Berg walked after this humiliation that very quickly hit the press.

I understand your perspective but my point is that if the team and staff had the appropriate level of respect for him they would not have put him in that position in the first place.

Just a thought. Your 225 pounds season ticket will pay the wage of a 50k a week player or manager for less than 1 hour . 45 minutes to be exact.. Or put another way, You need to sell 11,555 season tickets to pay 1 x 50k per week salary.

And supporters wonder why football is in a mess !

You can not condem a man for taking his job seriously. This a massive task he has taken on along with all the finance, fans and his reputation at stake. Would you like to act like big pals and a clown around with people who stroll out every game and go through the motions just for the pay packet and at the same time are destroying the club. If we had just been promoted and won the Championship Title then that would be a different matter. But no we are going in the opposite direction therefore Henning get the idiots sorted out as they deserve, you did the right thing it's just a pitty you are not being supported properly by the shower that employ you. Please stick at it and survive as they are not capable of picking any suitable manager or giving him the correct support as the club is riddled with all the wrong people. Get some results and the fans will get behind you no matter what.

He needs to go and Shebby the Snake needs to follow him.
I understand your perspective but my point is that if the team and staff had the appropriate level of respect for him they would not have put him in that position in the first place.
I stand by the credentials piece. A failed management stint in Norway is no preparation for a task of this magnitude.
Merry Christmas
the guy has played under alex ferguson and kenny dalglish he will know a trick or 2 lets give him a chance any manager would struggle with this lot of lazy over paid average players

Ray. I don’t think you will be paying the players wages as your £225.00 season ticket is for you to see the team play ( even though it is not good viewing at time moment). I am sure the venky chicken family will be more than happy if you was to pay maybe just one of our underperforming gems what do you think

I
Spot on.

I think people really over-inflate the value of the financial impact the season ticket makes these days. Its a drop in the ocean compared to the wages that get paid.

Right now its more important to fill the terraces for moral reasons if anything.

Let's face it PR at the club has been atrocious since Venkys took over. The club is rotten from the core. Berg was right with his original statement whilst he was a pundit but he should of backed up his words with action and never have taken on the job, so he only has himself to blame.

If Berg does go, and I don't think anyone could blame him if he did, we would be dead in the water, if we aren't already.

Because the message that sends out to any potential manager is "Don't go there".

We will end up with a yes man manager from the coaching staff when what we really need is someone to prize Shebby's claws from around Rovers throat..

You guys who are grumbling about Berg need to step back and think.

There isn't an experienced manager worth his salt who would want managing Rovers under Venky's on his CV, he would never work again.

I may not like BFS but he isn't stupid, he saw what was coming and engineered his way out of his contract.

I think that it is about time the Lancashire Telegraph started acting responsibly and stopped publishing this sort of drivel - it may sell papers but it is not helping Rovers at all. Talk about a storm in a teacup. As we all know, the media in general is incapable of being sensible or responsible, and this article is typical of the twaddle put out by this newpaper. I bet Henning Berg does not read this type of thing in Norway, and he does not to have to defend such stupidity when he is trying to get the team sorted out.

I shall not bother to use this website or forum until we get some intelligent reporting.

One last point for readers to consider. I do not care what Colin Hendry has or has not done in his private life, and there has been far too much tripe on here that has been downright malicious and probably a cause for libel action in law. However, I thought - and I may wrong because I do not work at Ewood Park - that he was recruited to sort out the defence. Now judging by the last two games either he is not telling the players the right things, or if he is reading this, to be fair to you Mr Hendry, perhaps what you are saying it is not staying between the players ears. Either way, I have seen better defending in the conference. We cannot hope to succeed all the time the defence is shipping goals like we do. If we can sort the defence the rest should take care of itself.

if Berg left on his own accord or not - then the job at Rovers becomes almost untenable and unattractive and we would be looking at lower league applicants for our next manager and not the so called big and familiar names that were mentioned a couple of months ago. Doesn't bear thinking about - instead of approaching Man Utd for loan players we would be asking Halifax Town or Maidstone.......Back Berg!
Glynners you are spot on. The same deluded supporters called for the removal of Big Sam two years ago as we were not playing "Barcelona Style". The same deluded supporters trilled out lists of suitable managers, lists which included Guardiola, Hoddle, Benitez, Hughes, OGS, Schuster et al. The same deluded supporters who believed all we needed was a decent manager to galvanise the players we have now. It is a pity FR now uses the phrase "does not bear thinking about", because if ever "thinking about" was relevant it was two years ago. This has nothing to do with the abilities of Big Sams replacement(s) - it has everything to do with the biggest delusion of them all - that we were big and mighty enough to sack the likes of Big Sam at all.
Thanks for clearing that up Bazzer.....there's me thinking the demise of BRFC was down to Venkeys thier advisors and the management team they employed during thier tenure....you've certainly opened my eyes and made me realise it's all the fault of the "deluded" supporters as you call them.... Keep on hoofing ;-)
I do wish you would read things carefully and correctly. Can you point out where exactly I state the supporters removed Big Sam? My memory is that a loud and fair few called for and then applauded his dismissal.
Now we all know that you are a bit touchy, but careful reading should be a priority.

Bazzer, you really have to get out of living in the past now and get back to the future (if there is one)! Although I ain't got any fancy flying delorean cars to get you there - I am sure there must be a horse drawn carriage or tram passes by the end of your cobbled street under the gas lamps? :)

Actually you know as well as I do that all the many problems that we have now do NOT have their roots in the fact that a few thousand Rovers fans openly displayed there dislike of the sorry excuse for football under BFS.

The root cause of ALL our sorrow is the sale of the Rovers to the Venkys.

Williams and Finn going, BFS, Samba, Nelson, Relegation, Kean... in fact everything we suffered from and are still suffering from stems from when the Venkys became owners.

This fiasco just shows what a shambles Singh and Venkys have turned our club into. Totally unprofessional in every aspect.
If Berg was a self thinking manager allowed to do it his way then fair enough but he's not, venkys & singh are pulling his strings and like many managers outside football desperate but not management material will @rse lick their way up.
2 decent managers I've worked for never needed to use the "I'm a manager" line. They commanded respect by their people skills and that naturally distanced them but in a respectful way, not by setting barriers.
You're way is more like Captain Mainwaring off Dads Army. A jumped up little know it all , desperate for recognition but who commanded no respect and whose underlings ripped the p1ss out of.
Todays managers are box ticking compliant figure jugglers , saying what satisfys those who ask the questions but with little or no substance to back it up
