Rovers boss Berg insists keeper is still in his plans
9:34am Monday 17th December 2012 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
HENNING Berg insists Paul Robinson can still have a future at Blackburn Rovers after dropping the former England number one for “footballing reasons” on Saturday.
Robinson was stunned when rookie stopper Jake Kean was selected in place of him at Bloomfield Road, throwing further question marks over his future following Berg’s pursuit of Brad Friedel just a few weeks ago.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands Rovers will resume their interest in attempting to secure Friedel’s return from Tottenham Hotspur next month, but Berg is adamant former England keeper Robinson is still very much in his plans.
He said: “It was purely a footballing decision.
“Paul has been playing through the season. It was a tight decision, a difficult one to make.
“Jake has not played too much but I have seen him training and with the results we have had, given him a chance, and maybe that could make a difference.
“In the end I thought he had a decent game.
“I couldn’t complain about the goals, he couldn’t do much about them and, apart from that, he didn’t have too much to do.
“They had a free kick and a cross or two but they didn’t put him under that much pressure.
“He (Robinson) is always going to be disappointed. I would be surprised if he wasn’t, that is natural.
“Of course he was disappointed but that is the game of football.
“Most definitely it is not the end for him. We need all our goalkeepers.
“He has been playing every game up until this game. Jake played this game and we will see who plays the next one.”
The Rovers boss was also quick to insist a couple of Rovers’ old guard still have an Ewood Park future.
David Dunn and Morten Gamst Pedersen were left as unused substitutes at Bloomfield Road, despite Rovers’ dire second half efforts.
“David Dunn has not had many training sessions with us so how long he would have lasted I don’t know.” said Berg.
“Morten is in the squad, he has played two games and had one or two subs. He is here, he is a Blackburn player.
“I expect him to try his best in training and then when he gets his chance in the games.
“I want them to be disappointed, at the same time they have to have the respect for the team and we have other players who can come in.
“One thing is to be disappointed but we can only play with 11.”

We know he wont last but at least he may well create a goal to give us some breathing space.
Bergs emphasis is on youth - is that Venkys way of cutting the wage bill I ask?

As for Berg, he needs to be given January to make changes(bearing in mind we probably have not much money). Best has to come back, some players need shipping out and replacements bringing in, then we can judge him. At the moment he's playing Kean's signings.
The squad as a whole looks unfit, Robinson being the worst example. I've more or less accepted we won't go up this season.

en situation again? If I were Robinson reading this article, I would be looking for my next job. I read Salgado criticising Berg for dropping Robinson. He said that dropping important senior players during a difficult spell affects team spirit and he wasnt surprised that players werent totally committed. Berg is more or less saying that having a different goalkeeper might change results. What about the defence and midfield Henning? Maybe if that was improved, Robinson wouldnt be left so exposed. The whole thing at Rovers hasnt changed in my view. Just a different face

Well play them at their own game, boycott the lot, home and away (they get a slice of away ticket sales don't they?). No fans, no merchandise money & basically they'll have a product no one wants. Club is devalued, goes cheap to owners who care. And don't worry the fans will return then.
Fight fire with fire.
The lot of em will loose their jobs and their cushy numbers cos none of em are worth caring for.......
Singh- Liar
Hendry- Scum who should be in prison
Agnew- Who?
Shaw- Bent as a nine bob note, ask any PNE fans
Berg- Nice guy, out of his depth but singing to owners tune
Senior players- Made enough money, can retire now, I'll shed no tears
If this means bringing the club to its knees, so be it, the phoenix will rise from the ashes. Time to forget loyalty, the vermin that own the club have none.

Before appointing berg, more than one potential manager RULED THEMSELVES OUT. Why? I believe that it's because they were told they wouldn't have full control over footballing matters. Hence the appointment of a novice, that they can MANIPULATE.
Whilst berg was working as a TV pundit, after being sacked from his last job, he stated on live television: 'There are no real managers with credibility who would accept a job like that.' I guess he was right.

for me, robbo has been at least shaky for a while now, and i don't think he could claim to be at peak fitness. we have a young lad that seems to be performing in training, so it could easily be the right decision to make the change. as stated, he didn't personally to a huge amount wrong on saturday.
and it doesn't make sense to say that berg should focus on the defence first. he should be able to consider the makeup of all areas of the squad. the problem with the defence is that we don't have a huge amount of decent cover and the existing unit is weak. on top of that, we have a central midfield that is hugely problematic without much cover also. so making wholesale changes there might be nice, but is almost impossible at the moment.
given that much of what we all feel is wrong with the squad is a lack of energy and commitment, maybe the manager showing he is willing to drop under-performing players is a good thing.

I asked on here 2 weeks ago the question " is Robinson really a good keeper". My answer was and is no, and if HB agrees with me then I for one just see that as a valid opinion and an ok change in the team.
Its all part of a new manager sorting himself and his team out and trying various options.Promotion this time was never a realistic aim so let him get on with the job, support the team and the manager and look at it more critically this time next season when hopefully we will be in better shape.

As frustrating as it is, I believe most fans don't expect Henning to be able to wave a magic wand and have a balanced side of happy, fit professionals. It will take time to sort the mess out.
The worrying thing right now is that it seems Berg is being put under pressure to change his back-room team. It's Henning's decision and they should only be there to support him. It's tempting to think a clear out of the old guard will help but we need to trust Berg on this.

It's a rerun of Tim Flowers or Shay Given - a good keeper clearly on the way down or promising lad who needs a run out.
We made the wrong decision last time, perhaps Berg has that in mind.
Robbo going to West Ham to punt it down field for Andy C makes sense, lowers the wage bill and gives a chance to a youngster.

a) no left back
b) no box to box midfield player
c) no natural right sided forward player
d) no attacker who can hold the ball up (ok, we have to see Best yet)
e) a lot of old, very slow, immobile, ageing players susceptible to injury
f) no decent crosser of a ball / dead ball specialist (except Pedersen - see e above !)
Kean & Venky's between them systematically got rid of all the best players we had (too numerous to mention) and all our best backroom / admin staff in order to reduce the wage bill and satisfy their 'consultants'. All this with no experience or a clue how to run a football club.
I expected Rovers to struggle this season - I even contemplated a bet that we'd get relegated, - Berg has a big task. He must be given time. Write this season off, don't get relegated, and try to kick on next season.

On Robinson, the worst goalkeeper in the premier league last year by a country mile starts this season carrying more weight than the last.
Stats don't lie, shots on target to goals conceded means we should have kept Bunn and let Robbo go in close season. But all on here getting glassy eyed. The reason we got relegated are still pulling on the shirt. Berg needs to sort this Kean mess out,

Poor Jake.. Probably needs to get his name changed by deed poll before he gets a complex. I thought he was excellent against pool, especially seeing it was the first time he'd played first team footy this season.
Quite happy to see him replace BFG Robinson, for all his loyal service. He's paid to do a job and now he's not up to it anymore. We keep getting sentimental about these things and then expect miracles from managers working with geriatric squads. It isnt going to happen. Robbo, Murphy, Etuhu,MGP and even Gomes need to make way for younger, faster players who can play decent football for 90 mins and these players just don't have the legs anymore and likely have salaries that equate to more than the combined salaries of the rest of the squad.
We need to cut costs, we need younger players. It doesn't require a genius to work it out. Shebby decided on the opposite. A rookie manager managing experienced players. Most others would have done the opposite. An experienced manager could quite easily take a young side and turn into a winning team. We have a rookie trying to manage experienced players and people wonder why none of them are playing for him.
Still don't believe Berg is the right man, his substitutions baffle me as do some of his lineups, i'm sure fitness/injuries tie his hands at times and maybe he's looking at the next match and trying to work out who would be better rested. But we arent winning so his intuition in that scenario isnt working anyway.
Won't be calling for Berg out, but come January transfer if doesn't make the defensive and midfield changes that are clearly needed, then it will be blindingly obvious he needs to go as more defeats start racking up and relegation looks yet even more likely.

I said at the time John Williams had his contract terminated - to satisfy the avarice of Agent Anderson who wanted him out of the way to fulfil his sinister plan - that Venky's would live to rue the day. That day is here.
My thoughts on what is wrong at Ewood are well documented and I have no reason to go through them all again. Suffice to say EVERYTHING is wrong from top to bottom. It is pointless calling for Venky’s to go, or for a new manager to be appointed. Where will we be then?
It appears Venky’s are here to stay – for the foreseeable future, anyway. Mrs Desai and the Rao brothers have that future, perhaps our very existence as we know it, in the palm of their hands and in my view they can make only one decision that will save us – reappoint John Williams and Tom Finn, whatever it takes to do it.
I know many will say ‘not a chance’. But they have GOT to make it happen. John knows this club inside out. He knows a lot of what has happened and what he doesn’t know he will quickly find out from past and present members of staff. And Venky’s will need to lay bare their souls, be open with him and fully explain why they have acted with such folly for so long.
If they cannot do it themselves, get someone to do it for them. Someone with heart and soul in the club who could sit down and tempt John and Tom back - on their terms. Maybe Robert Coar, ex-directors or chairmen, Ian Battersby, Wayne Wild, anyone who could broker it. Anyone.
John will know immediately what needs to be done. Venky’s must put their trust in him, back his decisions and give him complete authority to rebuild our once-proud club as fast as he can and restore the stability we once enjoyed.
That one decision – which would be their only correct one in two years of carnage – would set us on the road to recovery. I doubt anyone else could do it.
If Venky’s cannot pull it off, heaven help us.

I personally think that Robinson has been getting too much stick recently
Can anybody really suggest that our terrible form has been down to him?
Look at the goals on Saturday, the last thing we needed was another experienced player being dropped from the team!
Robinson can help organise the back four, more so than a young keeper like Kean can.
I find it incredible that Berg dropped Robinson and yet starts with players like Dann and especially Etuhu
Very unimpressed with Berg so far, it takes him far too long to make changes and when he does they are puzzling and ineffective
Why cant he get it right for the start of a match? How can he keep playing Etuhu?
He appears to be clueless and there is certainly no sign of any improvement
In fact we are going backwards
The players have no motivation or confidence and that stems from the manager who hardly comes across as inspiring
I cant see any improvement on the horizon with this lot in charge
There is nobody with any credibility left at the club
Just an empty gloomy shell of a club, run by buffoons

i'm not sure you can be so arbitrary to suggest that dropping senior players is a bad thing. for example, a young'un could easliy come in and inspire a revival by playing without fear of consequence.
