Berg calls for Blackburn Rovers not to panic
10:15am Monday 10th December 2012 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
Henning Berg
HENNING Berg has called for everyone at Blackburn Rovers to ‘keep their heads’ after insisting his side are not a ‘million miles’ from their Premier dream.
Friday night’s miserable 4-1 home defeat to Championship leaders Cardiff City leaves Berg with just one win in his eight games as Rovers boss, but the Ewood manager believes prom-otion is still a realistic goal.
Berg (pictured left) was quick to admit his side have to improve all over the pitch after a third straight home loss left Rovers in 13th, four points from the play-off places.
He said: “The target is still promotion.
“Of course we have put our-selves in a little bit more difficulty than we would have liked.
“A few weeks ago I thought we were looking to build on the Hudd-ersfield and Peterborough perfor-mances, and we were not able to do that.
“Yes we are disappointed with the result, yes we are disappointed with some of the performances, but we are not a million miles away in that we played the league leaders in a tight and even game, football wise that ended not an even game in terms of the result.
“There are not that many things we need to do to make sure we win football matches.
“No one has ever said it will be easy but we just have to make sure we keep our heads, do the right things.”
Mark Hudson gave Cardiff a deserved half time lead on Friday night before Josh King levelled matters with his first Rovers' goal just before half time.
It proved false hope though as goals from Craig Bellamy, Joe Mason and Kim Bo-Kyung inflicted Rovers' heaviest defeat of the season.
Berg said: “We are disappointed to lose another game at home but Cardiff were the better team all over even if not quite as much as the scoreline suggests”, said Berg. “You can't have any complaints.
“They were more experienced than us, they had by far better finishing and they defended better. That was the key.
“We were not happy with the way we defended. We can defend much better and also the way we used the ball in the first half is way off to where we want to be.
“We can play better than this. There is a reason why Cardiff are doing well but I don't think they were a million miles better than us but they were in the most important areas.
“They looked a bit more experienced, a little bit more solid and they played at a higher tempo than we did.
“I think we pushed for it in the second half. Colin Kazim-Richards did well when he came on and played like we want to see every time he is on the pitch.
“If he can do that he is a good player. I thought Josh King worked hard all game and got his goal but apart from that we can improve a lot.”
Rovers' recent run of results has led to some calling for a return to the heart of defence for unused substitute Gael Givet.
Berg said: “I know Gael is a good option and I know he has played really well earlier.
“He was injured when I came and to be fair to Scott and Grant, they have played well together. In the last game against Burnley I thought they were magnificent.
“But on Friday's showing, I know both of them can do better. If Givet is a better option, we will see, because I know he is a good option, there is no doubt about that.
“I know Scott and Grant usually play well as well.”
Meanwhile Rovers are continuing to assess potential changes to the backroom staff.

We got stomped on in the first half and near the end they were scoring for fun!
Found the Kean book of positives did you Henning?
I'd rather you kept with telling it straight as you did on Friday night personally.

I think both Dann and Hanley especially are the root cause of our problems, we need some decent centre backs asap, Givet and someone like Matt Upson who should be available on loan from stoke would do a better job.
Also Palacios or david vaughan from sunderand could do a job for us in midfield, all loans that are available in January, these players are needed straight away in January because if we leave it till the end of the month a play off spot WILL be out of reach!

Can't help but think that Berg has been shafted by the gradual establishment of a WEIRD squad and an appalling set of coaching staff.
Our attacking football *gulp* was good against Cardiff (obviously taking poor finishing out of the equation, which is symptomatic of the wider issues at our club). But our defense and centre mid needs some investment.
Palacios would be ideal, and we should look to bag a good centre half from a lesser championship side.
Also, get Hendry the **** out of here.

Yes Kean sold off one of the best defenses in the premiership. and bought in rubbish in the hope that we could score more than we would conceed.
Olson is not natural in a right back. We need solid central defense, As a defender I would have expected Berg to have started with the obvious weaknesses. Get Givet back, and try and get another Salgardo.
Then get whatever we can for the Fulham muppets, neither deserve to wear blue & white.
Finally Henning please answer one question that has been driving me mad. If a player is fit enough to sit on the bench, why not make them start?
Kazim Richards, Rochina, Nunes, Gomez, even Pederson are better than the second string you are starting with.

Robinson is going in Jan so I do hope that Friedel does sign for us, he is still fantastic at 41. Another rumour starting is that we want to sign Wilson Palacios? I mean that would be a phenomenal signing but not quite sure that one will happen. If it does it'll be another loan. None the less, our midfield would already go up a few notches with him in there.
If Southampton offer £6m for Dann, then take it and run, some good Spanish/Italian defenders are out there at a good price and much lower wages than English players. Technically better too. There are better defenders than Dann and Hanley out there, sorry.

must improve and improve quicky, don't think that any realistic rovers supporter believed that rovers were automatic promotion prospects. i thought at best we could possibly have scraped into the play-offs....but at the moment that seems like a remote prospect.
there is a lot to sort out and in the last few games berg may well have selected jack walker's statue in centre midfield for all the movement we are getting out of it.
the saving grace is that it is a crazy division where a few wins can project you up the league - but equally losses look very worrying.
interesting that it was said by somebody "this squad will frighten to death other teams in this division"...well, the other teams seem to be hiding their fear pretty well.

Berg will struggle with these and do we really think there will be more money available to him in January nah he will have to sell and who would buy any of our players at a gud rate we have no assets in any of our players now other than Rhodes and with our down hill i bet we would struggle to get back what we paid for him .Real hope the owners are doing things for the best but i suspect we will have to have either 2 more seasons struggling to get in playoff or even maybe a relegation threat before this sorry mess is sorted .

Rochina should be in the centre of midfield, I hope he gets a chance there. He is the only player who can open up a team, no pass side to side like Ethehu, Murphy and Lowe. Ethehu should just sit infront of the back 4 and give protection.

Let's hope for a few changes to the backroom staff and playing personal in the new year. This might breathe a new fight in to the team. If we get ourselves organised and get the team fighting, we still have a chance of a top 6 finish. A hard working, well organised team with a proven goalscorer will get you out of this league.
In my opinion, our defence is strong enough. Granted there are way too many stupid mistakes being made but I do believe that we have the right personel. Hanley has been a sensation this season! I genuinely don't think that our midfield helps out of defence at all. Replace Murphy and Etuhu with 2 hardworking midfielders (one defensive minded player) Pedersen should be a permanent fixutre on the left simply for his work ethic, crosses and quality at deadball situations. Maybe King could be the man to provide the pace on the right and cut inside? I would genuinely rather have Mokoena and Andrews in midfield than these 2, and that's saying something! Etuhu and Murphy should be ashamed of themselves - they don't care about the club, they are simply looking for a final payday.

No they don't. Dann has been a liability since he arrived and while I always thought Hanley wasn't Premier standard he doesn't look Championship standard either.
Two new centre halves needed in January I'm afraid. And then two new centre midfielders instead of past it Murphy and lead legs Etuhu.
Although Berg not doing himself any favours not willing to blame him just yet. The same real problem is still there and has been for two years and our ongoing decline is unlikely to end until they have gone i.e the owners and those numb nuts they keep appointing to "run" the club. They neither know how to run a football club nor care.

I know some of you commented on the accounts last week and some of you thought they "wern't as bad as expected" - THEY WERE A NIGHTMARE!
If you look at the deeper accounts, not just what was brought up in the LT (the BRFCS #50 podcast is a MUST listen too for all you keyboard (Rovers) warriors as it goes through the accounts at length. -
1 - We are (approx) £20m in debt - not now debt free, as Venkys said, only earlier this year.
2 -we made a small profit after selling (approx) £23m of players (assets) - so in reality we LOST (in real terms) approx £18m.
3 - Player wages to turnover (at July 1st 2012) is 92.2% and, today is around 120% of turnover - complete and UTTER MADNESS.
4 - The auditors could not verify a £3.4m "hole" in our accounts (and stated as such). BRFCS beleive it could be for the purchase of Nevilles house but then (under UK law) it should be shown under the "assets" section of the accounts - it is not.
5 - Every time the Venky brothers come to watch the team play it costs the club (in costs incurred by them) MORE than the club takes in its entire gate receipts for that match - YES, YOU READ IT RIGHT - complete LUNACY !!
6 - If we fail to go up Venky themselves state in the accounts that we do not have enough revenue streams going forwards to sustain the club - its written in black and white in those accounts.
That said, Venkys have drafted a letter from Venkys (India) which state they can cover those costs - however, I have been informed that these type of letter are normal with parent companies and are often lodged at companies house with subsiduary accounts but that this letter is meaninless and totally UNINFORCEABLE (is anyone so niave to believe Mrs D is going to write a cheque to Rovers out of her own money for £40m or £50m ???
7- Income generated by the commercial department has dropped from £12m in the last year of the trusts ownership to an estimated revenue this year of just £1.2m (approx)
8 - If (when) we fail to go up by summer 2013 our debt is estimated to rise to around £60m - yes £60m !!
9 - The depts to summer 2014 will continue to rise at an alarming rate as players like DM, DE, NG will not be able to be off-loaded.
This is obviously UNSUSTAINABLE and Venkys HAVE to start reducing costs ASAP - starting in January when people like Dann, Dunn, MGP, etc etc HAVE to be sold/released to try to ensure the long term survival of the club.
Doing nothing apart from hoping for a promotion is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
And for all those people slagging off BRSIT - think on - if we carry on losing money at this rate then that £3m in pledges maybe the ONLY thing keeping us between the administrator and a winding up order !

Ewood Park needs to be a fortress like it was a few seasons ago if we have any chance of promotion and obviously were not heading in the right direction tactically and mentally. Our players are scared to stick a foot in where as a few seasons ago we were top of the foul league in the prem...we need that mentality back bully the opposition off the ball and always close down
Need to bring a midfielder in who likes to drive the play forward and actually feed Rhodes at the minute he has nothing to run on to except the odd cross. Get Nunes (he impressed me alot at the beginning of the season) and Givet back in the squad as well...I'm keeping the faith we can go up but we need changes !!

Gates need to go UP not DOWN. The very survival of this club depends once again on the fans to support the team, to be VOCAL at Venkys at what needs to change. I've written to Venkys countless times, emails, social media and even a letter to India. I've spoken personally to people at Rovers to get my voice heard and even called on LET and Radio Lancashire to voice our concerns.
One thing I will NEVER EVER do is desert my club as many have done expecting someone else to pick up the pieces. I am one of the BRSIT naysayers, but only in part. I think the Trust being there to at least try to salvage the club from the unthinkable is good. What 'I dont subscribe to is the willingness of a section of very vocal fans who would rather boycott and let the club sink into administration so they can live their dream of a fan owned club.
That is extreme madness, much more so than even expecting Venkys to finance any shortfall. We need the fans back, both for morale and financial reasons. End of.

They are cashing in and stitching the fans up, wake up and see!
I cannot for the life of me see how the hell we will go up this year and if we don't, then next year is financial meltdown.
Sad news as that is, this is the reality of the situation. We have been well and truly sold up the river by Venkys and their entourage.

owd nick says...
The main issue though is midfield, usually made up of a couple of inexperienced attack minded players, perm any two from four, and two overpaid imports who don't appear to have the heart or head for a battle.
And in this division you have to battle.
Once our opponents have won that midfield battle the defence is left wide open, and that's what has happened in the last 3 home games (it was happening before but we were sort of getting away with it).
We need experience and commitment on the field, a keeper, centre half and one or two midfielders who are willing and able to fight for the cause the moment the transfer window opens.
Berg is right, if we panic now we are dead in the water, anyone can see that the players don't like playing at Ewood, the atmosphere is pretty grim, not downright unpleasant like last year, but "wrong".
Berg needs to bring players in that are not poisoned by what has gone on so far and can slot right into the team straight away.
If he can't or isn't allowed to do that then it will be time to panic.

Berg's "don't panic" is addressed to Venkys and Shabby, who has been thankfully silent of late(is he still in the country ?).
Cardiff are a good team, Rovers are not.
Dann is useless, he was too close to the sub for the third goal, and Robbo has always been vulnerable to cross shots as for the fourth, he seems to get down too late.
If Bergo sells Dann, moves Gael the Warrior into the starting 11 at his best position, CH, gets Friedel in place of Robbo, whose big boot down field is tailor made for Sam and Caroll and plays himself in midfield instead of Et tu Brute, finds someone with more mobility than Murphy - surely that cannot be too difficult - the ship can be stabilised.
I'll be happy if we finish midtable and make a grand push next year, whether we have the finances for that, or Venkys have the stomach for that, is another matter.
Bergo does a Souey, that's the only realstic prospect.

New backroom staff, an experienced assistant manager and coaching staff could still make a huge difference to this squad, dont forget up front we now have Best in January hopefully, Rhodes whose already showed us what hes capable of if he gets the service, King and CK who are showing potential and no doubt could amaze with the right coaching and fitness, Vukevic and Rochina who have shown sparks of brilliance at times. Lowe, Dunn, Henley, Givet are decent players lacking only coherent formation and direction.
Nunes, the other Portuguese players, some who we've never seen, so we cant just assume they're ALL crap and probably dont add to the wage bill together as much as a certain leader, theres got to be at least one or two good mid/def players in there!
WHERE IS BRUNO?
Etuhu and Murphy may have been expensive mistakes but can still be brought on as impact players as we're stuck with them until end of next season, I suppose, as can Gomes. If we can sort defence and "export" out some of our baggage (seeya Dann, Hanley!) we only need two maybe three signings in January to complete the squad.
So the question really is going to be once these backroom staff come in is: Is Berg the man for the Job?
I hope for our sakes, he is, as a recently relegated team might have inspired some top notch application, but a mid-table championship team next season certainly wont do - and thst may be the least of our problems.
For the "Kean wasn't fired" argument - Shebby isnt Venky's, trust me, I'd say old Shebsters as ruthless as they come and I doubt for a second will allow a little thing like loyalty get in the way of his ambitions.

The DEBT is there in the accounts for all to see.
Venkys themselves state that our income stream CANNOT fund our outgoings in the medium term - that is VENKYS which state that in the accounts NOT the podcast team.
Venkys THEMSELVES state in the accounts that (as at 1st July 2012) player wages to turnover is 92.2% - thats not the podcast team, thats IN the accounts in black and white !!
No business can lose money at the rate that BRFC is currently doing - our outgoings this season must be roughly 70-100% more than our outgoings - how is that SUSTAINABLE ???
This isnt me being "negative" - this is what our recently published accounts TELL US - go and have a good luck at them and listen to the podcast (#50) which will help you understand what is written in them - they are turely frightening for any Rovers fan.
Unless the club cut their spending MASSIVELY and soon, or Rovers get promoted or a buyer with £100m+ comes out of no-where or Venkys truely write a cheque for £50m then in the next 12-24 months the financial wheels are going to come off the club and many of you are going to say you are surprised to find the club is £100m in debt with NO CHANCE of ever paying it off !

I'm afraid we are Mr Berg. Cardiff walked all over us for large chunks of the game and if you're looking for promotion then other teams shouldn't be making us look like the bottom half side we are. Even the bastards walked all over us in the first half.
I accept that Berg can't turn things around in a matter of a couple of months without the chance to invest and make the team his own but we should at least be seeing improvements.
It will be nice to see backroom staff changes and some good signings in January, all we can hope for is to hang around the top half until then. There have been some par performances but nothing like what we need for promotion. Keep dreaming Berg, promotion, my arse.

No it is NOT me that says when the brothers attend they spend more on the trip (billed to the club) than we take in gate receipts for that game - it is shown in the ACCOUNTS.
This is just 1 example of the madness of situations shown in the accounts - listen to the podcast (#50) buy the accounts - if you can read a balance sheet then take a close look for yourself.

The accounts STATE certain things in BLACK and WHITE -
they state -
player wages to turnover is 92.2%.
Debt is £20m (approx).
Rovers cannot fund themselves in the medium term in the current format.
Those 3 things I have just written are also written in the Venkys (London) Ltd accounts - they are nothing to do with ANY "doom monger" or any journalist" - THEY ARE WRITTEN IN THE ACCOUNTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What don't you understand about that statement - if you don't beleive me then go and read them for yourself

Clearly this is more than "getting a few more fans down Ewood" - this is serious telephone size numbers.
I can't believe blueblooded or anyone else just thinks this is "doomsayers negativity" or "anti-Venky rhetoric" - anyone who can read a balance sheet - look at it - it is clearly shown - does anyone here think we are doing okay, financially ??
If you can't (or can't be bothered) to read the accounts then just think logically -
In the year upto 30-06-12 we lost (apart from player sales) £18m.
Since then we have had reduced revenue streams in EVERY revenue area (TV money, prize money, ticket sales, corporate sales, comercial sales) yet we have now massively increased our wages bill this summer - DM, JR, NG all rumoured to be on around £40,000 per week (£6m a year) with DE on around £20,000 per week.
Common sense should tell anyone who stops to think about it for 1 min that this is COMPLETE AND UTTER MADNESS and is COMPLETELY UNSUSTAINABLE.
What should also be of concern is that our owners (so far) seem to be taking NO ACTIONS to reduce these losses - infact the opposite is happening - they are giving massive contracts to old players on long(ish) contracts - MADNESS and is the road to ruin.

Keeper – Forget early season instruction to play out from the back. Revert to punt down field, preferably to left wing, even if nobody out wide.
Right back – don’t expect any support when overlapping, you’re on your own.
Centre backs – pass to and fro a few times then whack up field. Take up any position you like and give plenty of room to opposing players.
Left Back – Keep well away from centre back, opposition are used to exploiting this space
Centre Midfield - stay near to centre circle, keep well away from either penalty area. Move slowly. Always pass sideways or backwards and with slow pace on the pass. Do not apply pressure on ball until opposition advance to 25 yards from goal.
Wide midfield – never advance in front of lone striker. Do not apply pressure on opposition in their own half. Shoot on goal only as a last resort .
Striker – you’re on your own. Run around to keep warm. Meet up with your team mates at the final whistle.
Subs: Come on pitch at half time for a lark around.

The writing was on the wall way before the accounts were published. My point simply is we, the fans need to get behind the team not call for further boycotts unlike some deluded fans with wishful dreams of owning a piece of the club or any other personal objections like foreign ownership.
The point you made that was stated in the podcast about the cost of Venky's trips to Ewood may allude that we are only lining Venky's pockets by attending as smelly and his bunch of tinfoil misfits have been whining about, whereas, it should be clear to all that the team if not the club needs us more now than ever before - we are the 12th man and you and I both know the difference we can make.
If our club is to implode, not attending the matches is certainly not going to save it. It may not be easy watching what is happening to the club, it at times feels like helplessly watching a loved one wasting away from a terminal illness. But just as you would never think to turn your back on them when they need you the most, how can we turn our back on what for most us has been as big a part of our lives, on the pretext that being supportive to them is too painful to watch?
We say we are "Rovers Till I Die". Those are not mere words to us. I have yet to hear a coherent argument as to what can be achieved by staying away. I have stated mine many times for attending.

J.C - Rishton says...
I also agree that fans need to support the club as much as possible and I also agree with you as to how hard it is to watch the team at times now but that boycotting is not the answer.
Difficult times at the moment and possibly over the next year or 2 but sometimes in football things can change for the better quite quickly (a couple decent signings in Jan could transform this from an ave team to a reasonably good one).
We live in hope !!

I genuinely think Venkys care nothing for BRFC and will walk away at some point in the not too distant future.
We have a massively unsustainable wage bill. The summer signings of Murphy, Gomes etc and the entire no-marks of Portuguese football are now contracted to BRFC and are unlikely to want to leave any time soon. Their signings were not sound football decisions which suggests the hands of agents still influence the running of the club as recently as this summer.
I doubt funds will be made available in January unless we can shift some of the no-marks we've just signed!!!! In fact I would say this is one of the poorest set of players in the history of the club. With the exception of Rhodes, is there another who would guarantee a start in any of the top 6 in the Championship? And as for the Prem, forget it.
Henning has mission impossible. Promotion with this current crop is not going to happen. Remember, this is Kean's squad.

Surely the reputed 8,000 pounds a week we are paying Colin Hendry to sit around all day and read "the Sporting Life " could be better used , that is our biggest waste of money , his only contribution so far has been to tell SKY Sports that the majority of Rovers supporters are fully behind his mate Steven Kean , at the games he looks like a rabbit caught in he headlights with a Robin Reliant heading his way, he just stares into space.

I do feel we urgently require two experienced CBs as Hanley was thrown in the deep end and cannot cope when someone runs at him Dann is just not a good player so much for the pundits and scouts who said Liverpool were after him just prior to his move here.
Midfield is another problem as we require a tackler to win the ball someone with a bit of pace and a fast right winger to create openings for Rhodes and Best when he returns.Iwould also attempt to sign a left back and move Olsson forward into his brother's position as he blows hot and cold.Berg should know some decent Scandanavian players whilst he was a tv pundit over there and they always fit into our teams very well without the problems we get with South Americans. .

I have lost all interest in it to be honest, but it still hurts. What has happened to Vuckevic? He looked a decent wide player. CKR up front with Rhodes, King and Vuckevic wide at least gives you a bit of skill and pace.
Don't blame Berg, he has inherited a sh1t squad thanks to Kean and JA. I have had a few people mention we should have kept Kean. I would rather be in the conference than have that idiot still here. It may take time and a whole lot of player movement in and out, but surely Berg has enough nous to sort out the sorry mess.

BERG got the job as manager at Rovers knowing the squad we had and his comments were at the time " I know what the owners want and I can deliver right away'' meaning Berg was stating we are going straight back up.
Now berg has decided he needs a whole new squad of players to bring us back up , NO/NO/NO/NO no more money for Berg , if we give him more of our limited funds we will never recover.
Allow Berg to carry on till the end of the season if he cannot do as he promised when he got appointed (an instant return) then we will part company ,and then hopefully we will get what we wanted in the first place, AN EXPERIENCE MANAGER IN .
