Rovers boss Berg disappointed by late leveller in East Lancashire derby
10:40am Monday 3rd December 2012 in Football
Henning Berg at Turf Moor
HENNING Berg expressed his frustration that Blackburn Rovers were unable to secure all three points in yesterday’s East Lancashire derby at Turf Moor after admitting that they were ‘so close’ to victory.
Rovers had led 1-0 against fierce rivals Burnley, with Jordan Rhodes’ 68th-minute header putting them ahead despite a performance that was below par for long periods – particularly before half time.
But Sam Vokes came off the bench to nod in a free kick in the 89th minute and secure a 1-1 draw for the home side.
The result maintained Rovers’ 33-year unbeaten record against Burnley but Berg was disappointed that his side could not see out the game.
“Looking at the chances and the play, we can’t have too many complaints about the result,” said the Rovers boss, who was taking part in his first derby match as the club’s manager.
“But when you are 1-0 up and it’s the 89th minute, it doesn’t matter what the game has been like before that and who has had the most chances, we still have a very good chance of winning the game.
“Maybe if you looked before the game you would say a draw would have been okay but when you’re that close to winning, and the way we played in the second half, I thought we did much much better.
“Looking at the first half performance you would say Burnley were the better team with more chances and more play.
“But we were very close to getting a great result. It would have been a fantastic result and we were that close.”
Paul Robinson made some important saves to keep the score at 0-0 in the first half and Berg admitted that Rovers did not cope perfectly with the derby experience before the interval, having also made three changes for the match.
“Maybe we got caught a little bit in terms of not settling down and playing football as we would have liked to,” he said.
“We changed it a little bit in terms of how we wanted to play as well, so maybe that’s why the game ended up being liked that in the first half because we played a little bit differently.
“We were just being a bit more direct. In a game like that it’s okay to do that but we got caught doing it a little bit too much, we didn’t find the right balance.
“That is something we’ll work on. I thought in the second half we were much better at it.
“I thought Burnley were the better team in the first half and I thought we shaded it in the second half.
“We defended better, higher up the pitch in the second half and used the ball better, and we scored a great goal.
“We’d been defending those free kicks and corners all day long fantastically well.
“I have to give credit to the back four, the goalkeeper and the two central midfielders.
“We were put under pressure a little bit too many times in the first half, they saved us and made sure we were still in the game.
“We were giving away a little bit too many free kicks in dangerous areas and towards the end it was one too many.
“We would like to improve in terms of how we defend and get free kicks against us.
“If we take a little bit more care of the ball, a little more mental strength then I think we would have won the game.
“But 1-1 is not the worst result.”

In normal circumstances that would be fine - but the pressure is on Berg to get us promoted at the first time of asking. Personally I don't think that is possible this season with this squad and I think most Rovers fans can see that and accept that.(but only just).
The task is not just to get a good enough squad/team to win promotion it is also to make the team/squad/club sound enough to stay in the prem once we get there. No easy task for any manager.
We have to be prepared to give the club and HB enough time to do this. If it takes another season then so be it.
Better to build a strong club that survives than becoming a one-hit wonder and struggling and getting relegated again.

Obviously this view has not changed since and next season will be the big test for our manager. We need youth and pace/bite in midfield, a natural right winger and a centre back (if Givet is not to be selected).
I always considered Givet our best centre back when we were in the premier but we have to trust that the manaager has his good reasons on this?
Lets hope HB has what it takes and is given some time, things were a total mess before lets not forget and we do now seem to have some normality around the club.

Can't believe what dead weight Murphy has been (and Etuhu). It's a bit tragic as they seemed like positive investments. Obviously they both lack the attachment to Rovers that they had to Fulham, and it was probably passion for the club that kept Murphy performing beyond how a man of his age would be expected to.
Got to give Berg time. More upheaval/disruption would be awful right now. He apparently loves pace -we've been crying out for pace for years. Hopefully he'll get in a decent CM.
Shame this Rosado chap is obviously no good...

Henning, you were here when we won the league. Surely you must remember. The team was built around Shearer and whoever played up front with him.
A strong midfield, 2 wingers and a solid defence.
Rhodes can be the new Shearer.
Please find someone to play up front with him and then feed them.

Berg as to be given time in building a team in his own vision because this lot for all reasons outlined are simply not up to the task. The team for me is wholly fragmented and the cohesion is far from perfect.
Yesterday's game for me personally was a bit of a damp squid and I believe both sets of supporters on the whole were pretty subdued for that which I believe is the transition taking place at both clubs ? Neither side didn't want to lose that was plainly obvious, but how they went about it left much to be desired ?
Berg(with the help of Venky etc) needs to clear out the deadwood. Gaining promotion at this juncture would do nothing, in my opinion, only result in the possible relegation, as you point out.
This all sorry mess that as besieged BRFC these last 2 years or so is purely down to the big wigs which in turn leaves us, the supporter, shouldering the whole sorry mess attempting in putting gloss on what at times is, I'm sorry to say, like polishing a turd !
But I'm with you on building a strong club that survives than the one hit wonder you allude to.
Berg must be given time to build a solid platform and the likes of Josh King, and dare I say, CKR. Those two 2nd half along with Formica very nearly stole the show with the class, quality striker that goes by the names of Rhodes.
Still, we march on into the 34th year bragging rights firmly entrenched - just !! He He :)

7 games proved this in the same club.
7 Games - SK - 14 points - 4 win
6 Games - EB - 8 points - 2 win
7 Games - HB - 7 points. - 1win
HB win with a poor team in this championship, I am not considering that is a win. But Steve really work hard to keep us in the top of the league.
Improvement action plan nothing with Berg. He is going to just another game. same saga goes on and we will get only disappointed news after every game. Grip 15 players to win or leave the club.

We still have the majority of those players plus a couple of decent additions plus one class signing...plus a new manager.
It wont happen overnight, you don't go from very bad to very good - this season just to get to good would be an achievement. Right now I think we are somewhere between bad and average.
We have to keep perspective...the other two clubs that came down with us both beat us already this season - but both of them are still below us!
Some of the other teams above us in this league have good squads that they have put together over a couple of seasons like Cardiff, Boro, Brighton and Leicester but we (despite all our many failings) are already almost on a par or better than some of these teams. We already beat Leicester, Watford and Hull for instance - yet lost to Millwall, Palace and Boro.
These results show that the championship is a very open league and anyone putting a decent run together will be at or near to the top,
Yet even though promotion may be a step too far this season...if we can just keep in contention/touch and put a run together at the right time then who knows what is possible....the play-offs maybe?

If a club is set-up right and the squad is half decent then these clubs can make a bid for success despite managerial changes. Hull have had four managers since 2010, as have Leicester - and Palace have had three, so all are comparable to the Rovers.
So with a decent manager (that could be Berg) that can set the team up right and with a couple of additions in the Jan window plus a little bit of time - then there is every reason to believe we can challenge for promotion at least as strongly as any of these other teams.

Its like playing with ten men. You need a midfield general to drive play into the opponents half. To close down and lead all around by example. Not stand there and watch the game pass you by as you point at the ball for someone else to chase. Who made this guy captain, you couldn't have picked a worse player.

My fear now is that when Rovers are 1 0 up there is a mental thing that they are half expecting to loose the lead.
Steve Warnock switched from fullback to midfield - why not try Givet as the defending midfielder and Vuckevic as the man to unlock defences - what we have seen of him he looks as capable as D M - pace on either wing and Kazim & Jordan up front would pose a real threat to get that second goal which could settle the team down.
We are not good enough for the Premiership but we are not too far away from the top if we can put together s decent run - the away form is good only one defeat on the road and points tslly could have been so much more. We need to dominate at home starting with Cardiff

I have never said that I like Kean and yes, of course I enjoyed being 10th in the Premiership more than top of the Championship. I actually enjoyed being TOP of the Premiership but sadly we can not bring back Jack Walker or Ray Harford. If anything ws despicable around here it was the Walker Trust decision to sell the club to an organisation with neither the resources or capability to run a Premiership club. I stand by my assertion that we should have kept Kean until we had an experienced and credible replacement secured and the last seven games, and Berg's post match comments, have done nothing to change my mind.

I doubt very much that that which as spilled over will be forgotten in many a mind thus his only contrition could lay in his ability assisting in steering this club back onto calmer waters, but that said, I am of the mind that his job can only have been made even more difficult with the disclosures ?
For me I cringe each time I see him walking out in our clubs colors knowing what I know in contrast to that which I viewed him all those years ago.

After all the Venkys know the huge rewards that are available for promotion (80 million per season) so I reckon they will be here for a quite a while yet, even if profit is indeed their motive....
Plus one other factor.....it took us almost three years to sell the club (in quite decent fettle) to the Venkys, so how long do you think ti would take the Venkys to find someone to take the club on now?

What do you think our best formation would be? what areas do we need to change. Have we got enough quality and do we need more grafters to see us improve.
And to all the doom mongers and anti bergers.
naff off.

I'm just a realist. Sorry if I don't share your (strange) view where we are apparently the Barcelona of the championship. The truth is we are not one of the strongest sides in this league. I'd say we are in the top 10, but that certainly doesn't mean we should be 'hammering' mid-table sides every week. If that's your view, then you will be very disappointed this season.

In my dreams I still cant.... cant get away from thinking BRFC....are a premiership club...!!!
But everyday, reality seems to sink in..
Were supposed to have the possibly worst squad in the the football league, the worst owners, the worst fans who are mostly negative and unsupportive of the team and not forgetting the worst managers of late.
I'd like to agree with many like meself who believe that BRFC should be head and shoulders above the rest and be back in the Premiership sooner rather then later.
But reality is its a tough season ahead of us.
We simply dont have a midfield.
Our midfield is tooo nice and soft.
We have no winners.
We have elderly over the hill past it players.
We simply cannot win an
We dont have any enforcers to achieve our goal, we dont have any midfield general to dictate play,
Robbo has to hoof the ball to the strikers and hope for the best.
The defenders get no cover from midfield.
Cant we see the problem is our midfield.
I would reccomend we need some hard tackling midfield generals and I know we need to find them.
I can think of Jermain Jones and Joey Barton to give us the bite and ferocity required.
what do you think..?
who have you seen out there that can make a difference to our season.
For sure we will need some good players, preferably young and capable.
We simply cannot play & win with these elderly players.
