HENNING Berg has called for his Blackburn Rovers side to start building some momentum – after admitting “a little extra quality” is needed to turn draws into wins.

The Rovers boss was delighted with the reaction he received from the Ewood Park faithful for his first game in charge but was left frustrated by Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham.

Ruben Rochina’s 12th minute penalty was cancelled out by Marlon King just five minutes later and, despite the best home display of the season, Rovers were unable to bring Berg his first victory as manager as they dropped out of the play-off places.

He said: “If we had shown that little extra quality we could be easily sitting here with six points from the last two games and not two.

“We just have to make sure we pick up those four points we’ve missed out on during the rest of the season.

“The way this league is shaping up now, there are not many teams who are going to run away with it.

“Palace are looking very good at the moment, which we experienced ourselves, but apart from that if we can get a good run together, which we should because there is room for improvement, then of course we will take big steps in the table.

“I think there’s still improvement to come from this team.

“The Huddersfield game and this one, we could easily have had six points from them and then we’d have been in a great position in the league.

“The way they’re playing is quite good – at times very good – but we need to make sure those periods when they’re playing well are longer in games because what we showed at our best today was very, very good.

“We need that extra little bit of quality in the final third to make sure we’re winning these games, not drawing them – the timings of the runs, the quality in the cross and final pass, and in the finishing, and if we get that right we’ll score many more goals.”

A disappointing crowd of a little more than 14,000 turned out to welcome Berg back to Ewood Park, but, while small in number, it was a united home faithful.

“Well I haven’t thought too much about it,” Berg said. “I was really happy about the reaction – I got a fantastic reception today and it’s good to be back.

“When the game starts you’re concentrating on that but you could see how the fans got behind the team and supported them and that’s great to hear. It’s important for the players to feel that. It drives them on.

“It’s just a little bit of a shame that we couldn’t get the win for the crowd – for ourselves of course too – but for the fans because if we’d done that this really would have been a perfect day for us.

“I’ve been here as a player too during some really good times and I know what this place can be like – the volume from the fans, how they can push the team forward, how they can help them in situations and if we can get them back, fantastic.

“I think Saturday was a big step in that direction. Hearing them shouting for the team and really get behind us is fantastic for the players to know.”
