THE midweek Veteran's 25 mile time trial at Cocker-ham proved a bonanza for our local riders, who came away with more than their share of the prize money on a cold and windy country lane course.

The Blackburn-based North Lancashire Road Club were winners of the three-man team prize thanks to the rides of Dave Brown, Harry Haseley and Dave Hargreaves. The 1hour 3minutes 54second ride of Brown was 17m 59s better than the time set for his age of 69, ex-marathon runner Haseley's 1:07.11 at age 66 a plus' of 12m 54s and Hargreaves 1h 04m 44s at age 61 giving him plus of 12m 27s. Brown also won the 60-69 category and Peter Greenwood of Burnley and the Clayton Velo the 50-59 year category based on his excellent 58 minute 50 second time. Egerton's Frank Kerry was second best overall on age standard with his 1h 04m 48s giving him a plus' of 18m 56s at age 72.

Duncan Park-also NLRC- took 3rd in the Bolton Clarion 10' whilst Peter Briscoe won Vet50 and Stan Riley Vet60 in the Ribble Valley CRC 25 at the weekend.

The midweek Pendle Forest 10 mile event was won by their new recruit Brian Hickey in 25m 25s followed by Steve Singleton (PF) in 27m 3s and John Driver of Nelson Wheelers in 28m 18s.

With this being the Ardennes Week in the cycling hotbed country of Belgium it is worth noting that in the two Classic races being televised this week, the Fleche Wallone and the Liege-Bastogne -Liege, our local man Alan Rams-bottom, who still lives in the area, was 11th and 8th respectively, exactly 45 years ago- a feat highly unlikely to be matched in this year's events by any of our British riders.

Good to see that here at least a sport that doesn't involve pointlessly kicking a ball around gets a mention!
