Colne town centre race promises to deliver a treat

The Colne town centre cycle races have long offered some exciting competition and next Wednesday’s promotion will not disappoint.

Held on a short circuit based on Market Street in the middle of the East Lancashire town, the programme starts at 7pm with events for all categories of rider and then at 8pm the British Cycling Elite Men’s Circuit Race will be held covering the circuit for one hour of high speed action.

Most of Britain’s top road racers are entered including recent National Road Race Championship winner Kristian House and Barnoldswick’s Halford Bikehut pro Ian Wilkinson.

Brockhall Village-based Science-in-Sport have a team entered including one of their directors, Tim Lawson.

All three of the mid-week time trials held on East Lancs roads were over the 10-mile distance with Dave Metcalfe’s time of 23 minutes 2 seconds, riding for Team Swift, the fastest of them in the Pendle Forest promotion.

Second to Metcalfe came 15-year-old Nathan Smedley in 23-44, leading a trio of Nelson Wheelers with Steve Wilkinson 24-00 in third and Chris Smedley fourth with 24-42.

At Hapton Paul Warrener of the Rossendale Road Club was fastest with 24-05 on a tough night beating Roy Flanagan (25-34), with Adrian Watts and newcomer Christian Loney tying for third with 27-17.

The Edisford near Clitheroe 10 mile was won by Duncan Park of the organising North Lancs Road Club in 23-30 beating Fraser Snape (23-54), David Tomlinson (24-54) and Bob Matthews (24-55).

Best of our local riders in the final counting event for the 2009 Sporting Courses Series was Ian Stott of Blackburn and District CTC, who covered the hilly 22-mile course near Penrith in 54 minutes 30 seconds for fifth place.

Peter Greenwood of Clayton Velo clocked 55-02 for sixth and Paul Warrener of Rossendale 9th in 55-35. Cumbrian’s Adam Powe (53-06) won the event.

The North Lancashire Road Club have 16 of their members, or a quarter of the total entry, for the veterans’ 25-mile time trial at Cockerham on Sunday morning.

There, Duncan Park, Neil Cooper and Ian Cox should be in the fastest placings along with Paul Warrener (Rossendale Road Club) and Peter Greenwood (Clayton Velo).

On ‘Standard’, or when age is taken into consideration, the North Lancs team have twice won at Cockerham already this season and have a good chance of making it a hat-trick this weekend.
