Our East Lancs. veterans virtually swept the board in the annual North Lancashire Veterans Time Trial Association 10 mile on the Garstang A6 course.
The North Lancashire Road Club team of Harry Haseley (actual time 26 minutes 14 seconds giving a ‘plus’ on age of 5m 16s), Dave Hargreaves (25-11/+5-05) and Stan Riley (25-13/+4-49) easily took the team award.
Bob Matthews (24-18) was fastest vet50+, Denise Young (29-03/minus1-30) won the ladies prize and Paul Warrener was second with 22-40.
Just for good measure Gill Craske and James Prossor of Church teamed up to win the tandem with 25-06.
Overall best ride on the night based on age came from the virtually unbeatable Frank Kerry of Egerton who clocked 24-42 to give him a massive 8-20 plus at the age of 73.
The first weekly Rossendale Road Club 10 mile time trial of the 2009 season was held on a cold and very windy evening, resulting in times several minutes slower than expected.
The winner was their own member Paul Warrener of Waterfoot who’s time of 27 minutes 14 seconds was his slowest in a long time at that distance.
Second came Adrian Watts (29-50), third Roy Flanagan (32-00) and fourth Scott Henderson.
It was a family affair in the Pendle Forest 10 mile with fastest rider Chris Smedley of Nelson Wheelers clocking 24 minutes 09 seconds, just beating 14-year-old son Nathan by 15 seconds.
Brian Hickey took third in 24-39 and Chris Sherriffs fourth in 24-44.
Barnoldswick’s Ian Wilkinson was again performing at the highest level on this side of the Channel by taking another impressive second placing in the Classic Lincoln Grand Prix.
The Halford-Bikehut professional again beat all of the 200 starters except for winner Russell Downing giving a carbon copy of the result in the previous Premier Calendar event.
Once again, Mark Cavendish of the Isle of Man has done our country proud by wearing the coveted Pink Jersey of overall leader in the ongoing Tour of Italy.
It is the first time that an Englishman has achieved that feat in the 100 year history of this major event.
