Wilkinson lands big Midlands success

BARNOLDSWICK'S Ian Wilkinson scored the biggest success of his career at the weekend in winning the East Midlands International CiCLE Classic Road Race against the best UK based racing cyclists and many continentals.

Although now a full time bike rider, and a member of the Halfords-Bikehut squad, 30-year-old Wilkinson still runs his building business in the East Lancashire town.

Almost 200 riders started the event based on Rutland Water and, after 96 miles of a mixture of tarmac and cross country tracks, Wilkinson passed the chequered flag just a bike length ahead of the best of the rest.

Nearer to home in the Wigan Wheelers weekend, on courses near Garstang, several of our local riders were in the placings in both the 10-mile on Saturday and the 30 on Sunday.

Peter Greenwood of Clayton Velo was third in the ‘30’ with 1-09-25, Paul Warrener of Rossendale seventh (1-10-40) and three North Lancs Road Club riders in the top dozen, with Rob Dickinson eighth (1-11-34), Duncan Park ninth (1-11-40) and Fraser Snape 11th (1-12-12).

In the ‘10’, Warrener was seventh in 21-54 and Dickinson 12th in 22-21.

In the juvenile event, 14-year-old Nathan Smedley of Colne rode an excellent 23-30 for fourth and Blackburn’s 16-year-old Hope Kerry was best girl in 32-29.

The midweek Pendle Forest 10-mile time trial was won by Chris Smedley, father of Nathan (mentioned above), of the Nelson Wheelers club, in 23 minutes 53 seconds.

Brian Hickey of the Pendle Forest was second in 24-20, Kevin Hickie of Bronte Wheelers third in 25-13 and Craig Holden of Pendle Forest fourth in 25-39.

The Rossendale Road Club begin their series of mid-week evening 10-mile time trials on the Hapton based course starting next Tuesday, May 5.

All are welcome with an entry fee of £1.50 with the signing-on is just off the A679 close to junction 9 off the M65.
