The North Lancashire Road Club scored a well- deserved team win in the veterans mid-week 25 mile time trial on a blustery afternoon on the exposed Pilling Sands based course. Ex-runner and now fully converted cyclist Harry Haseley of Great Harwood clocked 1 hour 9 minutes 1 second to give him a ‘plus’ – or beating of his standard time – for his 67 years of 11 minutes 40 seconds, with Dave Clough of Clayton-le-Moors 1-02-39 (plus of 9-32) at age 52 and newcomer Jim Connell of Whalley 1-08-56 (plus of 5-59) at age 57, for an aggregate ‘plus’ of 27 min 11 secs.
Best on age standard on the day was from evergreen Frank Kerry of Egerton, with his actual time of 1-05-22, giving him a winning 19 minutes ‘plus’ for the 73 year old whilst Blackburn’s Sue Cheetham won the Ladies award with 1-12-45.
Rossendale’s Paul Warrener is obviously benefiting from his recent training in Majorca with some top rate performances, which included an excellent 22 minute 46 second ride in the Pendle Forest 10 mile at Thornton-in-Crave,n which put over two minutes into the rest of the field, with second man Chris Smedley of Nelson Wheelers clocking 25-14, Brian Hickey Pendle Forest 25-24 and Kevin Hickie Bronte Wheelers 25-54.
Pendle Forest’s Jason Bateman is partaking in a charity ride from John O’Groats to Lands End in May with all proceeds going to Children’s Hospices UK with his employers, Barclays, matching all other donations. Full details and the opportunity to sponsor is on www.lifecycle-uk.net.
