BURNLEY'S Jimmy Wright was a convincing winner of the Pendle Forest promotion of the Circuit of Ingleborough time trial at the weekend clocking an impressive time of 1 hour 5 minutes 17 seconds for the 27 mile hilly course in very windy conditions.
Wright, who rides in the colours of the Preston Wheelers Cycling Club, was only four minutes outside of the course record held since 1998 by his club-mate Gethin Butler in better conditions than those that the 85 entries of this year’s version were presented with.
Surprise entry Paul Oldham of Colne rode an excellent race in an unaccustomed time trial, finishing in sixth place with 1 hour 9 minutes 56 seconds whilst Burnley’s on-form Peter Greenwood took ninth slot with 1-10-47 to easily take the Veteran 50+ award. Other ‘locals’ in the top 20 were Dave Ebbrell, although having moved from Blackburn still travels daily to the town centre brewery, 1-11-11 (11th), Paul Warrener 1-13-56 (17th), Carl Pawson 1-14-17 (19th) and Fraser Snape 1-14-21 (20th).
* The 2009 Sporting Courses competition, of which the Pendle Forest event was one of the counters, continues on local roads on Sunday when the Ribble Valley Cycle Racing Club hold their 19 mile event over a course from Longridge that takes in Hurst Green, Edisford and Chaigley finishing outside the cricket ground at Longridge.
Just short of 60 riders will be tackling this one with the first rider starting at 10am.
