Despite missing out on victory it was a strong display from Raleigh, who had four riders in the top 10.

The action now turns back to the Tour Series with last night’s round in Motherwell, which was also set to include Colne’s Sam Boast, riding for the Wheelbase squad, followed by round five of the series in Durham tomorrow and the sixth round in Barrow on Friday.

Neither Wilkinson, or his Team Raleigh team-mate Brad Morgan, from Chorley, were in action in the last two rounds of the series in Redditch and Aberystwyth.

Steven Burke (Team Wiggins), from Colne, did feature in the Redditch round as he crossed the line in 45th place. The Olympic champion did not start the Aberystwyth round, which featured a hill climb.

The Redditch round also featured the opening round of the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix series on the same circuit which featured some of the country’s leading riders.

Laura Trott (Matrix Fitness) took the victory ahead of fellow Team GB star Dani King with Nikki Juniper third.

East Lancashire pair Rebecca Rimmington and Amy Gornall were also both in the field for the race.

Padiham’s Rimmington came home in 24th place riding for IKON-Mazda, while Gornall (Aprire HSS Hire) followed in 26th spot.

Round two of the series was due to take place in Motherwell last night prior to the men’s event.
