JUST 10 seconds separated the fastest three in the Wigan Wheelers 10 mile event at Garstang with Burnley’s Steve Irwin clinching his first win on Lancashire roads since returning to our area after 20 years away, writes DAVID BROWN.

Riding for the North Lancashire Road Club Irwin clocked a superb 20 minutes 30 seconds time which was just eight seconds too good for Pendle Forest’s in-form Richard Bideau with recent Circuit of the Dales winner Mark Holton of drag2zero.com third in 20mis 40secs.

Rossendale’s Nick Cooper was winner of the junior event with an excellent 22mins 14secs.

The North Lancashire Road Club promote their annual 10-mile time trials on Saturday at 6pm on the Garstang course.

Event organiser Terry Parker has a good quality field of 70 riders including Irwin and Bideau - but they will have to contend with James Gullen of the Velosure Starley Primal squad.

Burnley’s Peter Greenwood was again the winner of the age related category in the third round of the RTTC Classic Series in Worcestershire with the fourth round at Keswick this Sunday.

The Steven Burke Hub Circuit Series has started on Thursday nights on the brand new circuit at Barrowford for riders in all categories. For more information visit www.cdpp.co.uk The three local evening time trials will be in full swing by next week with the Rossendale Road Club 10 mile events on Tuesdays at 7pm on the Hapton course starting on May 5, with signing on and parking at the Hapton Inn in the village.

From Wednesday, May 6, the North Lancashire Road Club hold 10-mile events on the Edisford circuit with signing on at Edisford Baths car park by 6.45pm.

The Pendle Forest Cycling Club have already started their Thursday evening events and they are held every other week with the next tomorrow from Thornton-in-Craven.

All three clubs have deviations during the year so a check of their websites is recommended.
