HODDLESEN’S Paul Taylor was the winner of the summer-long series of 10 mile time trials held on Wednesday evenings near Clitheroe and promoted by the North Lancashire Road Club (NLRC).

The series is based on the highest score of an NLRC member for a maximum of 10 completed events.

Twenty points are awarded to the fastest road club rider in each event down to one point for 20th.

Taylor scored 194 points and will be awarded the trophy at the club’s dinner in November.

In second spot with 158 points – but from only eight rides – was West Bradford’s Duncan Park who had an almost perfect score having won all but two of his rides.

John Foster of Mellor finished third with 143 points having competed in 10 events although scoring less than the two above him in individual rides.

Fourth was Shaun McHugh (129 points), fifth Phil Chadwick (124) and sixth Austin Foy (115).

The best female rider was Alice Capstick in 19th place with 53 points. In total a record 48 NLRC members competed in at least one event this year.

Meanwhile, what a superb Tour of Britain the 2013 version was.

The Tour has always drawn a lot of interest and in 1952, as a 14-year-old, I was advised to go by bus to Preston to watch the Aberystwyth to Blackpool stage of the Daily Express sponsored version as large crowds were expected and I just may lose my precious Dawes three speed if I got detached from it!

This weekend is the Three Peaks Cyclo Cross which is being held on Sunday with a start at 9.30am from Helwith Bridge two miles south of Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

A massive entry of 671 competitors will tackle Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent and back to the start point.

Last year’s winner Rob Jebb, who rides for Barnoldwick based Hope Factory Racing, will again be favourite to retain his title.
